This whole thread is seriously lacking in balance from both sides of the debate.

The talent is there but he hasn't shown it in a Spurs shirt yet (cue that EL gif). He needs a few games in a row to a have a chance to find his place in the team.

The thread isn't helped though by people insisting he had a good game yesterday. Be honest with yourself and admit he was far short of what we need him to be (balance time; he was not the only one) and big improvement is needed.

He'll improve and should start at home, but man, he was awful yesterday - really sloppy and not at all aware of what was going on around him. That's one thing Holtby does have over him at this stage.

I also think Eriksen looks like he might take a while to settle into things again. Hopefully when he does, he and Lamela will be on the same wavelength.

I didn't mind that Lamela went for a few diagonal passes from deep. They were hit with nice weight and weren't all that far from the mark. Look at a team like Barca, play through balls all day long and most of them don't work. Its the first game of the season for a player coming off a season hit by injury. I think he did ok.

I thought he did ok too. Thought he was one of the better ones in terms of pressing. Still think he'll be a worldy within the next few seasons. And I said the same about bale when he was getting stick too so there. ;)

As ignorant as it is to say "Lamela isn't good enough" it is equally as bizarre to call him a superstar. For me, as I have said already, the jury is open.

I will start by saying that Lamela needs a run of games. I will also add that I think Townsend, based on his form pre-injury last season, England form and his pre-season form was unlucky, very unlucky, not to start (not over Lamela though, but Lennon IMO.)

On Lamela, though, I will add one thing. I cannot help but think we really want the lad to be special. Let me explain. He plays in the shirt, so yes, that is obvious, we want everyone that wears the Lilly White to be "special". With Lamela, though, it is a different special. He not only is our record signing, so we want him to be great for that reason, but he is wearing the number 11 shirt - that vacated by arguably the best player to ever wear the Spurs shirt in Bale (Id argue Gazza was better, but that can be left for another day!)

So, for me, and let me add I go home and away each week to watch the team (not that this makes me any more of a better judge I might add), Lamela has yet to show me anything, really, of note that highlights any "specialness". Yes, he has the drop of the shoulder and at times plays the odd cute pass, but all too often he picks the wrong ball, lacks pace, cuts in when he plays on the right, drifts in when he plays on the left, misplaced passes, shots from distance, the easy ball when the shot is on, doesn't seem to be a player that wants skip past two and whip in a cross or shoot from 30 yards.

I hold my hands up, he may be special - but not yet. I will finish as I started - he needs a run of games, but I cannot help but think that all I read on here, the site that cannot be named and in the stands about this "special" player, well at the moment I think it is much of hope and optimism rather than anything being demonstrated. Has he done anything different to Rose or Dawson? Both of them are regarded as far from special. I might add one was arguably our best player today and the other has been at the club for 10 years...

Now over to you for the negative comments, I'm talking rubbish etc etc.

See, I disagree with the content tbh, but this is how all the haters should phrase it.

Instead of just saying "he's shite, too weak etc..", I'd read something like this and be fine with it because 1) It's explained, and not derogatory, and 2) A forum wouldn't be a forum without differing views.

The little negative posts really piss me off.

Anyway, re Lamela I though he was decent. He would have done much better when WH went down to ten, and if there is any game where you would expect flair players to underperform, this would be it tbh. Nothing to worry about.

Also, to all of you stating that Lamela has done NOTHING, NOTHING to prove he has potential in a Spurs shirt, may I lead you to this (y) :

He clearly has great ball control and flair, but he isn't imposing himself on games yet. I think it'll be pretty much the same until the second half of the season.

He didn't play like he did in pre season but it just looked to me like he was trying too hard to force openings. The guy is clearly desperate to make an impact and do well for us so I think he just needs support and an arm around the shoulder from Poch who should tell him to calm down a little and play simple passes untill he get's used to the the tempo of the Premiership.

The biggest problem (and it's OUR problem, not his) is the ever looming 30 million price tag, for that much money we want an instant superstar, a player that can take the whole of West Ham on his own and still win comfortably - but the truth is, Lamela is not that player.......yet!

The take away from yesterday's performance is this; yes, he made some poor decisions, yes, his passing and vision wasn't great, and yes, he didn't make the impact we wanted him to, BUT he kept trying, the lad is well up for the challenge, he doesn't shy away from the ball and he really seems like he wants to prove himself - personally that'll do for me right now.

The less pressure we put on him (and the rest of the team for that matter) and just keep singing their names, I honestly believe we're gonna see something special this season :)

No the biggest problem is that he's trying to hard and ignores the simple passes.

Play it simple and then do the clever stuff when you're more confident.

Yesterday he was trying flicks and tricks and losing possession when the clever thing was a simple ball to a player in space.

Time will tell if he has a footballing brain or not, at present it doesn't look like it based on how he's playing.

Poch should have a word with him and get him playing it simple first.

I'm convinced he should be sold now, cut losses. If he goes onto to be a superstar, I'll hold my hands up, but I'm not too worried.

Did his performance in an away game, for which we were down to 10 men for 60mins, in a new managers first competitive game convince you of this?
