Is Connor Wickham the answer?

And if so, what's the question?

I've had a look on YouTube and I haven't been hugely impressed, but then people who know a whole lot more about football than me say he's the real deal.

I know one of the main retorts will be he's a whole heap of potential, while what we need is the finished article. But is he worth a go anyway?

Keep one of Pav, Defoe and Crouch, buy Wickham and A.N. Other more experienced striker, maybe?

(Then again, he already looks like he'll be better than Carroll, so shall we say £40m?)

Also, I'm uncomfortable with the words 'Member' and 'Ronny Rosenthal' being so close together in my profile bit.

Anyway, sorry, back to Connor Wickham...

I haven't seen hardly anything of him but 11 goals in 58 games (25 games started) doesn't sound too impressive to me even if he is only 16.

To be scoring goals at that level at 16 is impressive, not saying he is 'the real deal' but he is doing OK. Also worth remembering that Carroll wasn't banging them in as regularly in the Championship. Any kid at 16 is a punt and I wouldn't want to get him only to see him rotting on the bench.

Not the immediate answer, which is what we could do with. Also, the english market has been so highly inflated he'll probably cost stupid money, more than is justifiable on potential.

Who can say for certain? I was impressed with him against Arsenal, he showed he wasn't afraid of the big names, and hassled and harried their defenders. Shows he has the composure for big matches.

Allegedly, according to the FM11 thread in Computers and Consoles, he is "meh".

No thanks. He is not exactly smashing up the championship is he? Why buy potential when we need a proven quality goal machine...problem being there ain't many of them around....

Worth a shout if we can find a way to sign him and keep him at Ipswich for a while, but we can't afford to throw a 16 year old in up front for a side chasing the top 4. The lad needs games to develop. He'll cost a fortune now though I reckon if the rumours about Liverpool, Arsenal etc are true

Depending on the price we should go for him. Agree with selling Defoe and Pav. Get in Wickham and someone class.

A 16 year old who can't get in Ipswich's side?!

Probably an upgrade on Obika as our U18s #9, but won't get near our first team for at least 5 years.

He's 18 in a few weeks. Every time I've seen him, which is only about 3 or 4 times admittedly he seems to have all the power of a titmouse in his shots. But anyways, big and strong and very very young for a striker. Anything under or around £10m and yeah, take a shot.

He won't be the immediate answer though, just like Bale, he'll take a good yr or so to settle in properly.

He's in a similar position in terms of 'achievement' and 'potential' to that Welsh lad we signed a few years ago. You know the one; got injured for a while, turned out to be all right. Had that spell where the team couldn't win with him in... oh, it'll come to me... had a decent left peg on him... no, it's gone.

Wickham would surely be a great signing. Huge chance for him given his attributes and also every chance that even if he didn't work out that we'd get our money back. If Levy could with Kaboul first time round then Wickham would be fine. So, I don't see a downside. Even for 10-12m (in installments).
