I just got a promotion and big raise at work.

In celebration, I'm doing something I've wanted to do for a while: travel to London.

I'm coming from the US and am trying to schedule it so I am there for the NLD on the weekend of March 15th.

Any advice or tips from Londoners would be greatly appreciated. I am doing my own research, but any ideas from the natives would be incredibly helpful.

Also, is there a good way I can try to make sure I get 2 tickets to the NLD? I know they go on sale to the general public on Jan 30th, but how many tickets are usually left by the time that happens?

Thanks in advance, and cheers

Tips
1.
March can be quite cold. Bring some warm clothing.
2.
London - like any big city is full of folk that will want to take your money by whatever means possible.
Be streetwise.
3.
Don't each "Richmond" sausages - They are pretend Irish (Oirish) sausage and are full of pink mushy gack.

Don't eat in any central pub claiming to be a "Traditional Pie Shop". Sort of places where the UK gets it's reputation for bad food as far as tourists are concerned.

On the ticket thing, I'd say you'll struggle. You either need to buy a bronze membership now, or you may be able to get one for an arm and a leg from one of those West End (downtown?) ticket sellers.

As far as London is concerned, try and get a place up near the high road in Tottenham, any YMCA place is usually good, or go for a budget hostel, they sound down-market, but in Tottenham itself, they're actually of a very high standard!!!!

:p Which you should of course ignore.

Depending on your budget I'd look to stay in one of those boutique type hotels in East London, but if it won't stretch then places like the Premier Inn, or Ibis are serviceable if sterile. Most of the good stuff is in East and East Central London these days, all the markets, fashion, music, street culture etc. if you want a bit of upmarket, go for West London, and central London's good for doing all the tourist stuff. If you're short of ideas when you get here I'm sure there's plenty who can point you in the right direction.

Well, poo. That's what I was afraid of. I will see if I can wrangle a couple from a ticket broker once they're sold out. If not, I'll go to a pub and watch with those there.

Thanks :D

Assuming the NLD is right out, it is easier to get tickets to other matches? If I can swing it to be able to go to a Spurs home game during my stay, I'll happily change my dates.

I'd rather go to a 'lesser' game than none at all.

For instance, will it be easier to get tickets to the matches vs Sunderland or Fulham in April?

We will be on the run in to winning the Premier League by then.

you'll easy get tickets for these if you log on/phone in the hour they go on General Sale. I'd say the same with any outside the big games... always works for me.

You'll get a ticket for the NLD for anything between £100-£200 outside off of a ticket tout (scalper) but tone down your american accent as you may be asked for more! Good luck.

Congratulations on the job thing. I love London and hope you enjoy the best place in the world.

One small thing; travel in London is very expensive so make sure you buy an Oyster card to use for getting around on all public transport

Try e-mailing the club/ticket office and explaining that you are coming from overseas and were wondering if they could help/advise you on getting a ticket for one of the lesser games. I'm sure I read somewhere on SC a while ago a post from a supporter who did that.

It will only set you back £50 for a bronze membership and then you can get tickets to the NLD before they go on general sale. The club has a calendar which shows all the on sale dates, so if you're organised and get on the website the moment they're on sale and don't faff about trying to decide which seat would be perfect then you should be fine.
