And Dier and Davies don't count, which sucks. Is there any sort of plea we can make to get those two changed?! Would seem like players from the UK regardless should count towards HG as thats what the whole point of the initiative is, or so I thought.

I believe that Dier is fucked either way, but Davies is HG for PL but not for CL.

Exactly! Its possible to have a squad of English players where none are classified as home grown!

I may be wrong but I dont think either of you know what constitutes a Home grown player. Being home grown doesnt necessarily mean English. It means that the player was brought up through an English academy despite nationality. Cesc Fabregas was classified as home grown back in the day and he is Spanish. In other words a Foreigner can also be Home grown.
Knew it didn’t mean english born players but did’t know what it was exactly!! Thanks for making it clear to me!!

Just wanna add here that I don't think anyone should be chewing their wrists off just because Barca are now gunning hard for Malcom. Doesn't mean he's the next Messi. They signed Paulinho after all.

Loving the late drama on this deal though.

Big downside however, is if he rips it up at Barca, is that it's a player we probably could have signed quite easily earlier in the summer.

I think going for Martial and Zaha is the right thing to do but to be honest right now I can't see us getting either. I could see Levy willing to pay stupid money late on to 'back Poch' but imagine both Utd and Palace will stand firm.

But at least then the club can say they tried like usual!

Bloody deja vu really Levy always trying to make some smart deal which does not come off then panic buy at the end. Why not offer the going rate 6 weeks ago prices go up during the window not down. Levy's tactics are out of date and he is failing the manager!! If we have a poor season totally at Levy's door...

Why would they change Dier's? He was trained and grew up not in England so how can that be home grown?

Davies I can understand why we would not be happy, counts in the PL but not CL due to being trained in Wales! But as it is all split into countries for CL it will always be English trained (even though seansea play in the English leagues)

Sort of glad we didn’t sign him - he seems like the kind of player who would have jumped ship at the first sniff of interest from a bigger club / someone looking to pay him bigger wages.

He's a talented player wanted by several clubs, he could have forced a move in January but stayed and is now getting his move.

I don't see what he's done wrong in this scenario.

The whole point of homegrown was to encourage teams to play English players for the benefit of the National Team as well as get academies producing talent.

Dier may have trained in Portugal but his lack of homegrown status despite being born in Cheltenham gives him a disadvantage as he's basically classified as foreign even though he's captained the England national team.

Personally I think it's ridiculous that you can be classified as non-home grown in this kind of situation. It will only discourage youngsters from joining the likes of Barca or Real Madrids youth set ups if they get the chance to as ultimately in doing so they limit their chances of a Premier League/ English team return. The rules should be any English footballer or any footballer born oversees that comes over to England and is trained by the youth academy. It's a silly rule that puts unnecessary obstacles up for English talent and it should be amended at the benefit of all national teams so it encourages big domestic clubs to sign players with roots in the set up and not hinder their chances of a move or progression

Latest on this one it seems is that Barcas last ditch attempts seem to have swung the deal over the line. Looks like Malcom prefers them to Roma

You mean a player prefers to play for one of the richest and best clubs in football? Shocking.

Obviously he was going to choose Barca. Those Airport dwelling Roma fans must be so pissed off as they sip on their espressos this morning. Killer blow after the club going public on the deal a few hours before
