That is, in my opinion, our strongest XI. I'm sure there will be a few who would put Walker at right back, although God knows why. So Walker/Naughton at right back, the rest are pretty much nailed on.
How many times this season has Villas Boas been able to pick this team? Or even pick close to this team? Zero times? Yes, zero times. It is nearly December and not once in 19 games has AVB had the opportunity to put out his strongest side.
And, although we've lost three world class players in King, Modric and van der Vaart, we've also lost very good squad players in Corluka, Pienaar and Kranjcar. While they wouldn't have made it into most of our best XI selections, Corluka would've been a much better option at RB than Walker so far this season and Pienaar and Kranjcar, while they may not be oceans ahead of Dempsey and Sigurdsson ability-wise, were already familiar with the club, knew their team mates well and would've performed a hell of a lot better in these first few months than the two players they've been replaced with.
None of that was the manager's fault. He's also having to coach work ethic and tactics into a squad of players who spent a few years under Redknapp with a philosophy pretty much consisting of letting the players play their own way.
Give the man time, FFS. At least let him pick his strongest team a few times before you start bringing out the pitchforks.

Man I wish people would stop whining about what Redknapp would have done. Criticise AVB all you want (although I don't think he did much wrong from a tactical point of view yesterday), but please stop comparing him to HR. He's gone, he ain't coming back, get over it.

Also, I just don't understand the mentality of wanting someone in charge who was so disinterested in being our manager that they spent half of last season flirting with another job (which resulted in them presiding over one of the worst drop offs in premier league history btw) only to suddenly start contradicting themselves and trying to negotiate a pay rise when the realised the new job was going to someone else.

Personally I'd rather have AVB in the job even if he is less successful, he seems like he wants to be our manager, he's clearly desperate to succeed, he has a lot of passion and I think if some of the dopes on the terraces got behind him and the players rather than picking irrational holes in every little decision then we'd have a good chance of success.

Couldn't agree more, I mean do we all come on here and say 'what about if we still had Gazza. Lineker, Waddle, Hoddle and the likes'? 'what would they have done'? Harry is part of the history of the club which has now, like the others I have stated, moved on...get behind what we have and try to help the side progress up the table.

Maybe it just came off as more people in the last few pages of this thread.

Also, I don't really see that AVB has made a 'shit load of errors' so far - he's definitely made mistakes but I think generally we as Spurs fans just have to accept that we don't have a particularly great squad at the moment.

If you take 5 or 6 players out of our squad (Dembele, Bale, Ade, Vertonghen, Lloris, Sandro etc.) then what's left would be a mid - lower table squad to be honest. The rest of the players are either older and prone to injury, inconsistent or decidedly mediocre.

Guess I'm just expecting a Coach (which is something that some always wanted, someone to coach) to have made a better job at getting players to work harder at least even if his ideas are taking a while to come through.

At the moment it looks like we are trying to over complicate things, treating football as a science rather than the 90 minute game that it is.

Because the other option is Naughton. That's why.

I've got to say, how people expect our attack to look fluid with Dempsey in the number 10 role is beyond me.

Lloris is quicker off the line, although not that much quicker. As for 'braver', you're talking out of your arse, a not infrequent occurrence.

What low expectations you have! We should be romping this group. But hey, enjoy Europe while it lasts. It may be some while before you get the chance again.
Fine, get personal if it turns you on pal.
Lloris made more 'brave' saves last night than Brad has made in two seasons.
I'm not sure I can make a judgment on how quick Brad is as there is insufficient evidence.

Spurs are difficult to 'enjoy' at the moment in any context and whatever expectations I may have
does not actually affect the performance or achievements of the team.
But I am pleased we are in with a good chance of going through for reasons of pride
and because it may give the team greater confidence.

We could easily make the Europa places this year and my expectations
are clearly higher than yours in this respect.

You think what Spurs produced tonight was as good as what they produced in Milan i suppose. Not a single fricking shot on goal that would worry a Conference level keeper, not one single shot in ninety minutes.

other than a perfectly good goal

o realise this was a very

I think youre being way over the top. i may be high on morphone andunder a fair few other drugs but you have to realise this was a very tough team in a tough atmosphere on a tiny and shit pitch which werent used to and isnt conducive to our passing game. it was also a massive test for a very young team. caulker, walker naughton and siggy. it wasnt pretty but i think all in all they did well. well done spurs.

I know it was a tough team and atmos with a crap pitch but what did there keeper have to do? nothing apart from that suprise "shot" from Bale. Walker and Siggy are experiended enough, as are Ade, Bale and Clint that offered naff all. Sugar coat as you like but bottom line we were crap in attack.

Im not sugar coating anything. it was a good result in the end, but ppl are instead moaning as if we had lost at home to wigan. all things considered this result gives us a great pltform to progress. maybe we rode our luck but we also kept a clean sheet and should have had six points over both legs.

anyway its done now and hopefully the team (esp the young back four) are learning and so is avb. I have been much more dissapointed with other results this season.

Yeah fine but putting the good point and clean sheet aside for a minute we offered nothing going forward and cant even string a few passes together at the moment. These are pros and should at least be able to do that.

I just think your picking the wrong game and circumstances to highlight this. im trying to be objective and as the most recent game played i can,see why people arent happt we didnt produce a sparkling performance, but lets at least put that into perspective and use more obvious situations as a yard stick.

Well we also created dick all at HOME to Wigan so hows that? Better? No way was i expecting sparkling but stringing passes together and actually getting into the box a few times is the least we expect.

No of course wigan was poor. but you had maribor and the first 20 against arsenal after that. which showed improvement.

Not good enough for us!
I disagree, I think the performances listed were plenty good enough, they were top 4, CL, trophy winning type of performances.

I am still so mad at Ade that AVb finally got it right re a team, and then he did THAT to him, though I accept it was heat of the moment etc, but still it was and is so frustrating.

So your happy with our only decent showings recently being Maribor at home and 20 mins at the Emirates?
