I wanna come out in support of the big guy.

On my card he made 3 fantastic saves, conceded one goal after being elbowed in the face by Huth (watch at 39:21), had 3 flaps, 2 of which coincided with being cynically fouled.

Look at the incident 60:30. As Gomes jumps to punch, Huth throws himself at his legs. Again at 61:36 and 67:54. Finally of course at 90:29.

Because of Arry's attempts to reinvent himself as a diplomat (wonder why), he's not making enough of this. Red Nose would have launched a tirade towards Pulis for sending his side out with the sole intention of fouling their way to a result.

My bigger concern how we protect Gomes from the same tactics.

Moan and groad about dissalowed goals, yesterday for me was a victory for football. Proper football, being played the right way, over whatever it is teams like stoke like to think they play.

He was bullied but taken out far too easily most of the time. No one else to blame on his poor punch that lead to Shawcross' chance either. Still we won so no real complaints.

Even tony pulis admitted huth fouled Gomes just before the suppose controversial decision.
It is easy to say he is too soft but in reality no fouls should be allowed against any keeper. Unless Fifa changed its rules I think Foy was terrible and did not stop stoke in their cheating fashion to get a result.

Yes , It is in people's minds that Gomes is an unreliable foreign flapper (untrue) SO...when he's shoved in the net or kicked on the back of his legs...commentators or more importantly ,refs are already predisposed to ignore the assault and put it down to his Brazilian unreliability. Its a triumph of prejudice and an opportunity for thugs .I suspect Pulis organises this , 'great manager' my arse .

Dealing with this is another matter . Instead of getting ugly Gomes is letting it affect him and his confidence . He should adopt a forwards thinking and go straight and theatrically down if attacked by thugs . Just struggling to stay on his feet and trying to get the ball plays into the ****s hands .

He needs to make it plain and obvious he is being attacked .

Thing is that if Gomes pushes an attacker or does anything to defend himself , its a penalty and mebbe a red card....If a **** comes in and pushes him over best we can hope for is a free kick . Pulis has spotted that theres no real downside to assaulting the keeper , especially in a busy penalty area where a ref is frequently distracted .

Scummy scams like this will payoff for arseholes like Pulis unless the refs get wise Yesterday the ref was right there and witnessed the attacks on Gomes and did nothing . A disgrace .

I thought that too, but if you watch it in slow motion you can see the Stoke player running in to him just as he jumps to punch.

It was the same for all the corners, pushing and tripping every time.

Having watched the game again this morning I'm a lot happier that he wasn't "flapping".

The ref didn't give Gomes any protection today, Stoke clearly practice the dark art of roughing up the keeper while making it looking like the usual penalty box bumps and tangles.

On the other hand Gomes responded to the pressure really poorly. He remained great in open play, but from set-pieces swung into the box he was almost back to the dark days of two seasons ago. He just seems to get anxious and instead of deciding to stick or come for it on the merits of the situation he just blindly rushes out or not almost randomly.

When he wasn't bullied by their players he still made some shocking decisions with his positioning and decisions, it has to be said.
For me it was a return of the old days with punching the ball of his own defenders head and being off his line among the crowd of players. Tony Parks will sort him out though!

on MOTD when they said that he didn't get near the ball, then showed examples, and you just clearly watched Huth either backing into him, sticking his leg out to trip him, or pushing him in the face, and yet Mark Lawrensen didnt see it, just like the ref, very irritating when they then criticise Gomes unfairly. all in all we won, deservedly so :)

It would be very harsh to judge him on this game, Stoke are cheats and it's down to the refs to sort this kind of thing out. We won't come up against these tactics every week so I have 100% faith in Gomes, the man is a brilliant keeper.

Our players need to protect him more. HR and his entourage need to instruct our lads to cover him from such opposing targeting as did Huth several times and without the ref cautioning him.

he needs to watch the 'jens lehman' video, he was a master of drawing free kicks

i was also quite shocked at shawcross, he is an ugly player, makes me wonder about that tackle last season.

I don't think he's on top form yet, but he will be.

In addition, can I propose that anyone spelling his name with a Z on SC gets an automatic 24hr ban?

Gallas would have sorted Huth out the other day!

They got into his mind early and Gomes looked all over the shop.

Hopefully he'll sort himself out again for Wednesday but this is the issue with Gomes, once something doesn't quite go right he loses his head a little.

I know. It's a joke that a " football analyst" didn't see that trip andbthen goes on to complain gomes got nowhere near the ball.

I think we're gonna have to put up with Hansen's and Lawrenson's bitterness all season folks.

I don't think we should be surprised surely we all know his strengths and his weaknesses and Stoke attacked his weakness on corners, yes they did it in a way that crossed the line on occasions but we should protect him a bit more, nobody ever got between him and Huth and caused a fuss before the corner was taken, if they had done they'd have drawn the ref's attention to him and he wouldn't have had carte blanche to rough up Gomes all game.

Gomes is a genuine top-class keeper and we are lucky to have him.

However although he was muscled at corners unfairly at times, he was caught out at others. He punched a ball (unsuccessfully) off Dawson's head. Caught flat-footed in completely the wrong area of the box. After the first few corners he completely lost his conference. Thankfully his saves from open play were top notch.

Hopefully a couple of sessions from Tony Parks will bring back the Gomes of last season. Although I think this is down to the lack of pre-season game time Gomes got in favour of Cudicini. He needed more considering he went the whole summer without playing a competitive game.
