I wouldn't get too cocky, I'd still say Chelsea and City have us on this one.

But fuck me that's a good lineup. People said we needed depth, this is deeper than...something incredibly deep. Fuck you, it's been a long day.
How deep?

Apparently during Rafa's era there was a joke that did the rounds in the Liverpool board of directors along the lines of:

"why does Benitez play two DMs. Answer..because he hasn't got three."

Not sure what my point is. Probably something to do with scousers not being anywhere near as funny as they like to think.

On a serious note though, I know that BC seriously rates this guy and while I often disagree with the harshness that BC directs at some of our players I usually broadly agree with his points. So I expect Etienne to be a good addition.

Sandro, Capoue
Paulinho, Sigurdsson
Dembele, Holtby

Bale, Lennon
Chadli, Townsend

Soldado, Ade/Defoe

Starting to look pretty damn good.

He is good, and I have been a huge fan of his, when he came through the ranks at Toulouse he looked like being the real deal. Think Hudd but with movement. Or Carrick.

He gets his foot in to a tackle, is comfortable on the ball, can pass long and short and can use both feet.

Toulouse played him in a 4141, as the deep lying playmaker, and he generally excelled in this role, despite being very young, he was at the hub of everything good, and Toulouse play a possession game. He even bursts forwards and gets himself on the end of things occasionally.

But I have to say, this season he's been OK, but looked a little bit lethargic at times. A bit like his heart wasn't in it. I'm not sure if that was because all the decent players around him were being sold off and he was pissed off to be left behind in a team that started to struggle a bit, or the lack of decent players around him made it harder for him.

I'm not 100% that he's got what it takes to be a fixture in a top EPL team, but he has some good qualities and wouldn't be disappointed if he was brought in or surprised if he stepped up and fulfilled the potential he showed up to now.

he needs to play centrally though. As one of a "2" in a 4231, or in the centre of a 433. There's no playing him anywhere else.

I guess he could play at CB, I've seen him drop in there when CB's charge forward on occasion and he has the physique and skill set. I've never actually seen him play there for a whole game though.

Looks like we are finally going for it. Praying its not a season too late though.....

All about timing. I'm sure there is ITK at manager/director level too; some would have been on to Fergie retiring and the rest of it a long time before we knew.

Could be why we didn't spend big, big, previously.

Haha, well most of us who are unaware of French football these days have been basing our positive reactions to getting him on your enthusiasm for him, so you better know your shit big guy :D

TV money + finally trusting our manager + knowing how close we are to the CL and the windfall it provides = best window ever?

If we can keep adding without losing Bale it most definitely is. Even if we lose Bale but replace him with talent that at least is somewhat comparable (i.e. Lamela) and obviously add a CB + LB I don't think I could have foreseen how fantastic this window has been. The great thing is we're adding players that are actually really freaking good and not ones that make you scratch you head and say 'meh.'

My only complaint is still Caulker. If we could bring in a guy like Otamendi it'd go a long way in bringing me around to the whole vision.

The crazy thing is if we sign him I don't even think we're done making signings yet. What is this world?

It actually doesn't surprise me too much. Going back over the last few seasons I'd say we've been sensibly cautious. When Jol was in charge we had limited appeal to players, and looked to make gradual improvements as we overhauled a (with respect) fairly average squad. During the Juande years (yeah I went there) we backed him with a number of expensive signings, but I suspect Levy was wanting to see how him and Comolli would get on in their first season. After Bentley, Bent, and super Pav didn't do as well as hoped, coupled with our poor performances following the Carling Cup win, I imagine Levy remained a bit skeptical.

When Harry took over he was backed quite well initially. Levy didn't have much choice as we were still in a relegation battle in January. After that I suspect Levy was extremely reluctant to trust Harry in the market, and I also doubt he considered Harry to be a long-term manager.

AVB on the other hand is a completely different kettle of fish. He did brilliantly in his first season with us (where only Holtby could be described as a genuine AVB signing), and I imagine Levy sees him as a manager he wants to keep long-term. He needs to keep him sweet when he's a popular choice for big-money clubs (unlike pretty much any Spurs manager in living memory), so I reckon that Levy finally feels comfortable with remoulding the squad. Lots of young, versatile players will cut wage costs considerably as well, so the transfer window activity doesn't surprise me too much.
