Yeah I think it is incompetence rather than anything else from them.

They don't strike me as the sort of outfit to actually do any proper research so it's probably laziness more than anything else.

Rumour has it that the journalist did seek to do some research and inquire after the facts, but nobody was around to answer the phone.

Apparently, no-one expected the Spanish inquisition. :cautious:

I read it as them implying that being Jewish is a problem... "Not intended to harm the image of Tottenham"... Why the fuck would having Jewish origins and fans harm the image of anything?

Well, THFC pretty much forced them to make that statement by acting so offended and insulted by their previous article.

Look, I fucking hate real madrid and anything associated with them, but what some posters are saying above is truth: Marca was only stating one of the reasons we're hated so much, they never said it's okay or acceptable to hate us for that reason.

To be fair it's easy to see how the phrase "Their Jewish origin has made them into a club hated by rival fans", could be misconstrued as them saying it's a justifiable reason for other fans to dislike us.

If they'd said "Their propensity to punch people in the face has made them into a club hated by rival fans", then that would obviously have been saying that our arseholeitude meant we deserved to be hated, so it wasn't a particularly sensible way to phrase things.

I think the clarification means we can now all move on though.

I get people saying it's a storm in a teacup but don't forget how our fans have been targeted by anti-semites when we've played in Rome and Lyon recently simply through association. Having "hated for their Jewish origins" splashed as the sub headline of a major Spanish paper is massively irresponsible. Don't trust Spanish police to behave as it is never mind any far right dickhead with a stupid grudge
Considering how the Spanish riot police stormtrooper thugs behaved in Catalunya recently, I wouldn't trust anybody wearing the uniform of any Spanish government agency, least of all the Peelers. Franco's spirit is still alive, even though he's been dead just over 40 years.

Question. If the background to it was different and you replaced the word Jewish with Black would the reaction still be meh? I don't think so.

I'm not losing sleep over it, but for a newspaper ( no matter how shit ) to print that is utterly unnecessary and pretty disgraceful imo.

As for their apology, it reads more like "sorry we upset you, please don't be so upset that when we tap up your players you refuse to sell to us".

*****.
It's the same thing. If Black Tigers Ball Club is knowingly hated because of the skin colour of a proportion of the fan base and perceived ties, and a journalist writes "the club is hated because of racism", then has the journo done anything wrong, describing known facts?

We must be vary of getting so sensitive that we react with anger when anybody associates Spurs and Jews. It can sort of indirectly be perceived as discrimination if we become infuriated and aggrieved by association, like it is something wrong to be associated with fans from a religious community. It isn't. WE certainly should not have any overly sensitive emotions, directly or indirectly, deliberate or not, about having Jewish fans. It seems to me that some fans have jumped to conclusions because somebody wrote about this topic. Instantly we just must feel so infuriated. But I guess my question is, what are we actually feeling this anger for?

The only legitimate concern that has been voiced in this thread is whether such a topic might put our travelling fans at risk. I think that's a worthy consideration. But I for one don't think we should kill the messenger in this case.

I don't understand why it even needed to be mentioned at all.
An unsubtle subtext saying "hey, they're Jews and we're Catholics living in the dark ages, so get them!" as a way of whipping the moron element up against us. Because wearing a different type of hat is enough to get people angry these days.

The only thing that really annoyed me was that there was no disctinction between football and reality, the misinformation didn't really bother me much, I just wish they'd clearly stated that we are not hated by other fans because of our jewish connection, we are hated by anti-semites for our jewish connection, other fans just hate us because 1) we can be as obnoxious as they can and 2) most of the other clubs we beat regularly so it comes with the territory.

My take on it is this. Whenever we play RM, which is not enough IMHO, Marca try and stir up some sort of shite, belittling us, in order to wind up their fans so that the atmosphere at the game is ramped up. Normally they try the sort of stuff like emphasising our poor form, injuries or how well they are playing. On this occasion I think they have royally fcuked up.

Whatever the intention behind the article, the team will have got the gist. I think they will not only have been up for the game, but the article will get the whole squad wound up. I think the adrenalin will be flowing more than it normally would. I think Marca may just have awoken the tiger. RM beware!

Don't think the team will even be aware of an article in a spanish paper.

Well the article implies all clubs hate us for being Jewish, which has the knock on implication that the UK is full of anti semites, when we have lost hundreds of thousands of our friends and families fighting fascists when they were getting rounded up we sheltered them here in safety, which we are rightly proud of. I think 99.99% of all football fans would be upset to be branded an anti semite, save a few bellends. And actually, even they probably don’t want to extinguish an entire race based on their ethnicity, but use anti Semitic language more like playground insults, drunken banter or whatever.

So yes the Marca article was badly worded, and they have apologised quite rightly.

That’s the end of it for me!

Even if it’s as you say (& I don’t neccessarily agree, there’s a lot of projection in your case-study) it seems to me that it’s ‘all the other clubs’, or the UK even, that they should be apolgising to if anyone

*shrug - smacks of contrived offense to me. But then I’m not Jewish so perhaps it’s a case of not having walked in those shoes ..
