I’ll be taking a closer look at Jaden Philogene if Eze is out of the picture. From what I have seen, they are similar with Philogene looking more like a winger of the two. In all honesty, I haven’t see a lot of him, but will now take more interest.

I’m not sure he’s a priority. We are terrible at getting deals like this done. We rarely buy players from within the Premier League and especially not from financially stable clubs or players with full contracts.
But when we do they are usually CAA Base clients, like Eze.

Albert Gudmundsson probably considered a better deal. Might be the better player as well.
Worth keeping in mind WLB said previously we really like Baena so good chance he be the alternative to Eze.

You are right that Albert would probably be significantly less than Eze tho especially if we include Spence.

Be interesting to see who the club decide to move for.

he’s a priority.. This is a player the clubs had interest for over 3 years now.
we’ve struggled with teams in certain defensive blocks going back to the Pochettino era, because we’ve lacked a player of his ability.

There are other players out there who won’t command the same fee who but have the skill set. Meaning we’ll have funds to use on other parts of the squad as well.

There is no way we are spending over £60 million on a player who would be a nice one to have rather than somebody who would come in and address one of the critical weaknesses the team currently has. Eze is good but there are other players out there who can do similar things to what he can but for a fraction of the cost.

I'd much rather we spent £60m+ on a top class defensive midfielder to be honest.

Depends I guess if we like onyedika and think he can step up immediately, like vdv or udogie did. Possible even fofana would wouldn’t cost more than£40m surely.
A top class cdm would be perfect but who fits that criteria?
Archie gray I guess but that would be a big step to spend that much on a young player

So would I but that player has to be obtainable.

Same goes for the winger position.

If those top class upgrades aren't obtainable at DM (Ederson, Onana, Zubimedni) or WF (Williams, Neto, Kvara) then we're looking at either better value (Fofana, Chiesa, Lauriente) or longer term upgrades (Archie Gray, Nusa etc).

Most of our squad depth positions (GK, LB, RB, LCB, 2nd WF, 2nd CF) are in part self financing. That is to say we need to sell players to free up squad space anyway, which will cover most of the cost.

So the question then is how do we best strengthen in order to really compete next August?

At which point Eze looks an attractive deal to immediately strengthen AM and LWF whilst a Nusa type finds his feet.

With hopefully Europe and 5 subs he'd make a measurable impact, and right now would be starting ahead of Madders.

I think we have to be open minded on the moving parts of all the other deals before we can say for sure.

I also think the mentality needs to be we're still replacing the impact of Kane, which is impossible in one player, so go as big as possible across the attack.

May not get him due to City, but we shouldn't shy away from it if it turns out to be the best option.

Min £60mil for him and Eze seems to be doing the rounds today.

Would any of you take Eze for £60mil?
I would if we were tweaking the system to a 3-2-4-1 similar to City, that would allow for 2 number 10s and not block the path for some of our promising youngsters. £60m for a Maddison rotation i cant see.
I guess it will also depend on whether we can include players in any deal and what funds we have available this summer. Personally a specialist DM and top centre forward are where i would prioritise money but Eze could be brilliant.

Villa apparently have a "buy back" clause inserted. I'd be gobsmacked if this wasn't exercised seeing as he'd represent next to nothing in cost (taking into consideration the fee Hull have already paid), HG and club trained.

Also, an u21 international and a player they wont want to see sign elsewhere in a year or two and make Villa look foolish for selling in the first instance.

He has to want to go there, is a London lad, and his brother plays for our U15s.

So not nailed on they get him back.

The buy back clause is reported to be £15m, nobody else apart from Villa get him for under 25m, imo.

That's another £10m hypothetically Villa could put towards his wages/signing on fee.

Now tell me where he's going..?

If they want to give him a £10m signing on fee, they're welcome to him.

I'd estimate his market value to at around £15m right now.

But either way Hull can only sell him to where the player wants to go to.

So are they going to turn down £15m+ add ons knowing he could go for less at any time?

Good prospect but there are similar young wingers for similar money.

Even those that either are or could become homegrown.

Bardghji, Whittaker, Gnonto, Rowe, Koleosho, Iling-Junior, Tyrique George.

The operative word from my post was towards.

Nobody is saying Villa are dropping a 10m signing-on fee for a Championship winger, but 10m difference between Villa and Spurs could be the difference between a London lad all of a sudden developing a Brummy accent.

And the operative phrase from mine being "not nailed on."

Maybe you're right, we'll see.

Anything above £15m and market rate signing on fee / wages is overpaying imo.

Would they be willing and able to do that with limited FFP wiggle room?

I expect CL may be the deciding factor for any transfer battles with Villa.

Eze is the competition Maddison needs. With both being relatively injury prone, we could confidentially rotate them without our level dropping and hopefully keep them fit.
