After reading the Sporting Lisbon forum and the thread on this guy they are disgusted with the price because of his potential but the general consensus is that he is not ready to step in to our first 11.

He may not be ready but we had some kids step up and do well last year and playing in front of Hugo and alongside a fit, happy Vertonghen or a fit, happy Kaboul and he may have a found a better situation to be 'ready' than he would ever have in Lisbon.

Could be, but it is new season and he is older ie. could develop into something this season?

And with that, my first experience of Eric Dier on a football pitch. Amazing, especially in these days of total connectivity, that we're gushing in excitement over players whom we've never even seen play.

For what it's worth, Dier appears to be rather huge yet capable of keeping composure under pressure. Reminds me of a stronger young Daws/Kaboul hybrid - Daws' body and pace but Kaboul's strength and ball skills/passing.

Anyone know why the price is so small?

Sounds like there was something in his contract that allowed us to activate a £4m release clause from what I can understand from a google translate of the Sporting press release.

Well, I assume at least one of Dawson, Chiriches or Kaboul will be off soon, if Dier is going to come into the first team, even as a back-up.

Could be that Broomfield has been looking at him not just Baldini.

Yeah think this kid has been trailed by Broomfield for a while for what I can gather.

Fruits of Baldini are more your Musa Yahaya type signings that go into the academy unannounced, I think there was a Belgian kid we snapped up this summer too, can't remember his name.

They're for a few years time. Dier is a first team squad signing (as in, he'll be at least 4th choice CB this season in and around the first team). Hence he got an official welcome/announcement.

This is what another Sporting fan said in response to me asking about Dier:

I've followed Dier's career since he was a kid. I've seen him play in the youth squads, I've seen every game in the B squad that he's played, and he's not overrated at all. He's our most promising defender and one of the most promising defenders in all of Europe. Being a former CB myself, I can tell you that he can secure everything that's needed for his position. Plus, he's got the ability to move up the field like no other CB (apart from, occasionally, Rojo), and that's an important feature on a modern CB. Still hoping he can renew his contract and pick up the spot, he'd make a great duo with Rojo.
He's got an above average composure. He always tries to play the ball with quality rather than shoot it up front, and he succeeds even under pressure. Solid defensive skills with large room for improvement. I honestly think he's got what it takes to become a reference in any english club in the near future. Really hope we don't sell him yet, but take good care of him if we do!

Very very promising.

I wonder if this is instead of Lascelles or that our interest hasn't diminished with Dier coming in.

In any case, I hope the first out is Dawson and not Chiriches.

I'd be happy with Lascalles still coming in, think he's got a lot of potential. Would then be pretty happy for Daws and even Vlad to be off if necessary.

If we bring in Lascelles as well I think we'll have 2 of England's possible future centre halves.
