If Corluka is allowed to leave we need a right back. Which would be pretty annoying since Naughton looks a solid premiership player.

Townsend has the raw attributes to work as a short term solution. I don't think we need a wide player.

A striker to replace Pav seems the most likely I guess. But we don't really need to buy. Which is a nice feeling.

I don't think I've ever trusted a manager's judgement of players as much as I do with Harry. Freidel and Parker being the two that really won my complete faith. Whoever Harry decides to bring in, I will support 100%.

As t79boy, Riandor and $hogun have said, squad development never stands still: always look to improve. We should seize the chance if it comes along.

Bear in mind the club-trained and association-trained squad requirements. We should look to reinforce the senior squad and also bring in youth for development.

In the latter case, I would take a serious look at Nathan Redmond at Brum. If he’s amenable, and we can use the Chrissie Hughton connection, I would spend a few million. At 17, he requires further polishing but he’s not far off. An ideal replacement for Lennon and English to boot.

In the absence of a DoF, we must ensure youth development is not sidelined. I can’t see anyone coming through the current crop apart from Iago Falque (if he stays) and Tom Carroll (if he bulks up). I don’t know enough about Coulibaly.

But more than just squad improvement all round, there are specific positions requiring serious attention. We should be looking out for a goalkeeper or two, come what may. Right now, we’ve got two GKs whose careers will soon draw to a close, and a crazy GK who cannot stop making mistakes. Good strikers are always desirable: one mature and one hopeful. Ade will go at the end of the season and, if we can move Pav in January then we should do so should a replacement be found. Maybe even Defoe could go if we could get a good price and guarantee a better, younger replacement. A left-back is also desirable if the coaching staff don’t think Rose is good enough.

Most of all, however, we need central defensive reinforcements, and we should push the boat out. It’s not either Samba or Cahill – it’s both. Or at least two defenders who can do a proper job. We should kick ourselves if we missed the chance now. King could break down tomorrow and never come back. Gallas is at the end of his career and injury-prone. Kaboul is definitely not on fire. Indeed he remains as error-prone as ever. Maybe not as much as before, but still too often (having been responsible for about five goals conceded so far this season). Dawson, Dawson, Dawson. I don’t know. He has his faults, that’s the problem, not least of which is that he can’t play on the left, doesn’t have pace and is too easily turned. Yes, he’s a squad player, but is he really a first-choice if we can get better? And shouldn’t we be aiming for much better? Bassong certainly ain’t good enough. Corluka can’t cover and nor can Huddlestone.

The only positive glimmers are Caulker and Livermore. Will Caulker make it? We don’t know. Is Livermore good enough at CB? We don’t know. If our staff are confident that one of them stands a chance, then let’s get just one centre half this window. But don’t baulk on price.

Do it.

Anybody know what Adam Johnson is on a week? I think we should try a bid for him.

This kid sounds great, get him here in Jan, see how he goes for half a season, send him back on loan to brum next season if he's still too raw

All well and good, I take your opinion on board (dont agree though), but if we are to do this we need to sell dawson/kaboul and bassong NOW too. No point having 8 CBs on the books

BOTH Cahill and Samba ? I'd take neither of them. Don't think either are better than Kaboul or Dawson, both of whom are completely settled at the club, with Kaboul having room to improve even further.

Kaboul and King. With Gallas ready to step in, Dawson returning soon and Bassong there right now as a fourth choice ( 5th when Dawson comes back ). It would be complete madness to rock the CB boat so vigourously. Your talking about bringing in two and moving on at least 3.

As far as I am concerned, Caulker need not prove anything more in terms of having a 'role' at the club. He's played very well in the PL this season, and the Swansea fans rave about him. He's at least already good enough to be 4th choice for us, and he's only 19. We can bank on the fact that he is already good enough to be squad for us, and will most likely go on to be so much more.

I say we buy no one in January at CB and run with what we have. Then in summer, we move on Bassong, phase out Gallas and buy Vertonghen.

King
Vertonghen
Kaboul
Dawson

is a strong quartet. Send Caulker back out on a 6 month loan, so he can come back mid season if we need him.

Vertonghen is an interesting target. One of his main draws is his versatility to play at centre half, left back or even to slot in as a defensive midfielder. The latter arguably being the position he is best suited to. I rate him quite highly but I'm not convinced he's particularly suited to the premiership seeing as he's not very strong or dominant in the air.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up at Man City, though - Mancini may be tempted to develop the Vertonghen/Kompany partnership.

Strongly agree!

Exactly what we need.

Rotate him with Lennon and we can get the best out of both of them.

Would be difficult to juggle but the way I see it, when we lose Bale and Lennon (a la Sunderland game), we struggle without pacey players.

Johnson is an absolute top quality player - would be great addition.

Alas, I would be highly surprised if City sold him to us.

Yes, you're right. There is the very real problem of how to change the guard. But I believe we should be planning to upgrade our central defensive personnel. Get that right, stop leaking soft goals and we stand a chance of staying in the top four.

You're post is well thought out - except for one thing.

King.

I have to put my Spurs sentiment and love for our greatest home-grown player and adopt a hard-headed approach. Ledley plus four others, yes, when the four represent the future. But not Ledley as part of the four. Far too risky, since he's an injury away from the end of his career.

On reflection, I'd go for either Cahill or Samba but not both as they seem to be right-sided central defenders. Cahill has the edge because he's English and helps with the squad rules. Cahill is also a bargain and surely better than Kaboul or Dawson on the right side of central defence. It would mean letting one of them go at the end of the season, and working out what to do with Gallas.

Of course, Cahill is in demand. Arnesal will pay better wages if they want him.

Caulker may or may not make the grade. He's not had many PL games this season. He's promising, yes, and the Swansea fans like him. But all depends on his form for the rest of the season. He's also right-sided.

The problem is the left side of central defence. How versatile are Cahill and Samba? That might be a clincher.

Bassong is not good enough. Agreed. If Vertonghen is available and good enough, then go for him.

But we should also be thinking of another left-sided (or more versatile) central defender. Perhaps Livermore can do it.

On rocking the central defensive boat. It's been rocking a lot in the last three seasons, with injuries to King, Woodgate and Dawson, the departure and return of Kaboul, the arrival of Gallas, and the side-lining of Bassong. We need stability, yes, but that's not likely unless we build for the future.

i watched the blackburn bolton game last night and Hoillett stood out massively for me - lightning quick, can play on either flank, has a trick and is available - definately think we should be taking a look at him as back up to Lennon and Bale/1 for the future

Hoilett is a definate target for us. Quality little player who can provide cover for both Lennon and Bale. His contract expires next summer too!

Moussa Dembele would be ideal up top for me.

Hoilett 5M, Dembele 10-12M. That's it. Sell Pienaar, Corluka and Pav.

re defenders- id like to move on Bassong and bring in Cahill. I think at the end of this season Gallas will move on so that will leave us with King, Dawson, Kaboul, Cahill and Caulker.

Marco Reus is the player we need, can play on the wing or upfront, not yet in the Goetze superstar category so is achievable and is currently better than Marko Marin.

Pretty sure he signed it a month or so ago. He would of been a fantastic signing for us.
