Think i'd prefer Rojo to Davies tbh. With him and another LB at the club i'm not sure we'd need 4 out and out centre backs.

A bit off topic I know, but how well do you think Hitzfeld has done with the team and are you better off now than before he was managing you? Just interested because I saw he had retired.
Hitzfeld has done an excellent job, really united the team and tactically he was of course miles ahead of Kobi Kuhn - although he also has had a better squad to work with. I think he did really well, it's just a shame at the 2010 WC Chile screwed us over with their diving and antics and then we couldn't score against Honduras. This time around we did well, perfect in qualifying, and I think we deserved to move on against an overrated Argentina, tactically outsmarted them, Messi was completely shut down, 3 best chances of the game were ours, etc. Considering Belgium and then Costa Rica/Netherlands were up next, it really is a case of what if.

I don't know yet if we'll be better off, but I doubt it. Hitzfeld is probably the best manager worldwide of the last few decades. Petkovic is a somewhat accomplished coach in his own right but it remains to be seen how we play from here on out. One thing that is positive is that our youth setups are consistently churning out quality players, so the squad itself should continue to get better. I'm interested to see how we do vs England in our first Euro 2016 qualifier coming up. Who knows, maybe we'll be brilliant but I can't imagine a team would improve after losing a manager like Hitzfeld.

It didn't look like that. Although to be fair the swiss hardly attacked, and I can't remember Xhaka in a single play
Xhaka definitely stuck to the right (drifted inside one or two times to cover if needed defensively, as did Mehmedi), and Shaqiri played mainly centrally with a free role. It's how we played since the 2H of the Ecuador game.

A concern I have about Rojo is his discipline. Last season he got 8 yellow cards and 2 red cards in the league (24 games) and a further 3 yelows & 1 red in 4 games in other comps.

He also got given 10 yellows and 2 reds in 24 games in the league the year before.
I wouldn't be to concerned about that, in Portugal just like Spain all you have to do is breathe on someone & you get a card.. take Gary Medel for an example, he picked up yellow & Red cards left, right & centre in Spain, then once he moved to PL he could get away with those challenges.
I watched about 5 or 6 Sporting matches last year mainly to watch Andre Martins & to see if William Carvalho was as good as made out to be ( he's not, although there's something there to work with but his price-tag is totally inflated) & from what I've seen of Rojo he really knows how to defend & I think he would adapt to PL well.

Good point. He did get 7 yellows and 1 red in 11 games in Russia too but maybe their league is the same as Portugal and Spain that way you described?

Given the depressing regularity with which ours get broken, I wouldn't feel comfortable with fewer than six. ;)

You can say that again. See my previous post.
As a previous poster pointed out, the Portuguese league is practically non-contact, so he may have had adaptation problems. I'm sure a good coach can get more discipline out of him.

My concern is that this didn't occur to Rojo after the first 10 odd yellows and 2 reds....

Possibly so. It's to really say without seeing all the incidents in question. He's impressed me in the WC though. I just feel we need a little nastiness in our defence, we were way too easy to play-through last year. Obviously habitually getting sent off is good for no-one though.

Agree. I am not against him. Has played very well at the World Cup, and as you say a little nasty is what we need. Poch being his countryman and a former defender might help sort him out.

Add to that the Rojo will be suspended for quite a few games. 17 yellows and 3 reds last season ....

He has 6 red cards (only 1 straight red) in his whole career. And it is way more difficult to get a card in the PL than in the rest of the leagues.
