As much as I hate Chelsea I wish Roman would stand his ground and let Costa rot. Even if he doesn't wanna return to the club, simply don't let him sign for another club until his contract runs out. He's a nasty little shit on and off the pitch, poison to the game.
Totally can't stand the guy and this is no way to get a move but if it's true that conte sacked him by text (and costa claims to have the text on his phone still) then that's pretty lame. That said, what costa is doing is definitely pathetic.

Apart from another divorce for Abramovich being on the horizon, why is it that they are trying to be a bit more prudent in their spending these days? Why is it that they are still so short of bodies this late in the transfer window?

Possibly because Conte believes he can actually coach the players he has, unlike Pep & Jose who need to buy in order to paper over the cracks in their own abilities.

The stadium build has been said to require funding as well

Less one dickhead manager out of the league will be all welcoming for me...
We might see the back of Conte, but it probably won't take Tuchel (or whoever else gets the gig) to become a dickhead, if he isn't already one. As I've said before, it only takes a year or two at Stamford Bridge to turn someone into a fully-fledged prick.
