I think we can play this total football stuff at home against shit teams with our players roaming about like they are playing on a school playground but away from home we need players in proper positions with a proper shape.

Against Utd the team has to be this

Friedel

Walker King Kaboul BAE

Sandro Modric

Lennon Bale

VDV

Ade

So that when we lose the ball in their half we have a chance to defend the counter as players are in the correct shape.

I know Harry loves the way we play but this Harlem Globetrotter shit will cost us against Utd.

We are still 7 points ahead so it aint that bad but a couple of things need to be addressed.

This could just be in the match thread. You've hardly smashed open a tactical revolution here.

We 'mullered' Newcastle because they had the gall to come to The Lane and play 442. Then we do exactly the same at The Emirates.
Exposed as a sheep in wolf's clothing today.
5-2 didn't even flatter them.
If Parker had a brain half the size of his heart he might just make a decent player.

Except we got mullered when we went 451. 442 had Us 2 up and levels

lol the standard kneejerk thread. 2 weeks ago there was mass hysteria over wanting Harry to stay, not its Harry is not tactically good enough, poor team selection etc.

Ridiculous!!

I hate the fact that someone has an opinion and its tossed a side and deemed as knee jerk, I don't agree with everything the original poster had to say but most of it I do. We were really poor today and I think people have a right to feel aggrieved. I think it was crazy to start with 4-4-2 we deserved to get hammered.

What was crazier, starting with 4-4-2, or starting with a 4-4-2 which didn't include Lennon on the pitch and Bale, like, actually sticking to the wing a bit

I think that's a bit unfair on Parker, Jimmy. Maybe if the likes of Modric had a fucking heart, we wouldn't be so flimsy.

His heart isn't in Spurs is it , looks like his head has been turned - by the club above us .

Modric has been cruising for a while now .

Sorry to say it but it's time to cash in on him and get a replacement with something to prove .

That wasn't exactly what I was getting at-I think he's such a flaky player, to be honest. The way people talk about him, you'd think he was in the business of pulling us up by the bootstraps most times the shit hits the fan.

Yeah, but as I've just said in relation to Bale, we have to bear in mind that Modric spent most of last season being kicked fecking senseless all over the otich with zero priotection from the referees, a huge number of free-kicks not even given, and, of couse, no yellow/red cards in all of these instances.

JH is right, though, he is not a pull the team up by the bootstraps type player, is he :-|

I really detest the whole 'we need someone to take the game by the scruff of the neck' etc mentality, that shit doesn't exist in reality it's just a way of justifying Steven Gerrard running around like a headless chicken and banging 70 yard passes around and occasionally scoring a long range goal. It's a team game and Modric has been our best team player in recent years, without him we lack a heartbeat and one of the best brains int he Premiership. Just because he doesn't go steaming around in a manic Steven Gerrard fashion doesn't mean he doesn't care or whatnot or he doesn't have a heart.

We had it coming today because we defended like dickheads after we got a fortuitous 2-0 lead before half time, and came out in the second half without any coherent game plan, and continued defending like dickheads.

But we weren't really 4-5-1.

Ekotto was stuck in cement on the half way line for 45 mins.

Kaboul and King looked like USA and Iran on a blind date.

Walker had one leg but played at right back as per his actual role - there's 1 part of the 4-5-1.

Modric looked like he wished he hadn't taken his lemsip before kick off.

Parker had two mindset's - kick the opposition and suffer Zokora syndrome in front of goal (close eyes and hope for the best).

Bale was trying to work out his hourly pay rate for 90 mins, instead of tracking back, tackling and spending more than 30 secs on the FUCKING LEFT WING!!!!

VDV and Sandro kept mistaking the 'shadows' for the ball/Arsenal players.

Adebayor looked like an overpaid prick who couldn't give a flying fuck.

So basically, we had a goal keeper, a right back and nothing else in the 2nd half.

One of the very rare occasions when I disagree with you.

A player like Roy Keane could, literally, change the whole mentality of united, with a few choice words, a few crunching tackles, and a goal against the whole run of play just through sheer determination. That is pulling a team up by the boot-straps.

Modric is not one of those players. I don't slate him for that. I think he needs to play alongside someone like that, because if it is down to him and the crunching tackles ar eflying at him with no protection from the ref, and we are down, he needs someone like Keane to look out for him, and get him buzzing again by example.

Your not wrong but it was meant to be a 451 and we got mullered yet with 442 the awful formation that is terrible and never works we actually did ok and were 2-0 up.yet people are trying
To use this game as a justification for not playing 442

formation doesnt much matter if the whole team is going to roll over like that. in retrospect, once our two CMs were carded on the same play, we were screwed. bit unfair, too, since Arsenal were tackling hard before that without even a foul given - Riley kind of let the game get away from him for a spell there in the first half.

4-4-2 would of likely worked with Bale and Lennon both playing and 'staying' on the wings.

VDV, Sandro, Modric were clearly unfit and Walker was playing with a injury (prior to kick off and aggravated early in the 2nd half).

Where was Livermore? was Lennon unfit too ...

The squad and team selection were beyond bizarre, not the tactics.

I would be tempted to shake things up against Utd and play:

Friedel

Rose (don't rate him but Ekotto keeps reiterating how he only plays for the money, this clearly showed today and not for the 1st time)
Dawson
Kaboul
Walker

Livermore
Modric
Sandro

Bale
Adebayor
Lennon

What has he done? He was average in a world class first half display against Newcastle I would have looked good that day.... His positioning was all over the shop and he is genuinely the slowest player at the club......

Average? He covered 6 miles during the match, more than any other, scored a goal and put in a thoroughly decent performance.

Lennon was injured and by all accounts returning to full fitness.

Again agreed. Bringing on not one but 2 unfit players at ht didn't help either.was asking for trouble and was a
Massive panic freak out from redknapp

I understand this, of course you need motivators in the side to bark instructions and inspire others, I just get tired of this bizarrely English obsession in looking for that one 'hero' to single-handedly win a game of football rather than realise it's a team game, and failures like today are a result of poor team ethic all over the park, a result of poor tactical choices rather than expecting Luka Modric (not aimed at you) to suddenly become Roy Keane etc. We all saw what happened to Scott Parker when he tried to do just that, he got idiotically sent off for not engaging his brain before he acted and now we already have a set back in the United game.

Or maybe Scotty is so tired of covering other players shifts he needed a rest next week?
