I see nothing wrong with a glass of wine with an evening meal, but pints = lbs, and going and getting totally wasted at Faces during the season should be stopped. It's a small sacrifice to make for their pro footballer lifestyle. Off season they can let their hair down a bit more, but I don't really understand why is there a need for anyone to go and get so completely wasted that they fall over? I mean yes, I got that pissed once or twice when I was 17 / 18, but by the time I was 23 I had grown out of it, and I am neither highly paid, nor a pro athlete.

If they want to be 'normal people' and go and binge drink, then they should tear up their £xxxk a week contract to be a professional athlete. Yes pro athletes drink, but they do so responsibly (well, the majority), and often not for quite a while before their fight / race / swim etc.

I don't recall ever seeing Paula Radcliffe, or Nigel Benn, or Michael Schumacher in the tabloids getting wasted at an important time of their respective sports calenders. Why do footballers always feel they can have their cake and eat it?

Ledders should be ashamed of himself to be honest. More than anything he's let himself down.

And you accept our Club captain doing this?

Of course not. But I am not stupid enough to think Lennon, JJ, King, Hud and all of the other party boys who can be seen larging it all the time are going to give it up.

What are they going to do? Breathalyze players?

Not at all.

What some of us expect is professionalism and an ability to stay fit.

Do you think our players are not fit?

Do you not think that our players have been having the odd beer for the whole season?

I see no evidence that the odd beer has caused any of our players to be unfit..

Well I didn't read the whole thread but I have to say that I agree with Harry on this one. These guys are paid a fortune to be in top shape, and every tiny perturbation counts at this level. I was always amazed to see drinking/smoking/etc footballers.

Of course if they have a pint or a glass of wine the effect on their form is really minimal - and I think that if the keep it at that level it's tolerated and there is no problem. But wtf is Ledley doing out getting pissed like that?

In my work, for which I'm paid a hell of a lot less, we can't drink when we're on call and everyone finds that quite reasonable...

But you're on call, these guys have a day off, a few beers hurts nobody.

You're right, the situations are rather different, but I still think is that these guys are so highly tuned, that every detail counts - and that going out and getting pissed one night, a week away from a game, might have a really tiny effect on their form, but nevertheless it counts...

As someone mentioned Gazza - an absolutely brilliant footballer for a few years in spite of being an overweight drunk - imagine what he could have done if he'd been in really top form

If any ban like this is imposed it has to be imposed by the players themselves, it could be part of a whole push to the top four by the whole club.
In Australia Aussie Rules is the main sport ad most teams have a leadership group consisting of 5-8 players, nearly every club has a curfew and if these are broken the player is seen as not breaking the clubs rules but letting the rest of his team mates down, its all about the team and doing these things for each other and striving to make your club the best it can be.

If Arry brings it in, what happens when Modric has a beer? he gets banned? it spreads disharmony and negativity towards the coaches.

On the issue of whether i agree with it, not really, drinking a beer now and again doesn't effect you enough for a game 3-4 days later, however i do agree with curfews as in nobody out after 1 or 2, especially after playing a game. Plus nobody should be out the night before a game. The curfews are not just a drinking thing, it keeps players out of all sorts of trouble.

On SSN this morning they spke to Gazza and Chimbonda. Gazza can't see a problem getting drunk once in a while, Chimbonda said he doesn't drink very much anyway so it wouldn't bother him. Of the two I know who's advice I'd take.

Yep a Gazza from 1990 or 1996 but not the fucked up wreck from 1998. A lot of people thought he should've made the '98 World Cup squad but his last game for England he was subbed. He was bloated and out of shape. Maybe a few nights in would have done the trick.
