Redknapp looks for new leader in Barry

Manager must convince his chairman to spend big on experienced Villa midfielder
http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...new-leader-in-barry-1687706.html?action=Popup
The Spurs manager Harry Redknapp hopes to tempt Aston Villa's Gareth Barry - who has said he wants Champions League football - to White Hart Lane

Harry Redknapp wants to sign Gareth Barry this summer to give his Tottenham Hotspur team the experience and leadership he believes they have lacked this season. The interest in Barry is long-standing, as is the interest in Roque Santa Cruz and Glen Johnson, and Spurs hope that Liverpool's uncertain finances mean that they will be able to tempt Barry away from Aston Villa where he has one year left on his contract.

At 28 years old, Barry does not fit the profile of the kind of player whom the Spurs chairman Daniel Levy usually signs – Levy normally prefers to buy younger, less-expensive players. However, Redknapp is convinced that the club needs older, more experienced players to set a more professional mood around the training ground and Barry fits the bill perfectly. Another sticking point for the Spurs hierarchy is the wages the player is likely to command.

Villa are understood to be offering Barry around £70,000-a-week to sign a new contract at the club. In contrast, Spurs' highest-earners command around £45,000-a-week. Redknapp has become increasingly frustrated this season at the lack of a natural leader at Spurs, especially since Ledley King disgraced himself with his drunken antics on a night out earlier this month. The Spurs manager faces competition for Barry's signature from Liverpool and Manchester City.

Redknapp must also convince Levy that Santa Cruz, 28 in August, is also a good investment despite his age and a patchy record with injuries. The Paraguayan has had an operation on his knee and has not played for Blackburn since 4 March which will also give Levy cause for concern if he is asked to pay upwards of £10m for the striker. Johnson, who played under Redknapp at Portsmouth, is also regarded as a viable target despite Liverpool's interest.

Barry is now represented by his former Villa youth team-mate Michael Standing after ditching his former agent Alex Black who was part of the botched attempt to join Liverpool last summer. Standing, who joined Villa as a teenage trainee with Barry from Brighton, is not a Fifa-licensed agent. A former player with Bradford, Walsall and Bournemouth among others, it is Black who has been entrusted with negotiating what will be the most important contract of Barry's career. He quit playing for Lewes FC after the club were relegated from the Blue Square Premier this month.

There is a major clear-out in the offing at Spurs this summer with David Bentley, Darren Bent, Alan Hutton, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Tom Huddlestone and Pascal Chimbonda all available. Players out on loan such as Giovani Dos Santos, Chris Gunter and Kevin Boateng amongst others will also be invited to find new clubs. Redknapp hopes that will generate enough funds for him to sign experienced players.

Any talks over King's proposed new contract with Spurs – he has one year left on his existing deal – will now be put on hold after his embarrassing drunken performance in Soho in the early hours of 10 May following the draw with Everton. The Spurs captain was alleged to have racially abused a a nightclub doorman and his lack of care toward his chronic knee problem has caused great alarm at the club.

The low estimate, in millions of pounds, that Spurs could be asked to pay for Barry.

It's not gonna happen, but seriously, I really believe this is the type of player we need. Him and Palacios in the middle.

Modric------Barry-----Palacios------Lennon

Looks damn sexy.

would be amazing if this story even had an ounce of truth. Captain material, real quality player, grabs matches by the horns, is the personification of consistent.

but, not gonna happen.

While I'd accept Barry here, I can't see why he'd come when he has stated multiple times he would only leave Villa for CL football, and has in general proved loyal to them in the past. He has had an average season - Petrov has been much better - and with Liverpool interested in deepening their squad, would probably be more expensive than he should be (not 20 million as stated last summer though, given he only has one year left).

I don't want RSC, he has had injury problems his whole career and we don't even have a good crosser at the club with Bentley leaving. With his age and injury record he wouldn't play enough games to justify his signing, let him go to Citeh. If Hutton leaves, Johnson would be a great buy but rather expensive for a RB, and he will demand starts (and I really don't want to see Corluka go).

Moreover this sounds like fairly dubious reporting. I read the exact same thing recently - Barry, RSC, and Johnson - by a supposed ITK on another forum (probably 606, but I can't remember exactly).

Apparently Stephen Ireland is being messed about by Man City, if their is a chance we could get him i'd hope Harry would be on the case.

As much as i want to like him for being a yid, i'm just not overwhelmed with Barry although he does seem to do a job in midfield. I'm hoping that it's because i don't see what he does week in week out. If it ever did happen, i hope it'll be like when we signed Carrick, a player who is not spectacular by a long way, but still manages to run the midfield.

Villa fans think he's overrated, though Villatalk is a pretty poor forum to gauge opinions from and a lot of us didn't realize how important Carrick was either. I would prefer a younger midfielder with more pace, but Barry at least is proven, naturally left-footed, versatile, upgrade on JJ. Wouldn't be near a second Carrick imo but still an upgrade.

would be excellent move, i know he is Spurs fan but problem is teams like Arsenal, Liverpool & Man City need him as well. Giggs & Scholes are too old, hope Owen Hagreveas is back soon !

I'm pretty sure this won't happen.
However, I think the perfect partner for Palacios would be that Xavi type, a dictator of the game who can score his fair share and protect the defence too, and Barry may well be the closest thing too that who we have a shot at gettinf as that mould of player is few and far between. With Palacios next to him I'd hope he'd get forward more than he does at Villa though.
Not for more than £12m though.

Santa Cruz? Well, if he stays fit he's a perfect partner for Defoe or Keane, but it is a big if, and he has a largely inflated value. I'd prefer one of the target men making waves in either Germany of France.

Johnson? I'd rather saw off my left foot and use it to kick myself in the balls.

This first team would be quite tasty though, no?:

...............Gomes
Corluka Woody King Ekotto
...............Palacios
............Modric Barry
Lennon
............Defoe Dzeko

Even this one ain't too shabby:

..............Cudicini
Hutton Dawson Dervite Bale
...........Huddlestone
..........Jenas O'Hara
Giovani
..........Keane Bent
