If these deals have taught us anything it is we need to stop being the smallest big fish and be the shark in the next pool down.

Leipzig & Dortmund do this brilliantly and I think we will have a lot more success doing that at the moment.

Diaz would have been superb as would Traore and Vlahovic IMO (not expecting them all). But everyone has been taken by a more appealing club than us.
This is an excellent point tbf, maybe together as a club we need to implement a philosophy in the market such as Ajax, Borussia and stick with it. At least if the club are honest about where they are, what they can get and want, then fans are less likely to go into uproar because it would be clear on what we're trying to do, and expectations will be reasonable. And like you said it could work out really well.
Instead of going for the Elite level players and failing to get them, embarassing ourselves in the process. Yeah it shows ambition, but unless you're really going to show that ambition with a target that is possible, then theres no point going for them at all.

Have serious doubts we'll agree a fee for Diaz or have enough time to conclude such a deal. We move at such a snails pace, it's more likely this deal will fall through and for us to revisit in the summer unfortunately get gazumpted. This story has been written loads of time at Spurs... We were lead to believe the stadium will ensure better investments.

On a positive note as this is written there's still time for loan deals etc to be done.
You've skipped some pages here, haven't you?

Exactly this.

There's no doubt that some of the signings made by Leicester, Wolves, Everton, Villa and West Ham over the past 2-3 years would improve us greatly.

That's where we should be looking.

And I think Paratici is for the most part doing that. Sarr and Gil were vintage Leicester/Dortmund type signings. Even Romero, as expensive as he was, was unproven at a top team and still one step below the big boys.

I think he is trying to do this, but also don’t think you blame him for having a swing at a potential star if he was available.

It's not just about Liverpool being a bigger club with consistent CL, but what many do not want to admit is that they are also just more appealing both in terms of the way they play and the teammates that Diaz would have around him there. I hate to say it but having better players always makes it easier to sign better players to play alongside, and we only really have Kane and Son with pulling power. I can't imagine he is thrilled by the prospect of our defense and midfield in comparison, not to mention that it's just more obvious where and how he will be utilised in Klopp's system and what impact he could have. If he came here, we don't know if in a year from now we're playing a completely different style which doesn't suit him at all.

We're still finding our identity under Conte, and for now we need to be recruiting more smartly rather than just splashing huge sums on marquee players because they are hyped up in the media. Honestly I didn't even have time to get excited by this transfer it was over so quickly and just didn't seem like the kind of signing we would really make happen.

Yep, and now also selling Minamino who hasn't cut it and Origi.

They are such a well run club, even with their outgoings.

They don't hang on to players too long if they don't make the grade. Although Origi has actually been an amazing super sub for them. All you can ask for from a back up striker.
They have signed 2 first team players in 3 years....

Imagine the scenes in here if we had won the league then done that.

Firstly thanks to Stoof, Rob and A&C for this it was muchly needed.

As I said unless things changed I wouldn't be posting again so glad that it has.

Late last night we had all the financials pretty much in place for Diaz, both clubs and player were happy, and only details needed to be done.

What exactly has happened since? Well I know as much as the rest of you on that. I haven't heard anything on it and the club has gone into full lockdown information wise. I spoke to my man this morning, who had spoken to someone who had just gotten off the phone with FP(bit Chinese whispery I know) and from what I've heard he's still positive about the rest of the window. What that means I don't know. What I do know though is they are trying to back the manager but we do have finite resources and we do have a lot of squad to build. Bare that in mind when you start shouting we should have just thrown everything at it in the first bid. What it hopefully shows you all though is that we do have money and we are prepared to spend it on the right players.

Hopefully we are back on track because whatever any of you think, or whether or not we get the players you want, we will be busy.
If the reports are true, I reckon that Liverpool firmed up their interest (with Mendes at least, if not Porto) and that instantly blows us out of the water.

They are a much more attractive proposition than us, not least cos they pay higher wages. If people don't like that then boo hoo. It's a fact and it's not gonna change soon.

Personally, I'm not that disappointed. Much as we'd like a shiny new toy we have limited resources and I'd rather see them allocated elsewhere for now.

Thanks for sharing @Trix. Sorry it got to this point. Can't believe people get so upset about transfer gossip.

If our only hope of signing Diaz was to do it in the dead of night, it smacks of hilarious hijinks and incompetence. When do transfers ever happen in silence, especially if you're worried that the player might want to go to a different team
So you wouldn't of tried if there was a small chance it could have happened??

But they already have an exceptional side so it's not easy to improve.

The amount of times we get beaten to a deal, I genuinely wonder if we were ever actually serious about signing the player. It's like the scouting started during the window and we were still unsure. Scouting should be done before transfer windows open so r focus on negotiating a deal. Other clubs are clearly willing to spend the required fee and at 45m euros that's not a lot if we trying to upgrade 25-30m euro players.

Sounds exactly like what we used to say 5 years ago. We all looked at our first team and couldn't really see where we could improve and the rest is history. Liverpool's bench is almost as bad as ours was back then and it's why their fans are so pissed - Klopp is only here for two more years and they might "only" finish with two major trophies to show for it despite building one of the most competitive sides the league has seen in a long time.

They're far bigger than us worldwide, they have multiple LFC stores over here in Ireland as it is, there isnt even a Man Utd one. Their world marketing likely brings in a lot more than us, although I'm open to correction if this isn't the case.

They spent the Coutinho money remarkably well as well. They may not have a modern stadium but its full every week and turn players who aren't good enough out a lot quicker than we have done.

They're well run and haven't had the upheaval we've had since 2019. Before Klopp arrived they were a mess.
the Ireland-Liverpool connection predates football, no?

First news to break was that his agents were unhappy with Mendes being involved and wanted him cut out of the deal.
All of a sudden Liverpool arrive with a bid, and send representatives to Argentina and not to Porto?
Perhaps his agents are trying to pressure the exclusion of Mendes? Let's wait and see..

What a shame, there was a breif moment in the world of football Liverpool and Tottenham under Klopp and Pochittno were even. Imo we messed around while Liverpool made strategic positioning signings.

Why are you under the impression that Spurs were desperate to get the deal done without anyone knowing? Levy and Paratici know how it works. They would have known very well that it was in both Porto's and Diaz's agent's interests to have as many clubs interested as possible.
