Is Defoe a Legend?

So we all know that Jermaine Defoe is a Yiddo, but is he a legend?

I don't particularly rate him very much and I know that view is shared by many on here. Although I remember when he joined and I was sure he would become one of the league's top hitmen, getting 20+ each season, I was proper excited by his joining us (the first time!!). But despite not rating him much I am often surprised by the hate from some.

At the end of the day he has been a loyal servant for many years and is, I think, our 5th highest goalscorer. So does this automatically qualify him for legendary status? Or does become a Spurs Legend include a very different kind of threshold. I remember a thread asking if VdV should be considered a legend and some did, so what qualities are required?

Yes he is, all time leading scorer in Europe.
No statue though, bit like handing out an mbe to Paul Collingwood in 2005.....

I think the leading goalscorer in Europe thing means he is certainly in that bracket, because that is figuratively a history book entry.

Dunno about a legend and I can't think about it too much as my heads hurst after making too many serious posts today, but certainly worthy of more respect that he gets on here.

I can't even believe people question this.

If you don't like him or got very frustrated with him then fine but to question whether or not a man who has scored 100+ goals, 143 in fact, for the club is a legend goes beyond farcical.

A legend is a one club man, isn't he? Or at the least retires at the club, surely?

Not sure about that. Greaves and Hoddle are both undisputed club legends, and neither retired at Spurs.

For me, the only player deserving of that status more than Defoe in recent years is King. Record goal scorer in Europe, came back to us when we were struggling in the league (to a hero's reception, despite being dressed like a twat), has an impressive goal scoring record in general, and clearly loves the club. Yeah I'd be happy for him to be considered a legend.

Yip, can't argue with Hoddle and Greavsie

I cant say defoe is a legend, he hasn't been number one choice striker for most of his time here. He is a loyal servant no doubt and is a loyal servant but in terms of what he achieved on the pitch, he is highly regarded in terms of his stats because he lasted so long not because he had a great season!

No because he wasn't one of the best players in his position in the PL.
He is a long time employee thats it.

That's a fair point...I worked at Sainsburys for a few years while a student. I don't think the staff or customers talk about me ever. It's disappointing as I was fucking good at shelf stacking.

Not a legend for me, but I do hold some fond memories of his goals (the wigan 9-1 game in particular)

Only one Spurs legend in the last decade or so - and that's Ledley King for me.

Defoe certainly deserves more respect than he gets though. A very good servant for this Club at the end of the day but 'Legend' gets used far too loosely IMO.

He was largely a substitute at Spurs so can't be a Legend but he did stay a long time.

Great guy too
