Harry Redknapp was left "kicking himself" after not bothering to read the fine print of his Tottenham Hotspur contract, which he reckons cost him the England job.

This is nonsense

a friend of mine had connections to the FA via a club that was in the PL at the time

they never really wanted him because of the stench of corruption around him

Seems a very odd thing just to make up.

Wouldn't expect him to say they didn't want him because of his dodgy reputation in his autobiography.
Equally I wouldn’t expect him to print lies that could easily be dismissed, it would be a bit daft.

Redknapp also dicked spurs around about a new contract, because he wanted the England job, Spurs stuck by Harry through the Corruption saga, then he got greedy and they decided to move on and we landed AVB which worked out well!

Do you think the FA would ever come out and say they didn't consider him because he was "dodgy"? They'd be sued to the hilt.

I doubt he was ever more than a brief consideration, and I doubt very much they even knew about his contract conditions.

looks to me like Redknapp is trying to find a reason he wasn't in the frame for reasons other than they didn't want him.

I was enraged when Levy fired Harry, mostly because it messed up our stability in challenging the top 4. I was mad that Harry had thrown away a title challenge and ultimately the CL by losing focus, but he was still the best manager we'd had in my time of supporting Spurs.

Though AVB was clearly not the right long term solution, in hindsight Harry probably wasn't as well.

He got us playing some very attractive football at times, but tactically we were naive. Getting rid our soft underbelly only truly started to happen under Poch, though AVB probably laid some foundations with his focus on structured defensive play.

Fair points but I doubt that dodgy dealings were high up on the FAs checklist when the went on to hire Allardyce (after Woy).

At the time, I thought he would be ideal for that tournament. A short-term fix who would get the best out of our ageing “golden generation”. Having said that, he might have made a proper mess of it too. Do like that CYE reference to “having said that” enabling you to completely contradict yourself. So useful when I haven’t got a clue what I am talking about, as is the case here.

Always think we're a bit harsh on AVB! We sold Modric and Van der Vaart but still managed our highest ever Premier League points tally at the time. Then we sold Bale the next summer. The football wasn't the best but he did alright.

I'm pretty sure we paid a fair amount (wiki: £5m) to get him in the first place. It was no secret that Levy stuck a similar punitive clause in his spurs contract.

It's also pretty daft to believe that Redknapp read and OK'd the contract himself rather than have lawyers go over it.

Don't forget Harry had not long been in the press for all the tax evasion stuff. He was always going to be a risk that the FA wouldn't have taken.

We were definitely in a weaker position in terms of recruiting / retaining top players back then and AVB wasn't the first manager to suffer the consequences of this (selling Carrick, Berbatov, Keane, Defoe etc. didn't exactly help Jol). However, VDV 's departure was of AVB's making. He signed Sigurdsson, bluntly informed VDV that Gylfi was his new starting no.10, then benched VDV for the opening game of the season. It was a very odd way to treat a fan-favourite player who had contributed 46 goals & assists in 75 games during the previous two seasons...almost as though he was trying to turn the fans against himself.

I seem to remember the book having a bit about him missing out on signing Ian Wright that was shown to be lies by the timeline.
