We're at different ends of the scale here. Playing two defensive midfielders and playing on the counter against teams who like to go forward works, we've seen that when Mourinho took his team to the Etihad. It had nothing to do with a high line or quick transitions it was simply a tactic to stifle attacking instincts of the opposition. My point is that it can work depending on the circumstance which is what I alluded to earlier especially if we are winning a game.

The problem with our static midfield play only comes to fruition when the other team are set and have players behind the ball, our horizontal play is a result of us passing the ball sideways when we don't have a player to unlock a defence from deep, but I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about catching the other team off guard by winning the ball deep and distributing to forward players, you're talking about breaking down defences.

In fact it's something we tended to do quite well under Redknapp, I'll give you an example - look how deep we are against Milan, Sandro wins the ball, okay Modric plays the pass to free up Lennon but my point is that we're not pressing, we're sitting back in an organised shape and Milan are chasing the game as they need to score

As teams tend to go through the middle to look for goals and try and find space between the lines I believe that if you deploy the two together they'd find it increasingly difficult to go forward and would be vulnerable on the counter.

Every single aspect of play on a football pitch is connected, so whether or not we're talking two different things allegedly, "distributing to forward players" and "breaking down defenses" are directly related and to such an extent in which they're entirely relevant when discussing midfield tactics. In fact, we are indeed talking about the same thing. There is no detriment to having a CDM and a ball-winning DLP to effectively establish what you believe you're only talking about, distributing to forward players. Your citation of the example in Milan precisely suggests this very point.

I think you're absolutely right that it can work ideally, but not with the players we currently have and certainly not in the system that Poch tends to play.

The question of the cause of the static midfield is a case of the age-old "chicken or the egg conundrum." To me, it much more seems to be a lack of fast, incisive, transitional play that originates from us, thereby allowing opponents to get behind the ball, thereby forcing us to play horizontally more often for more time, and as a result of more cross-sections in time including us playing horizontally in front of larger numbers of defenders it provides the illusion that the opposition is the cause. The prevalence of it occurring with our play suggests the problem is with us, and other teams easily figuring it out, not the overwhelming coincidence that so many teams have fortunately had defenders behind the play with such a fortunate frequency.

Well that's unfortunate, I thought we were having a good discussion here but then you decide to act as though a ten year old. Disappointing.

No point carry on the discussion when we're obviously on two different wavelengths.

Sorry, didn't mean to give you the finger - I thought it was thumbs up :D

Oh fuck, now I look the ten year old :(

But fair enough, always okay with an agreement to disagree.

Jasper on spurs odyssey says:

Walker, Verts, Capoue, Mason I believe carrying slight knocks. Dawson injured. Dembele not sure.

I'd lose a lot of confidence in our set up if we sold Capoue. His partnership with Mason in CM was probably the highlight of our pre-season.
