Is it important we buy in January?

So the next transfer window is less than two weeks away and naturally lots of generic threads with "I'd by these 5 players and sell these 5 players" appear. In reality though we are never going to complete ten transfers in January.

We have a very strong squad and aren't really lacking in any area. However, we are entering the transfer market in potentially our strongest position since the Prem began.

We have three experienced keepers so no need to buy there. We have several full backs on either side and Walker and BAE are becoming ever presents so buying a full back is out.

In central defence we have King, Kaboul, Gallas, Dawson and Bassong. With a couple of injuries already in this position and King as a ticking timebomb we could be looking to strengthen here. It's not easy to buy in January and the mot obvious target is Cahill. His contract is running out but would he be a stopgap or is he a natural partner to Kaboul?

In central midfield there's barely a place for Sandro or Huddlestone but out wide our backup is the slower and less natural widemen Pienaar and Krancjar.

Upfront we have Adebayor, Defoe and Pav as our natural strikers and VDV and Krancjar able to play behind.

We're playing great football with our fast wingmen pinning back the opposition so should we be looking at backup with similar attributes or are Piennar and Krancjar good enough to cover Bale and Lennon? Should we be looking at a harder working upgrade on Pav or should we only be looking at genuine top quality?

Do we only buy a player who'll command a first team place or do we still need to be looking at improving the squad?

Need a ST, Versatile Winger, and maybe a CB in January.

We buy players who will bring added quality to the squad, whether that is a player who comes into the first team immediately or plays his way into the team is a different story.

A lot depends on Lennon's injury imo. If he's out for a lengthy spell then I think a pacey winger would be important, if not then just a few squad additions please.

An Adebayor-like striker is necessary. One injury to him and we are doomed.

A RWF would be ideal, since Gio is clearly not going to make it and none of our wingers are suited for the right. Even better would be a RWF who can help us win and keep possession more regularly than Lennon does (as he doesn't touch the ball much), as that would put less pressure on the CF to drop back and help in possession. Few CFs touch the ball as much as Adebayor atm.

Leandro and Cahill would be my two picks. maybe a winger if lennons injury is bad.

Not vital but if we want to cotinue the way we are we need 1 or 2 more. We need to clear the likes of Gio, Gomes and Pinny imo. Even if it is low fees at least it clear somes wages.

Bring in a pacey winger who can play right and left. Once we have that we can then decide what to do about a striker, personally if Leandro won't come in January I say we keep hold of Defoe and Pav and then wait until the summer so we have more time to scout for a potential lone striker. Obviously Adebayor should be a priority to be sorted out as well.

As for centre back, I think we are ok if we can get Dawson back but if we get a sensible bid for Bassong, which I feel we might then we would need to either bring in a loan until Caulker returns in the summer or bring in an experienced player who has the chance to break into the first team. I think we are ok if Bassong stays though;

King
Dawson
Gallas
Kaboul
Bassong

With Caulker returning next season to hopefully push for a first team spot.

I guess we need to start looking for a goalkeeper too, I would say Brad will have one more season left, I think it would be beneficial to bring a young keeper in soon, get them to learn from Brad and Cudicini.

gomes will leave, so that only leaves us with 2 keepers. alwnick can do one. He is poor. We def need a winger with pace to cover both flanks. Striker when pav goes.

We need:

An Adebayor clone. Sell Pav to make room
A Lennon clone. Sell Giovani to make room
To scout for goalkeepers for the summer. A World Class no1 in his prime plus a potential world class keeper as back up

if the only deal is to sign adebayor on a permanent deal then i would be happy.

i see january as a selling window with gds bassong and pav probably being sold.

i agree priorities may change if lennon injury relates to two to three months then a pacy wide man would be needed.

still think if we buy anyone it will be cahill in bassong out and gallas gone in the summer.
leaving king dawson kaboul and cahill with caulker as cover.

German No 1 adler is into last 6 months of his contract and can talk to clubs abroad from jan(with view to the summer). Hoilett is also into last 6 months & could be a good option if lennons out for ages. Adebayor cover and that's about it.

Not overly important, no.

We could use cover for Adebayor, but everything else has cover.

But, I think there is such a drop off in terms of some of the cover we have.

Bale/Lennon....the back ups we have for them make us play so differently and they somewhat take away with our ability to get at teams. I think its something we're lacking.

Then perhaps we should never have bought Pienaar and should've sold Kranjcar. Because if they can't cover, then there's no point in having them.

I think if we have BOTH Bale and Lennon out, it could be an issue, but if one of them plays, I'm not all that concerned.

Apparently, we may be loaning Pienaar back to Everton in January.

I like him as a player. He gives us a different dynamic as a player but I'd like to see a player brought in who has the same sort of game as Bale & Lennon. Lots of pace, getting down the line, a real handful to deal with.

It is important to buy, as it gives the squad a new aura.

If they are top players it will keep the good feeling going throughout the squad.

-Gomes out, dont think we need cover brought in until the end of the season, Adler would be nice obviously

-Pav out if we can get in decent cover

-Gio out finally, would be nice to get in a quick winger to cover the right

1. If Pav goes, then suitable Ade-esque back-up. Leandro please.

2. If Bassong goes, then CB back-up.

3. Back-up for Lennon, as Harry doesn't seem to want to use anyone but Rafa on the right.

4. I would rather Gomes not go until the summer. If he does, I reckon it might be a good idea to get another Brazilian (see 1.) to keep Sandro happy (it seems to be a big deal around here that he has another Brazilian around) and keeping back-up (if even just on loan).

5. Gio to leave, as I see Kranjcar as the Rafa back-up.
