The indepentdent is very accurate with Spurs news, has been for the past few years.

the independent is definitely one of the more reliable papers, esp since they are less sensationalistic and don't really mention targets that don't make sense. that said, i remember them saying we offered lennon to liverpool in an exchange for keane, which sounds very silly to me (and according to the ITKs, we very much rejected the idea).

I haven't watched Barry to comment enough on whether he would be our Carrick replacement, although even what little I've seen would suggest he is an upgrade on Zokora, but what I don't understand is people's references to him being a Spurs fan, so what ? I'm a Spurs fan, should Harry sign me ? David Bentley is supposedly a Spurs fan, fat lot of good that did us. If the reference is to suggest that he would come to us because he supported the team as a boy then that is naive.

Let's not become the next Toon Army and fixate on where management and players come from or which team they support.

I said a bit a go that I thought Bary would be someone we would definitely bid for i the summer though wasn'tconfident of getting him.

As time has gone on we have improved and Villa have gone limp, so we may look an attractive prospect if HE believes in himself as being one of the key pieces missing in the spurs jigsaw to be able to push for the champions league.

Lennon Palacios Barry Modric

That is one hell of a midfield and it really does have everything. Pace, creativity, grit, simplicity.

Can't see it happening

He wants CL football and there is a good chance we won't even be in Europe this season, sadly he would see us as a backward step

Was'nt that the reason why Keane went to pool?

Champions League football and the ability to challenge for the league were also key factors.

I think we're still a better prospect than Villa.

The reasons Keane went to Pool were CL football and higher wages and more chances to win trophies. Otherwise he'd just go to Celtic.

Very few players nowadays would take a step down or possibly stall their career just because they support a club (after all we have several gooners in our first team). Barry leaving presents a risk to his cozy career at Villa, and the only things he would take that risk for would be for CL football (pool) or insane wages (citeh).

Fingers crossed that Liverpool are broke. He is a Yid.

:hump: whole family are big spurs fans. This one may well happen. Not as far-fetched as it sounds. If Pool go for Tevez, they wont have enough in the kitty for Barry as well.

No, the point of him being a Spurs fan is that even though we aren't in Europe, or title challengers, he may want to play for his childhood club. Its got nothing to do with having only spurs fans in the team, its about his emotional attatchment to the club. I'm sure if liverpool come in for him (the only champions league team who would be interested), he will go there, but If they cant/wont buy him, I would think we would be favourites to sign him, due to him being a fan.

Oh, and Bentley isn't a Spurs fan.

Oh, and we have already replaced Zokora. He is a replacement for either left mid, or centre mid with Modric going in the other position.

Midfield of Lennon Wilson Barry Modric would be our best midfield in a helluva long time

If Villa are offering £70k pw and our highest earners are on around £45k pw I can't see that we could possibly offer something comparable. Villa have European football next season and at least as good a chance as us to compete for 4th. I can't see that he would leave Villa for Spurs unless he had burnt all his bridges, which doesn't seem to be the case as he reconciled with the fans and has been a key players for them again this year. I do think he would be a great signng but I don't see it happening.

Did I miss us qualifying for the CL?

He has said time and time again I will only leave for CL football. Now time and circumstances change things of course but I still believe he will be thinking this way at present and our only possibility would be if he doesnt get the move he hopes for after a long drawn out saga through the summer.

Personally, I struggle to see what his plus points are apart from being steady and reliable but there you go.

I also wouldnt be surprised to see the Goons sniffing around Barry this summer.

Reasons this could happen:
I have a feeling Liverpool won't be in for him in the summer - think they'll have other more ambitious targets they'll need to save money for.
Without the distraction of Europe, Spurs will have a better chance of cracking the top 4 than Villa with their European distraction. Barry could possibly be persuaded that forfeiting one season in Europe (UEFA, not CL) in exchange for a more glorious career in the medium to long term with your boyhood team is not necessarily a bad trade-off. The poor finish to the season they've had and the huge momentum they've lost, compared to the opposite happening at Spurs, surely would not have been lost on Barry.
Emotional appeal of playing for your boyhood team, at a more glamorous club, with the prospect of a new stadium, etc.

woody and Robbie both on 60k, so 70 not too far fetched

10k a week extra is still quite a lot, £500,000 over a year. If we did offer Barry that extra money then there may be other Spurs players who think they are also deserving of such an amount. There are probably players that Levy would go above the wage structure to secure but is Barry one of them?

Money aside, I'm not sure the Spurs fan arguement holds much water. He has been with Villa for years so it's likely he has as much an affinity with them as he does with us. I can't see him leaving Villa to go to a club that isn't a definate step up. At the moment, Spurs certainly aren't a definate step up from Villa. At this stage in his career he'd probably want to go to clubs who have a good chance of winning big trophies. I would have thought he'd be far more likely to go to Liverpool, if they renew their interest, or Arsenal who need a couple more experienced heads.

So you fail to see his plus points but concede that the goons will probably be sniffing around him? lol

yep the Goons need a steady reliable holding player in midfield to complement Fabregas - does nothing out of the ordinary but lets Fabregas play whilst keeping the door shut at the back. Barry does this well and adds experience to a young squad.

As I said struggle to see any point plus points above this but fit for purpose for the Goons requirements.

Think you may need to think a little before you knee jerk post
