None of the top teams we're looking for a keeper when we got Lloris, plus Marseille we're in financial difficulty and needed to sell. Vertonghen granted was a decent buy but from Ajax which is a club that I would rate below us. Likewise for Eriksen, plus no one dared take a chance on him, lots of clubs thinking about it but wouldnt take the gamble. Lamela was bought due to Baldini's links to Roma, do you honestly think we would have bought him if Baldini didn't come in? Plus we paid well over the odds for him imo.
Who was the last player that we bought from a club who are our equal or better?
Before you say Ajax are our equal, think about what league they play in and how much they pay their players! All good players leave Holland!

Well Lloris came from Lyon, so I'll take your judgement on that deal as...sketchy to say the least.

Eriksen was scouted by everyone. We were the only club to take the plunge. Says more about good judgement than Eriksen.

Jan had lots of suitors too. Clubs above us wanted him.

Lamela wasn't overpriced. 30m for a 21 year old with limitless potential. Liverpool bought a 26 year old with one good season under his belt, thats overpaying.

Berbatov came from champions league regulars Leverkusen 8 years ago.

Fact is, we may not have signed these players from clubs much bigger than us, but we did beat others better than us looking st them...

So about the player then. What motivation does he have to come to us?

To work with the German legend that is Stefan Freund obviously.

I also expect Gotze, Lahm, Muller and Hummels to arrive at WHL this season for exactly the same reason.:sneaky:

Do you really think no one was in for Eriksen at 12 mil?
It's not always the most prestigious club or the club with the biggest cheque book who wins.
I know a lot of clubs were looking at him, but no one was willing to take the risk of paying 12mil! We however were willing to take the risk after missing out on Willian. The fact is that no one else was willing to pay the 12 mil hence we were the only team in for him, being his only way out of Ajax without having to stay another 6 months!

We had the Bale money last summer, the only reason we got in Lamela. We only spend what we get from player sales these days.
I cant believe that our supporters still think we're capable of signing players like draxler! The days of Klinnsman signing are gone. Until we are financially sound ie sugar daddy or new stadium we are not going to get the top players.
We need to accept that we need to take a chance on those with potential and hope they blossom!

Yep spot on.

We might get lucky like we did with VDV, but it certainly won't happen very often.

Must have missed lloris, vertonghen, eriksen and Lamela. Oops.

Obviously all the players you mention are talented. There is a pattern with all them players though. Each one of them players were brought in after one of our best players was sold. Modric and Bale. Which meant we had big money to spend. Of course there is the other argument that the fans would have hunted Levy down if he didn't at least get in some biggish names.

Unless we sell for some big money we won't have a chance of getting anyone like Draxler.

They always say shirt sales alone pay for player purchases. In this case one shirt with his name on it ensures a profit.
Funny one! On a serious note, in 2011 and 2012, income from merchandising was less than 10M (accounts for 2013 don't specify this number). So how shirt sales can pay for anything I don't know.

I think if he's not playing for Schalke he's not playing in the Bundesliga.

Doh...I meant he is a cert for Bayern Munich in the future dude. They wont let a non German club buy him unless its Barca or Real and they offer big money.

I think he was referring to Draxler's loyalty to Schalke. He will leave Schalke eventually but not to go to another German club.

You're all getting in a tizzy, he made one substitute appearance for Germany in the WC.

To put it in perspective, what would lamela have done if he was fit for Argentina?
