Good PR and a public statement of unavailability.
If we are trying to sign a CB that teams interested in Verts could also be interested in, then a statement of unavailability could push them to rivals us for them. The good PR will happen whenever its announced and right now it's not needed, but say we were unsuccessful in signing a CB, then good PR of our best CB signing a new contract would be beneficial.

Agreed, I don't see the sense in announcing him later at all. As the window gets closer to shutting it makes him even more of a target for others.
Which, if he has signed a new contract and is committed to staying (which recent quotes suggest) is a good thing considering we are also looking for a CB as those teams are less likely to rival us if they think there is a chance they can get a choice higher up on their list.

Think this too. In terms of PR signing someone then closely following it with Vert contract announcement would be far better than announcing now and no signing for a week or so.

Good PR and a public statement of unavailability ?
Or we could distract other top clubs who think he's available away from the CB's (like Musacchio) who we want to sign.

We also delay the announcements for new signings as well all the time, so this is really nothing new.

The sanity of every Spurs fan worldwide..;)
No contract or signing could every make Spurs fans sane. For 20 mins after the contract is announced 90% of fans would be happy then back to moaning about whatever the current grumble is and the other 10% would ask why we have given him a new contract as he is so over rated and we should sell him and buy Shawcross.

One I thing I know is Levy doesn't do anything unless it benefits him or us and if he doesn't see the benefit of announcing it now (or see's more or a benefit to announcing it later), he wont.

Or it's not been signed ?
