Eriksen seems to be playing more in the middle and collecting from deep a lot.
Plus the 3 up top seem to be exactly that a 3 man unit.

From around the time of the Leicester game, we do seem to be going more this way. Both Eriksen and Mousa playing ahead of Dier.

Pochettino is a huge fan of the Bielsa style, and his version of 4231 becomes more 3331 as the DM drops between the centre backs to form a back 3, as the full backs push into wings backs. This was hugely in evidence against Watford away, and Dier allows is the flexibility to do this.
However, equally, like today, Eriksen is more than capable of dropping deeper into midfield to form a 433, so despite similar teams, the fluidity in the lineup to adapt from a starting 4231 to either 3331 or 433 shows quite a broad tactical option.

I think you're right. Eriksen has been coming a lot more deeper rather than staying close to Kane, Lamela and Chadli have been rotating with Kane as the furthest forward - a 433.

Last time we played Watford we played 3 at the back, wouldn't be surprised if the heat map was similar today.

Don't be silly.
There have been many erstwhile scribes on here who insist on saying Poch has no plan B and can only play 4-2-3-1

It's 4231 with the sort of rotation and positional fluidity that you get with this shape once it's ingrained (if you wish to utilise it fully).

It encourages total football. ;)

Interesting listening to the interview with Trips. To paraphrase - that's how the boss wants me to play, as a right winger, and get on the back stick. I think the system we play is difficult to illustrate using the traditional numeric system. If anything (particularly in possession) it's:
2 CBs
1 Dyer
3 FBs Dembele
3 assorted others running around
1 HK

Aint we been playing that all season? 4231 is essentially 433 when it wants to be.

I think you're right and wrong. In as much as football is fluid there are times when teams are sat deep and the final third is over crowded and/or our two CM's are slow at moving the ball forwards, Eriksen does come deep looking for the ball and trying to make something happen but we are definitely not playing it by default. And you could also say with the way Dier drops so deep (sometimes even against Watford he found himself behind the CB's) we are playing a 3151 and many other variations in between.

As @thinktank said, it's just how any formation flexes and bends, but it is a 4231.

Pochettino, if you ask, I think he would be bored about a question of naming or putting number combinations on his formation.
He doesn't care. What he plays, is a game focused around possession. If we have it, if we don't have it, and what to do if we don't have it. That's what footie is to him. Number combinations are superfluous at best.

However, as Bus-Conductor says, it is a 4231. When a team plays a clean 433, you will know it, instantly. At least I think so.

To expand on this from @littlewilly :
2 CBs
1 Dyer
3 FBs Dembele
3 assorted others running around
1 HK

The 3 assorted players are kind of different kind of the same. They are the same because they can switch roles. But they are different, because they have completely unique responsibilities. There is one guy taxed with being a 2nd striker, removed to the left. There is one guy taxed with being first line of defence, removed to the right (often Lamela). Then there is one guy in a traditional AM position in the centre.

This is also vital to Poch, no two players holds the exact same duties and responsibilities on the pitch. Every player has a unique set of tasks. Which ties into the fact that number combination doesn't really matter to him

There has been a clear change this year, regardless of whatever numbers are associated with it. Fortunately, Poch seems to have finally abandoned the idea of a true double pivot in midfield, and assigned more clear cut duties to the CM2. This move has improved us both offensively and defensively. I agree that Eriksen also seems to be dropping considerably deeper when he plays the central role. I think this has also been a very beneficial move. Eriksen seems to be getting the ball a lot more, and with much more space centrally.

In Alli and Eriksen, we seem to have two very different No 10's. I tend to prefer Eriksen's type in that spot, especially in his new role, but Alli's goal-scoring is difficult to pick against. Very nice having the options of depth and variety that we have at our disposal.
