Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp says Ledley King will be disciplined by the club for being drunk during the early hours of last Sunday. The 28-year-old defender was also arrested and questioned on suspicion of assaulting a man in Soho, London.
King has been bailed by police until mid-July while inquiries continue into the incident.
The England player has since apologised and said the evening was "a night out with friends which went too far".
Redknapp did not reveal what the punishment would be but he did state that King would be in the team for the home match against Manchester City on Saturday.

"Ledley will play tomorrow - he has apologised," said the Spurs manager, who is set to ban his players from drinking alcohol.
"He knows he was wrong. He made a mistake and he has to learn from that and make sure it doesn't happen again. I've had a good chat with him.
"There is no problem with people having the occasional drink, but if you have to get drunk you shouldn't be drinking.
"I don't want players going to nightclubs and misbehaving. The problems nearly always come when players get drunk."
Redknapp believes that it is up to footballers to be role models for the youth of Britain.

You've only got to go abroad in the summer to certain parts of the world, you see drunken kids laying around, acting like maniacs, causing problems and it's a problem we've had in this country for years now

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp

"You've only got to go abroad in the summer to certain parts of the world, you see drunken kids laying around, acting like maniacs, causing problems and it's a problem we've had in this country for years now," added Redknapp.
"There's too much of it and I think footballers should set an example.
"I don't understand why they get drunk. You can't even get a slice of white bread in the canteen here. Everything here is geared up to healthy eating.
"What's the point if then they are going to drink 10 pints of lager. I don't see why they have to get on the booze, especially footballers."
Apart from the ban on alcohol, Redknapp is also considering barring them from entering nightclubs.
"Of course, why not? I don't want them going out to nightclubs, " he said.
"I can ban them, we can do what we want. We're paying them massive money. They have a fantastic job coming here every day to train to be super-fit, to be top of their profession for a few years.
"They have the opportunity to earn money so they don't have to work again for the rest of their lives. So why can't they dedicate themselves to it?"

I think Redknapp has handled this whole situation very well.

i'm loving harry more and more now.

i don't want to start a massive alcohol debate. here are just some of my views:

gazza said 'dont take away their chance to relax'

well gazza, nutter legend as you are, boozing isn't the only way to relax, especially if you are a multi-millionaire...

and secondly: drinking is really not that great and drinking 'in moderation' is just a bit of an excuse for those who don't have the self-discipline to not drink.

not that i'm taking a dig at those who do drink, but sometimes stuff like... hm... i dunno, being a premiership footballer demands it. if your lifestyle doesn't demand it and your care about health only goes so far, then so be it otherwise.

absolutely loving this.

Good. Ledders is the only person I can condone drinking because he is above the law for what he has given the club.

I do think we need a new Captain. And no one in our current squad. We need to sign a Barry and soon.

All players should be treated the same regardless of who they are or what they achieved at any one club.

When I first heard about Ledley I gave him a roasting (on sc) but now that some time has passed on it and I've kind of looked at the big picture there are worse players out there that do shit on the pitch that could be looked at as 10x worse than what he has done. Ronaldo for instance goes around kicking player when the ref ain't looking and his actions when he was subbed in the last game is typical of him. What kind of role model is that? Then you got Vidic that thinks using his elbow to tackle players in the face is how the game has to be played, Drogba thinks he's playing on an olyimpic swimming pool, the list goes on week in week out. I do think that Ledley needs some serious punishment as he needs to know no matter how valuable you are to a team there's always a replacement. I do believe that he is sorry for what happened and very embarrassed. We all make mistakes and even the same ones more than once, as much as he has gone down in my eyes he'll soon bounce back

Barry being the captain that was stripped of the captaincy and booed by his own fans, because he railed against his manager for refusing to sell him at a price that suited Liverpool.

Not the best example of a captain that is needed.

well it's good common sense has prevailed and Harry has stopped talking about a total ban - which I and many others were against - well done Harry

Wilson will need to spend some more time here before he can be considered (perhaps after next season), and from what I've heard he's a quiet lad though I think he has plenty of leadership qualities. I'd like to relieve Keano of captain duties since I think he's trying too hard to be like a captain when he should focus on playing like a striker and scoring goals first.

I still think very highly of Ledley and as much as I dislike his drunken antics, there are so many footballers out there that get caught with prozzies and orgies and cheating and other drunken antics (bendtner not so long ago) and they're still worshipped, plus Ledley is an absolute gentleman on the pitch, which not all footballers can claim. We all make mistakes from time to time (I've definitely done worse when shitfaced, and I don't have a drinking problem like people are saying Ledley has) so I can't ask for him to be a perfect role model all the time or else he wouldn't be human. He has been very professional on the pitch for us this season and I hope the club helps him either quit or take care to drink responsibly.

I don't think anyone truly thought that Harry would drop King.

Especially with Dawson injured at present and in general it would just have been a stupid move and Harry cuting off his nose to spite his face.

He'd have had to disrupt a very solid and good back four by then recalling Hutton who's a bit hot and cold at the moment and shift Corkula into the middle where he was slightly iffyer a few games back.
