'Leeds fans are absorbing the news that former favourite Harry Kewell has reportedly signed for Turkish club Galatasaray after Liverpool failed to offer him a new contract.
The Australian was in the Leeds side against Galatasaray in the UEFA Cup semi-final the night after United fans Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight were stabbed to death in the streets of Istanbul.
The Turkish fans were incredibly hostile that night and Leeds fans had to be escorted to the airport by police after the match.
While the alleged killer has been tried and convicted, the sentence was quashed and the case still drags on, leaving a bitter taste in the mouth of Leeds fans and many will think it inappropriate for Kewell to sign for Galatasaray.
Can’t he remember having to leave the pitch between two lines of riot police, who were needed to protect the Leeds team from the baying Turkish mob?
From a footballing perspective I would have though that remaining in the Premiership or going to Italy would be more attractive options, so have Galatasaray offered him higher wages than the other two clubs who were after his signature? Lest we forget, Kewell is not exactly short of a few bob, after the way he and his agent ripped Leeds off when he moved to Liverpool in 2003.
