Im not hating on Dier but I dont know why people are trying to pretend like he didnt just watch the ball go across him again and let the striker score. His awareness of who is around him is pretty awful unfortunately. Its a shame as he can play very well and then switch off in key moments - Romero didnt help on this 1 either.

The view from above. Pause it. You can see that he thinks it is Hugos ball, and if if isn't then he thinks Watkins is offside. I mean, he is wrong but it's not he just "watched the ball go across him". You can see initially he is thinking Hugo has it, but within 1 second his arm is up for the perceived offside.

He often defends the corridor of uncertainty poorly, and after all this time has only a patchy understanding with Hugo- who isn’t the bravest it has to be said

Love him, always have, always will.

He and Romero are made for each other as a partnership - great balance between agility and power, proactive defending and solid cover. Hope these two are our CB partnership for years to come.

I wouldn't rule out Rodon and Romero making a solid pairing either.

He shouldnt be leaving it to anyone else imo. He should clear the ball/block it just incase the worst scenario happens...which is exactly what happened as they scored.

Unfortunately this is what you get with Eric. He can have a good game but just switch off and make a costly mistake time and time again. He is in the Sanchez and Aurier bracket for me. One to upgrade in January/the summer for sure.

Total bonehead! Gives away the free kick with a stupid foul and then makes another comical error!

I would be fine with him pairing with Sanchez for cup games and low-quality European competition but we need a better CB than him for the Premiere League.

The own goal today, highlights the main negative aspect of Dier, his decision making. If he's not sure he hesitates or gets caught in two minds. Lack of decisiveness is never a good sign for a defender.

And here we go. Most of you would piss your pants and lose sleep for weeks if you witnessed someone in need of a de fib. He came back on and had a good over all game.

Credit where its due.

There was a moment in the second half today where Newcastle were on the attack and they crossed the ball along the floor attacking the near post. In past games when this has happened Dier has a habit of trying to shield the ball so Lloris can collect it, often unsuccessfully. Today, he took responsibility and kicked it into the stands for a thrown-in. To me, this showed that he's learning and improving. Played well today.

Certainly one family is grateful that is was switched on at the most important moment of their lives

Nobody is taking anything away from his quick thinking in that situation - he was fantastic. However, people are allowed to speak about his performances as a football player for spurs and the constant mistakes he makes. It is OK to separate the two scenarios.

Maybe not an hour or so after the game.... right?
