Have a look at the prices going around for players, the summer is bad enough when PL teams are charged a higher rate because of the money awash in this league, January is even worse when it comes to transfers, no point over-spending on players just because others are doing it.

Players will be more expensive in the summer than they are now.

Which part of our transfer policy am I disagreeing with? I'm saying nothing is perfect and everything can be improved. Just saying 'we've done pretty well by not signing players in Jan, so we will continue not to' doesn't strike me as a progressive position. Particularly given the aggressive ambition of our direct rivals.

One (very likely) injury to Dembele and we're looking at a Dier / Wanyama CM or a Dier / Sissoko CM for season defining matches. Even without an injury, he can't play all these games coming up anyway. So we're praying Harry Winks shakes off this injury and blossoms overnight into a top class CM ready to drive this team in 3 competitions.

We need a central midfield player urgently and I don't think it's beyond the wit and power of the club to sign one.
Neither do I, but the transfer policy of the club has always been pretty clear and you are currently arguing that very topic with me.

Wrong thread for it tbh.

You're not happy with something that's pretty much been the same for many a year - bar that one time we were in the relegation zone ....

7 days for the transfer committee to become 'progressive'. Might be a long wait.

As much as we are itching for a signing and I would think it could help us in our aim for top 4 at least, I'd be willing to sacrifice any signing now in the explicit assurance that we would have tied down our main targets early for the summer.

I know it will be tough and agents will not want their best players going before the world Cup as 3 good games and their price triples. But that's what this transfer committee is paid well for.

Whether it's true or not, the theory of Pulisic won't go away and if that gets done along with a real top drawer CM (if both agreed like the Modric/Verging hen deals) then I'd be pretty happy with that. Maybe Sessegnon and Maddison also with a bit of haggling, especially if neither get promoted.

Prices may be expensive now, but you watch them inflate higher when the details of the new TV deal comes out

Do you think the bottom is suddenly going to drop out of the transfer market? What evidence is there that the prices drop from January to June?

That's always been the case though, the reason they're so expensive in the winter time is because no wants to sell their players because they don't have time to get replacements in and it creates unexpected squad unrest. Obviously more transfers take place in the summertime which is why you tend to get high fees but that doesn't discount the fact that those players would have been any more cheaper in the winter.

How much do you think the likes of Dier, Sanchez, Eriken or Son for example would have cost if we purchased them in January?
How much do you think Pogba would have cost United if they purchased him in Jan?

Etc...

I take your point. But if you look at the signings being made now, for instance Laporte to City for £60M. Would that have been less if they waited until the summer? Why are we trying to do a deal for Malcom now if we really believed he would be cheaper in the summer? Liverpool signed Suarez and Coutinho in January windows for very reasonable prices. We got Dele for £5M, if we'd waited until the summer it would probably have increased on account of his performances.

I don't think it's a universal truth that any deal is more expensive in January. Clubs obviously don't want to sell their best players mid season, but then they don't really want to sell them in the summer either. And, inevitably, there will be some even bigger prices paid when United, Real Madrid and PSG go shopping in the summer and the going rate will rise again.

My overall point is that we should be bold and act. Of course, it's difficult. Shark infested waters. But no CL going into the new stadium would be a fucking disaster, and we're already behind, and so vulnerable to one Dembele injury leaving us incredibly weak in CM (not to mention Dembele is inconsistent at best these days anyway).

I really wouldn’t put it past City to come back in for Toby end of the season regardless of who they buy now. Especially if Toby still hasn’t signed a new contract. Also Laporte is left footed and tends to play on the left side apposed to Toby who plays on the right. I could very much see Pepe wanting to pair the two.
City aren't signing old players, they're building for the future with Jesus, Sane, Sterling, Silva, Stones, Laporte, Ederson and Mendy.

Some of those are self created ...

When have Spurs ever genuinely gotten the cheque book out in the Jan. Transfer window?

The fact we are in 5th and amongst it with three big league games coming up is more a sign of how well we are doing. The fact they are having to spend in Jan. might tell you more about them.

I get your point, but the first of those three big league games is on the 31st. Deadline day. Yes, we're in fifth, but should we lose those three big games, making the top four with no chance to then strengthen will be a real uphill struggle. Let's see how well we are doing after those 3 games. We could be second or third, but we could equally be sixth.

Laporte has a release clause so it wouldn't make a difference when he was signed, he'd still cost the same price. Yeah I'm not saying that EVERY transfer is expensive in Jan but there's generally a difference in attitude's of clubs when in comes to keeping their players mid season as opposed to summertime hence the reason why put a high value on a player especially an asset as they're often under no expectations to sell their players. The Dele Alli example is solidifying my point, we loaned him back straight away therefore they had time to find a replacement and it didn't cause any unrest in the season.

How can you guarantee that if we'd sign someone we'd qualify for the CL? There's no assurances either way, you probably want o sign someone just because it's being made fashionable by the big spenders, they can afford to, we're not quite in the same boat.

They wouldn't ban him from club football over that. Interesting career path.
