34:09 Booking Jermain Defoe receives a caution.
36:36 Booking Caution for Jan Vertonghen.
41:38 Booking Leighton Baines goes into the referee's book.
45:01 Substitution Steven Naismith comes on in place of Kevin Mirallas.
69:17 Booking The referee books Leon Osman for unsporting behaviour.
75:04 GOAL - Everton 0-1 Spurs - Clint Dempsey (76 mins)
Spurs lead through a goal from nothing. Clint Dempsey takes the ball beautifully with a touch and turn into space before shooting early. The ball nicks up off the toe of Slyvain Distin and floats over the head of Tim Howard.
76:05 Substitution Gylfi Sigurdsson joins the action as a substitute, replacing Mousa Dembele.
80:34 Substitution Apostolos Vellios is brought on as a substitute for Leon Osman.
GOAL - Everton 1-1 Spurs - Steven Pienaar (90 mins)
Steven Pienaar rescues a point for Everton against his old club with a great header. Pienaar is not even in the box when Seamus Coleman stands up a cross from wide on the right but Pienaar times his run to perfection to meet the ball powerfully and head past Hugo Lloris. Great arrive.
GOAL - Everton 2-1 Spurs - Nikica Jelavic
It's not a point for Everton - it's all three! Remarkable. Another cross from the right is Spurs' undoing as substitute Apostolos Vellios turns the ball on and Nikica Jelavic toe-pokes the half volley into the corner. Pandemonium at Goodison. This Premier League is boring isn't it?

Everton and Tottenham meet with top-four standings in mind

Everton and Tottenham have experienced contrasting fortunes in recent weeks, but both remain in and around the top four.

The Toffees have gone three matches without a win to slip out of the UEFA Champions League spots, with draws holding David Moyes' men back.

Everton have already been involved in eight stalemates this season, so while they are proving to be difficult to beat, they need to rediscover the winning formula and build momentum.

Spurs have no such troubles at present, with Andre Villas-Boas' side in the midst of another productive sequence of results.

A run of three straight wins has carried the North London outfit into the top four and level on points with capital rivals Chelsea, suggesting they could climb even higher.

Tottenham did win four in a row earlier in the season, only to then see the wheels come off their charge up the division, so Villas-Boas will be aware of the need to establish consistency.

Everton
Everton boss Moyes may decide to name an unchanged starting XI for a third consecutive Premier League fixture, with there no fresh injury or suspension concerns at Goodison Park.

Phil Neville is among those currently working their way back to full fitness, with the vastly-experienced club captain continuing with his recovery from knee surgery.

Kevin Mirallas (hamstring) has been out of action for a month, and remains sidelined for the weekend, while Victor Anichebe (hamstring) is also no nearer to pushing for a recall after seven weeks on the treatment table.

Tottenham
Tottenham defender Michael Dawson has only a slim chance of recovering from his hamstring injury in time to make the trip to Merseyside.

Winger Gareth Bale is out with hamstring problem of his own, while Hugo Lloris is expected to replace Brad Friedel in goal after the American started Thursday night's Europa League win over Panathinaikos.

Midfielder Scott Parker (Achilles) and left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto (knee) are a week away from full fitness and defender Younes Kaboul (knee) is also unavailable.

Everton manager David Moyes could welcome back Kevin Mirallas and Seamus Coleman to his squad saying they have "outside chances" of featuring.

Victor Anichebe and Phil Neville remain on the injury list.

Tottenham's Gareth Bale and Michael Dawson look certain to miss out due to the hamstring injuries they picked up against Fulham last week.

Scott Parker and Benoit Assou-Ekotto are again absent, but may return against Swansea next weekend.

There has been plenty of talk recently about fourth place being up for grabs this season. As we approach the halfway stage of this campaign both these clubs will believe they are well placed to claim it.

For once, Everton have given themselves a solid early-season foundation to make their hopes more realistic. So often the perennial slow starters, they've picked up from where they left off in the second part of last season.

They've now lost only two of their last 24 Premier League matches. The frustration in recent weeks is that they haven't been able to turn draws into victories, but that shouldn't overshadow the progress made in the last 12 months.
I remember preparing for a trip to Goodison this time last year and David Moyes was the only Premier League manager who hadn't spent a penny in the transfer market. Then in came Nikica Jelavic, Steven Pienaar and Darron Gibson, who all had big influences in another top-seven finish.

They are now much better equipped to emulate Moyes's team of 2004-05 that finished in a Champions League qualification spot.

They will provide a stiff test of Tottenham's recent resurgence. The Europa League victory in the week was their fourth in a row since the defeat in the North London derby and the response has been exactly what Andre Villas-Boas was looking for.

Twenty-seven points on the road last season was a big factor in Harry Redknapp's team edging into a fourth-place finish, and they've already proved what they can produce on their day this time around by winning at Old Trafford.

They'll have to do it in the Premier League for the first time this season without the injured Gareth Bale, whose ability, particularly on the counter attack away from home, will be missed.

With a run of fixtures into the New Year without any of the top clubs to face, Spurs will feel it's an opportunity to gather momentum, but so will Everton, who haven't lost at home since March and are such a difficult proposition at Goodison.

Head-to-head
  • Tottenham have not won at Goodison Park in five attempts since a 2-1 win in February 2007.
  • In the top flight, Everton have conceded the most goals in the opening 15 minutes of games (six), Tottenham the fewest (none).

    Everton
  • Everton have drawn seven of their last nine Premier League games.
  • They are unbeaten in their past 11 league matches at Goodison Park.
  • Marouane Fellaini has scored five goals in his last five Premier League matches. With eight goals so far this season, he is the top-scoring midfielder in the Premier League.

    Tottenham
  • Tottenham have only kept one Premier League clean sheet away from home so far.
  • Spurs have conceded 23 Premier League goals this season. Only five other teams have conceded more.
  • If Premier League games had ended at 80 minutes this season, Tottenham would be top.

Adebayor to play up with Defoe for most of the game, obviously, but also to drop in and keep the link up so JD doesn't get isolated. Sandro to keep a close eye on Fellaini.

That last bullet point is quite amazing!

It is kinda - although I guess all those last minute goals we conceded weren't really undeserved, so it doesn't feel like we are on the cusp of greatness... even though, technically, we are/were.

We may not get much out of this game and if we don't its important to remember its not the end of the world.

We can win this game but obviously it's
Going to be difficult. I think whatever the result we will still finish above them. Everton have a decent side no question but can see them running out of steam towards the end of the season as their squad isn't as strong as ours when we have everyone fit.

Looking forward to this one. Two proper clubs with contrasting styles. Should be a cracking atmosphere at Goodison aswell.

Very tough game today, particularly without Bale available.

A draw would obviously be a good result but it's important to look at our league run after today.

Swansea (h)
Stoke (h)
Villa (a)
Sunderland (a)
Reading (h)
QPR (a)

Those are the games where we really need to put a run together, whilst hopefully also strengthening the squad in January and getting some important players back from injury.

A result today would be excellent but it's not the end of the world if it doesn't go to plan.

I think today will be extremely tight. I'm worried that we don't have the creativity in midfield to penetrate what will be a very compact Everton back 4 and Midfield 4. There won't be the gaps or space that Mousa is awesome at exploiting and I'm not sure he is able to carve them open with a killer through ball.

Agree with an above poster who says Fellaini or Beast will be sent off.

I don't think it will be a game for the neutrals but COYS let's show them what top 4 quality really is!!!

Got to agree with this exc. have Ade up top and Defoe deeper.
Would have Ade further up to hold up the ball as a release with JD running on beyond or picking up the 2nd ball and let him run at the defence. Bit like the Crouch & Co way of play where we were extremely successful on our travels.
Agree with Dempsey on the left, he'll keep it tight and hopefully not give it away as much as Gylfi who we could look to bring on if we need more running the channels.
Hudd may come on in place of Defoe or Ade later in the game to 'shore things up' in CM.

This is going to be a toughie in all honesty and we are going to need a big performance and after the Chavski and scum wins yesterday we really need to get three points in the bag. I also think that we need big strong players in this game and win that midfield battle, as such, I think any variant of 4-4-2 will leave us far to open, especially if Dempsey plays on the left and keeps drifting in leaving the left back exposed. I also think that this will be a game where we will need the presence of 11 players for the whole match and one that I don't think Defoe will be at all suited too, not unless he comes on later as a sub when Everton's back four are getting tired and leaving space, then I might start switching to a 4-4-2.
Dempsey ---------- Ade ---------- Lennon
Carroll
Dembele ---------- Sandro
Vertonghen - Dawson - Caulker - Walker
Lloris
I think Carroll could do a very good job in the centre today (or Sigurdsson) as what I saw him to do against Panathinaikos was chase that ball around giving players no time on the ball and getting a fair few interceptions in, so he can read the game well. He maybe small, but there is nothing more annoying than a little terrier nipping at your ankles constantly, especially one that can pass the ball.
