What you can't deny with Keane is that he knew exactly what it took to be a serial winner. If walker had that ingame mentality he would have been the best RB in the world.
he's still the best English RB of his generation. Only Neville and Johnson have more caps at RB and Walker will overtake Johnson before he's done.

and btw, Keane - the joint record holder for red cards - really isnt in a position to be calling another footballer an idiot.

I'd say Walker is among the most underrated english players of the last 5-6 years. Strange to see the amount of stick he gets.

Total moron off the pitch, mind.

It’sa stage one, I think that because of his athleticism and occasional brain fart, an assumption is made that he’s not a very technically proficient or intelligent footballer.

And yet he’s been a mainstay in arguably the best side this league has seen under a manager who put more emphasis on ball comfort and game intelligence than any other on the planet.

I personally think that he was the best right back on earth for about half a decade and that even now he’s in the top few.

Judging intelligence by the number of red cards is one of the worst systems I can think of.

Depends. Trying to end another footballer’s career isn’t the most intelligent thing to do, especially as it was pre planned and he’d no doubt have been aware of the backlash it would’ve brought. Throwing the ball at Shearer’s head for a red wasn’t the most intelligent thing to do either.

Your average hot headed red card tackle i agree, you can’t relate that to intelligence as a whole. But he’s made some really stupid decisions in his life, on and off the field.

I enjoy him as a pundit purely for the abuse he gives out. It’s different to other ‘by the book’ pundits. But if you actually listen to what he has to say about the game, he really doesn’t offer that much insight. Amazing player, average pundit bar the funny abusive shit.

I would say that is nasty rather than unintelligent.

Can it not be both? I see people who are both nasty and stupid everywhere in the stands each match, and when I worked in criminal defence I can assure you that the vast majority of people I encountered were also both those things.

As for Keane, I don’t think he’s unintelligent per se, I just don’t think he’s particularly bright either, but this could describe the majority of UK and Eire reared footballers. I think Keane probably gets more credit than he deserves because he is forthright and confident, and has an Irish accent which apparently makes even the most loutish and basic of people seem like the second coming of Yeats.

Bit of both I reckon. Nasty **** for doing it, thick **** for not thinking about the aftermath. He’s done that kind of thing his whole career. Walking out on Ireland, giving that interview on Man Utd TV where he slagged off his own players and ripped into Ferdinand, slagging off his own fans (prawn sandwich brigade) to name but a few. He doesn’t put too much thought into what he does as a whole and the shit that follows.

Still enjoy him though.

Of course it can.

I have met plenty of people who are perfectly nice, but also stupid.

Thing is, there wasn't much of an aftermath as he kept it quiet for years. If he'd admitted it at the time he'd have got a hefty punishment during his prime.

Walking out on Ireland, slagging off his players etc are probably not the best moves but in other ways they were. Nothing to do with intelligence though.

I dunno man. His only chance to play in a World Cup and he fucked it. That’s a dumb move. And slagging off his players directly led to him being forced out of Utd. That’s pretty dumb too. He doesn’t think/care about a lot of the things he does. And he did get backlash when he released the book and admitted it. But anyway, the challenge was obvious to everyone that it was revenge for what Haaland did to Keane previously, so it didn’t even need to be said.

Wether it’s lack of intelligence or just plain evil (it’s a mixture of both IMO) there’s no doubt he’s fucked up a lot in his life. He gets away with it now because he was also a winner in his day, It just needs someone with the balls to bring this up in front of him on Super Sunday and we’ll have some fantastic viewing.

Lots of people do things that will not benefit them, it doesn't make them unintelligent. Keane was obsessed with winning and wanted things done the right way. He hated that the Irish were seen as a joke. He had conversation with Mccarthy saying he wanted them to prepare and be the ultimate professionals in terms of diet and match preparation. Mccarthy was in agreement. Then on getting there it was amateur hour again so he left.

Some people will see this as taking a stand, others as being short-sighted, some him being a control freak. But people taking a stand is not connected to intelligence.

A lot of people fuck up their entire lives. It can come down to mentality and numerous other issues.

All I have said is he is not unintelligent in the big scheme of things. I don't feel I have to defend his every move just because I don't think him getting a lot of red cards is down to his intelligence.

Horrible twat of a player.
Seems to be a horrible twat of a bloke too.

But when I think of 'Winner', I think of him. Would not accept less than 100% every game and i think it kills him seeing professionals not showing that desire.

Part of me wishes we'd bought him from Forrest,. I think he'd have gone mental living with the Spurs mentality and ways of doing business of the 90s.

Was a Spurs fan too, Hoddle was his idol.

Imagine if we’d signed Bergkamp and Keane at the times of their moves. Them in the same side as Sheringham, Anderton and Judas and we’d have had so much more about us, even with the dross we were carrying in other parts of the pitch.
