Just want to let everyone know, next week 8/12 at 5.30pm on BT Sport 1...there's a film on the life of the great man, by the great man. I'm sure loads of us will tune in, it should be a fascinating 90 minutes.

Thanks for the heads up will get into that if I remember
see the boy Hoddle make his debut as a sub when I went to stoke away the year we where in the old second division
came on as a sub and scored the winning goal (2-1) if I remember right
magical player so much that wenger took him to France
used to go home and away in them days
he was worth the ticket money alone?

Amazing how memory plays tricks on us. We were in the second division in 1977-78. I was at the game at Stoke that season. Hoddle was an established member of the team by then, we wouldn't have won promotion without him. He made his debut as a sub in 1975. I think the game you are remembering was the game at Stoke in 1976 when he made his first start and yes scored in a 2-1 win.

Absolutely. We all knew pretty quickly what we had. The boy genius was something nobody else could boast. The original 'One of our own'. I heard he never got on with Burkenshaw and that's why he got his move to France. I guess we'll find out on the 8th on BT Sport 1 (5.30pm)

I can hardly wait!

Thanks for the info. Greaves and Hoddle are probably my two all time faves. So many to choose from over the past 60 years, but those two just shade it for me
Probably Mackay was better as an all round player than either, but those two lit up my life and so many others with their flawed genius

Yep. Jimmy and Glenn for me too. Absolute geniuses the pair of them. I'd have loved to see them play in the same team, but sadly, that was never to be. I can honestly say, I saw every home game from 1961 (first game on Jimmy's debut, December) to 1989, and I never saw a finer pair of players wear our sacred shirt.

You saw more of our golden years than I did, so I am honoured that we have come to the same opinion
Much love and respect to your good self ❤️?❤️

remember my mate at the time saying look out for this lad Hoddle coming on
Even as a 16 year old lad at the time being given at not so warm welcome by the Stoke Fans
thanks for the correction ?

I heard he never got on with Burkenshaw and that's why he got his move to France.
Without checking, Hoddle didn't leave for Monaco until something like three years after Burkinshaw had left the club. I mean, they may or may not have got on, i've never heard that but it's a pretty safe bet that their relationship wasn't the reason he left. I think he's been widely quoted saying that he wanted to experience another football 'culture' or something.

Sorry, I should put the record straight here. I never said them not getting on was the reason Hoddle left, just that I'd heard they were not an ideal match. Let's face it, if that's true (and I'm sure we'll find out next Wednesday) we never saw any adverse effects of them not getting on on the pitch!

Of course, I'd like to think what I heard years ago was rubbish. We were a wonderful side under Burkenshaw and the football we played was superb, culminating in that amazing night in 1984 when we won the UEFA Cup again at WHL. One of my most incredible football memories.

Obviously he was a great player for us, one of the very best...but does anyone else find him really annoying on co-commentary and pundit gigs?

He wanted to play against European competition. Had English teams not been kicked out of Europe, he may have stayed, at least for another season. But playing in another country was also on his bucket list.

I thought it was pleat he fell out with because he was going to leave for Europe a year earlier but agreed to stay an extra year & help Pleat in his 1st season. Pleat made some comments/wasn't as grateful as Hoddle thought he should have been

Yes but purely because I have no idea what he's ever talking about when he starts going on about tactical play (but we're not allowed to say that).

It’s always a bit strange when Glenn co commentates on Spurs games. He seems to go out of his way to appear unbiased but overdoes it like a lover trying to convince others that they don’t care about their ex any more, when it’s perfectly obvious that there is still blue and white in his veins, and always will be.
One great memory of Glenn when I was standing on the shelf near the park lane end in the early/mid 80’s (can’t remember who it was against) - just below us by the touchline he had three opposition players around him. He dropped his shoulders did a pirouette and left them all in a heap, then sprayed a 50 yard ball on a sixpence to Galvin running down the left- it was awe inspiring and something no one can coach. Looking forward to the programme so cheers @Spurslove for the pointer.
