The defence have lost confidence in him. There's no way back.

For a while there I thought he was truly something special. But the clangers in the 10/11 season were clangeriffic.

I know Friedel has his dissenters, but the confidence of the side was so much greater.

Stoof, there were several times last season, especially towards the end where Friedel clearly scared the shit out of the defence. I can't remember the game off the top of my head but Kaboul was clearly seen berating Friedel for not coming out and collecting stuff.

We aslo conceded more goals from crosses and set pieces again last year. Does that really inspire confidence in a defence ?

And there's fuck all mentally strong about being glued to your line. Mentally strong is having the bollocks to come and deal with shit so your defenders don't have to.

This bit was interesting, "But if you don’t play well, they don’t don’t help you at all. That made me feel terrible.”

Sounds like he wanted help, but didn't get it, which sounds a bit odd.

I know. How difficult would it have been for RatKnipp to have quietly taken him aside and said: "Listen, Octopus, y'know that ritual you have, in Brazil, where you smear your gloves in butter for luck, we don't do that 'ere" (y)

Yup...things would have been so much better if Brad had been a gay philatelist

Over the 38 games I felt more at ease with Friedel in goal. As did the other 36,000. Not being a ****. Just a simple fact mate.

Funny, because our defence didn't know what the fuck was going on. Glad you were one of the only ones that did.

He made many mistakes, didn't know whether to come for the ball on many occasions. For every 3-4 brilliant saves there was a clanger waiting, like a Richard Dunne at City, except less flab.

Gomes was a confidence player, he looked nervous all the time at one point. If a 30 year old can't handle the pressure at that age he never will. He was in his comfort zone in Holland without being overly worked.

Do me a favour Gomes

Apart from the last 6 months of the 09/10 you have been awful

It's nobody's fault but your own that you haven't played.

We brought in a keeper that isn't spectacular (because of age) but he's consistent and we feel confident with him in goal.

You seem a nice bloke and I wish you all the best but I hope you never play for us In a competitive match again.

Lol I wrote that as if he will read it :)

I must say, if Harry bullshitted him, then that's not very nice either. BUT, "2 mistakes" is laughably ridiculous. And of course Spurs didn't let him go last season -- friedel is like 70, what if he broke a hip? gomes makes the old calamity james look like gordon banks

c'mon now, let's not get carried away. anyone remember feeling seasick everytime the opposition won a corner with gomes out there? admit it, everyone was starting to hold their breath everytime Spurs sent a back pass to him. you don't remember him flapping away at cornes in the box?...

Great lad and pulled off some great saves but the writing was on the wall to be honest. Maybe AVB can get some thing out of him but I don't blame redknapp at all in buying friedel.

No, but I was starting to scared when people like Taraabt would pass the ball into the net from 30 yards.

I'm terrified when we have a corner kick against us still. Knowing that our keeper isnt going to collect or punch anything most of the time, just scream 'AWAY!'

Funny, because our defence didn't know what the fuck was going on. Glad you were one of the only ones that did.

I knew that if Gomes felt he had a good chance of getting something on a cross, corner or set piece he would pro-actively try. And he usually did get something on it. That might make the squeamish flap, but I believe the reality is, even when his contact wasn't clean it still removed the immediate danger and was far better than allowing attackers, who are always a fraction of a second ahead of defenders (who can only ever react to attackers movements) to have the advantage.

A keeper has the advantage over all others in those situations because he can use his hands and he is also given plenty of leeway by refs to muscle people aside. I like keepers that do this.

Add top this that Gomes was the best, and I mean the best shot stopper I have seen in a spurs shirt, then for me, and those like me, and I'm not alone as evidenced every time we have a thread like this, he still represented a better choice than line hugging, limpet lardies like Robinson and Freidel.

What I found particularly baffling is that in David James, Redknapp had an identikit situation but dealt with it totally differently.

I think a good sports psychologist was what Gomes needed. But this would probably of been to "mumbo jumbo" for Redknapp.

And I won't forget the look that Ledley gave him when he faffed about when Rosicky scored for Arsenal.

I wonder what these 'two mistakes' were?

My guess would be:

1) a series of unforced errors
2) the mistaken belief that people didn't notice them

Or the look on our defenders faces when he let Ronaldos shot through at the Lane, it was a " not again" look.

To be fair though he could/should have been giving that look to the defenders about 57 times more than they could ever give it to him. Our defenders, midfielders and attackers cost us way more goals with slapdash play than he ever did.

The two mistakes thing is nonsense but before he lost confidence agin there were threads on here saying he was the best since Big Pat.
I think it was one of the bad points of the Redknapp regime how much those he marginalized depreciated.
