Has qualifying for the CL "really" made any difference...?

Unfortunately I've seen us lose so many comfortable leads in the past, I've become naturally pessimistic. I'm sure a few additions of some winners to the squad can stop the regular occurrence of those kind of results.

I know, I know:grin:

I just had a crisis in my life years ago, where I decided to stop being so pessimistic and cynical and negative, and began putting a positive spin on things whenever and wherever I could...it really is heart over head, sometimes, but that's the height of it:grin:

Yeh Redknapp ,of all our recent managers seems to have the nous to spot any complacency...and sort it . If he can't sort it , I'm not sure anyone can ...happy its him dealing with this .

...Oh and I'll chuck in some respect for Jordan (H's enforcer) in this regard too ....:hump:

Going back to the original topic of the thread, these quotes from Luis Suarez would suggest that CL has made a difference.

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11675_6255705,00.html

"Manchester United

are a great side and, along with Real Madrid are the most prestigious club in the world," Suarez added.

"You know if you join Manchester United and are there for any length of time you will win things.

"Tottenham hold appeal as well though, they are a team with great ambition and have done well to reach the Champions League.

"I like team that have shown ambition through the money they spend.

"If there are multiple offers form the Premier League I will take time to decide - but at the moment they are the two clubs that stand out for me."

then city will be the ideal club for him

Not only the comments from Suarez, but also the words from Sampdoria not wanting to face us. It just shows that teams are taking more notice of Spurs now. I honestly don't think we have a great deal of money to spend atm. Obviously we don't have Man City money anyway, but unless we start selling players and bringing money in, I dont think there will be many new faces. Which is probably why we're closing in on a few cheaper signings in the meantime. I think the bigger signings are likely to happen later in the window when a few players are sold.

Like in 60-61, you mean?

Exactly ! For those who don't know the Double Team " capitulated " by the same score to Burnley after they had clinched the Title . Even Bill Nick ( a true perfectionist ) dismissed it as irrelevant.

Saying the irrelevant Burnley match last season has some great significance is like saying our 4-0 win over Bournemouth has us looking good for trophies this year.

burnley away certainly wasn't a good indication of our team

the thing it showed, if it showed anything, was that Gomes was our most important player last season

and I'm still not convinced, even with the return of CC, we have proper cover for our very own octopus

Burnley were a much better side in the old days, they came second to us in the league not exactly the same thing is it?

The match had as much significance as a friendly match. Once Arsenal scored against Fulham reserves the chase for 3rd place was all over. It's not surprising our players switched off after their supreme efforts in getting into 4th place. Whether we lost against Manure or Burnley in that match I couldn't care less .
I agree with the post that it emphasised our need for effevtive cover for Gomes. The luckiest thing for us all season was that he didn't get injured when it mattered otherwise I doubt we would have made 4th.

We are 3 weeks away from potentially the biggest game financially in our recent history, yet we are no closer to signing a "top class" player who can make a difference it seems. We have been snubbed by Joe Cole since then, not that I wanted him, and are it appears to be chasing players who would sign for us irrespective of potential CL football or not. Scott Parker..... WTF is that all about (if Sky are to be believed)? He has snubbed us 2 or 3 times already and everytime went for the money, why or why are we chasing a 29 year old average player at best? Surely the huge trasnfer fee + wages that will go on him should be used to address the positions that DO need upgrading i.e. Forward line.

We don't know what's happening. Lots of rumours as usual. For all we know we could be on the brink of 2 world class players. We've been linked with good players and average players. Personally i'd rather we continue to get linked with poor players. We don't need to be linked with the best players. The most important thing is the players we actually sign.

I have faith that we'll sign someone (or 2) who will greatly improve our side. Who knows, we may need to qualify with our current squad of players (the same squad that got us 4th in the first place) before the top players commit to us. My biggest concern is players getting cup tied for the Champions League. Not as much the quality of players we can attract.

SunnyD why don't we have this discussion when we actually kick off. If the market was awash with deals, and we were sitting on our hands then you may have a point. But it's not.

It just seems you are rebumping this thread each time to complain and have a pop at the management, and looking for a chance to say 'I told you so' absurdly prematurely. It's boring.

Haven't read all replies, so don't know if this already has been postet.... But I think there is a difference... Don't think that our profiles has been linked that strongly with other clubs - maybe it's because that we hopefully can offer CL football this seson

i am confident that our current squad, with a ok draw, will make the CL group stages. It's when we are there that I am worried about aswell as the upcoming PL season. Our biggest fault last season was putting the chances away i.e. forward line. Since the end of last season City have bought very well imho, Lpool have made some shrewd signings and NO WAY will they be as poor as they were last season again. They are 2 of the 5 teams (M.Utd, Chelsea & Arse) who will put up the biggest fight for a CL place, if we want to prove last season was no fluke and put a good show on in the CL then we must bring in a top class forward/s. Parker is not good enough for our first team imho. When you consider how much the total package will cost to bring him I would much rather keep hold of JJ and O'Hara, besides we got a new CM/DM in Sandro....

No ones having a pop at the management, I'm just expressing a concern. This is a forum where we are allowed to do this right...?

God, it's the whole let's spin the positives out of all our competitors and ignore the negatives. Liverpool have made some shrewd signings? What like, J Cole you who didn't want or some Scottish kid full back. You do know they will most likely lose Mascherano and who knows where Torres will be or if he is fit?

City is a freak case so why keep bringing the up?

You have expressed it. It's irrational and boring. Thanks for sharing, we know where you stand.

Shrewd signings for them seeing how poor their squad was last season. Roy will be given the money from the Mascherano sale and I'm pretty sure he will spend it more wisely than the fat Spanish waiter did.....

i tell you what, I'll bury my head in the sand and follow the SC party line and not worry about the players we are going for, all this when there is a glaring weakness in our team that so far has not been addressed.
