True, but he may cause the why is he on double my wages mentality and unsettle the squad.

If you look at it that way, then we shouldn't be trying to sign anyone who has a reputation at international level... We should only be buying young/unknown players who aren't on big wages already.

Yeah, I understand that he may be better than what we have, but Ali has played one season and he was immense - he'll only improve and has a much higher ceiling than Gotze (who, maybe I'm wrong, but I can't see him becoming a better player than he already is).

I'm asking is it worth jepordising Ali in order to shoehorn Gotze into the side. Maybe both can be utilised. How do we line up if he signs on the first day of the season and what are the repurcussions?
Personally I don't feel you can jeopardize someone when their competition is really just one person. Given amount of games available + fitness + form + injuries there's opportunity abound.

I would tend to agree with that as well, in principle. I wonder, would Gotze want to join a team that he isn't sure to make the first 11 for - I know as mad as that sounds considering it's us.

Hhmm, I like to think the Standard are pretty good although I would feel more sure about it if it was Tom Collomosse writing it.

I like Wijnaldum but I just find it hard to believe we would prefer him over Gotze considering the prices being quoted. Gotze would be cheaper at this rate.

Surprised as well but...

would Gotze be cheaper wages wise? No

Would he be willing to take a pay cut? I doubt it

Also, whilst I would love us to sign a truly world class player (Isco, James) it's still Poch's decision and if he prefers someone else to Gotze then we have to respect that.

Not sure about that... Even if you take their transfer fees as the reported £25m for Wijnaldum and £20m for Gotze, the former is reportedly on £60k a week at Toon, so if we offer similar over a 5 year deal that's £15.6m in wages. Gotze is reportedly on double, so that's a commitment of over £30m.

So total deals -
Wijnaldum - £40m
Gotze - £50m

That's going to be down to wages I reckon, better stick a fork in this one and get used to Wijnaldam.

Under Poch/Mitchell I think that is our strategy in a nutshell really.
We buy up and coming talent or affordable internationals with PL experience.

Fortunately Gotze is 10 times the player too so it's still a bargain

If we were to sign him - where would he play? He'd be taking Ali's place I assume - so I can't really see this as being something that we absolutely would want to pull off.

Maybe I'm wrong - but really, would he be worth it if he were stunting Ali's growth? Or is this the kind of competition Ali needs? We have enough games I suppose were both would get play time but each are players who would want and deserve to be playing every week.

We have 3 attacking roles within our team and then one playmaking CM role.

We need 4 x top quality CL and PL winning attacking players for these roles and 2 rotation players.

This with Gotze would look like:

AM: Alli, Ericssen, Lamela, Gotze | N'Jie, Son

Basically we're switching out Chadli.

Even if we had Zero injuries or suspensions across those 6 players, which is highly unlikely, there' still going to be enough games for everyone to get good game time AND everyone will have proper competition for their places in the team.

Yes but in general you get what you pay for and Gotze is 3 levels in class above Windmill.

We line up with Gotze in the team and repurcussions are we are more likely to win football matches

The repercussions are Alli doesn't get to the end of the season looking completely burnt out and knackered, we have a close to world class, world cup winner in our Squad, Poch has more match winners to influence games and take us to the next level and we have top level quality as cover in case of injuries instead of Chadli, Carroll etc
