In 1959 Bill Nicholsons lost out on his first choice target, Mel "signing for Ars*n*l was the most terrible choice I ever made" Charles...............so we signed Dave Mackay instead

Although Willian didn't exactly tear it up last night I can't help but think this thread is a little OTT. We've all mentioned that Chadli shouldn't be judged too harshly, too early and Soldado is hardly shitting goalkeepers up with his van Persie-esq ability.

I wouldn't say it was a bullet dodged, but if not getting him was the catalyst for going all out for Eriksen then it was definitely a stroke of luck and certainly a scenario I think levy would've been more than happy with. And this is from me, who questioned Willian's quality when we were linked with him.

Remember that every player that doesn't sign for us or is sold from us is shit according to some on here. We also laugh at RAWK for having these opinions.

Joe Cole.

Harry desperately wanted him and we were willing to pay him big wages, but (thank god) he chose Liverpool over us. I remember being disappointed at the time, but then he was sent off on his debut, promptly got injured, and we proceeded to sign VDV on deadline day. The rest is history.

How the fuck do people come to the conclusion Gomes was a waste of money? and Pavlyuchenko... was no Berbatov but scored his worth and did what he was paid to do.

Curtis Davies my choice.

David Beckham when HR wanted him. Also Nuri Sahin.

Beckham would have got the club a lot of money and Sahin is one of the best midfielders in the world but was played out of position by Liverpool..

Ashley Young

@Omar

So you want an overpriced, injury prone, average at best left winger (which would probably have stopped Bale moving into that position) who also happens to be one of the biggest cheats in the country?

My mistake..

To be fair -

The time I remember him being linked with us was while at Watford and West Ham, Villa and ourselves were bidding.

He ended up going to Villa, performing well and doubling there investment when he moved to Utd

He might never have lived up to the hype of his early promise but he's been a good PL performer and I don't think he could be considered a bullet dodged in the way say Arshavin was (a player most Spurs fans were creaming their pants over and gutted when he signed for the goons on an almost Ozil level only for him to be pretty shite when he got there and be sold for a loss)

Players like Rebrov show that scouts and people 'in the game' can get it very wrong. In hindsight it is plain for everyone to see that his strength was the partnership with Shevchenko. Shevchenko was the star, Rebrov the foil. Spending so much money on him grabbed headlines, as Kiev were getting a lot of praise in the CL, but it was dumb for so many reasons. You shouldn't expect players to perform in the same way for a new club, it's not a video game.

As for bullets dodged: Heskey, Ricketts.. bloody hell. Who was buying our players back then!?!

I'm sure we were linked with him during his time at Villa? Anyway, I'm still not buying the whole Arshavin thing. For his first 2 seasons there he was very good, very very good in fact, I think that his awful form after that has clouded some peoples memories of how good he was. He was always a good player anyway, he just fell out of favour with Wenger, no reason to say he couldn't have been good somewhere else

i think that Willian was meant to be....now he can stew at what looks like an imploding Stamford Bridge

did missing out on Willian lead to signing Eriksen? if so, and if we wouldn't have got Eriksen if Willian had joined, then it would appear that Spurs have the better player. Yes, 1 game for Willian but 2 games (1 goal and key roles in 2 goals) for Eriksen at 1/3 the price. And he seems like a nice bloke who prioritises his football over his bank balance.
