I don't mean to wind people up, but I'm staggered by the fact so many seem to think he might stay. The only way he stays is if negotiations broke down. He wants to go- very, very badly- so people need to get used to it. The only difference between Modric and Bale is Modric went on record in the papers.

I'm sorry if it is a stupid question, but... IF Bale is signing a new contract...say until 2017 or 2018.. Why is everyone so happy about that when everyone is saying he is RM bound for next year?

It ensures we keep the power in negotiations. If he doesn't sign a new contract, he will have two years left come next summer and it may be our last chance to get a massive fee. If he signs a new contract it means that if no-one stumps up the cash next summer he stays.

1. It means he wouldn't leave this year.
2. Madrid can't shortchange us on the fee next year like Modric because theres no way Gareth would want to run down a 3 or 4 year deal.
3. People still hoping that if we turn into legitimate title contenders, which we could with GB and RS, Madrid won't look as attractive to him next year.

Because as a contract runs down so does ones value (usually from the 3rd of a four year contract ie beginning of third year). So if he signs it would be another four years so his value next summer will be as much if not higher than this summer.
