Emerson - 0

And that’s not a zero, its a black hole that’s sucked all the other player ratings into an infinite black chasm of nothingness.

Lock thread.

Nobody was good really. One positive was Bentancur, he is going to be quality for us. We weren’t good enough across the board really but I’m actually gonna give it to Lucas. He wasn’t perfect by any rate but he was pivotal in both goals and we clearly lost an attacking edge when he came off. But really, awful performance.

Shit all round really. Gave it to Son who was our biggest threat imo.

Our defence was all over the place tonight but there were a catalogue of individual errors from back to front. Just have to put it behind us and get on with it.

Emerson 0.

Sanchez 0.

Winks 1.

Hoijberg 0.

Those 4 cost us that game. Simply not good enough. The others played football.

Hold on, I was told WBs had little defensive responsibilty, that’s why we were gonna but Traore there he was just gonna bomb forward and be covered. But now we have a defensive liability at WB.... GUYS we don’t control the midfield, that’s our problem, it’s as plain as day. You want to blame individuals go right ahead but it’s our midfield as a whole is the problem.

Lloris kept it respectable. Kane and Son were largely starved of possession. If one isn't passing to the other, they don't get much quality. Everybody else bottled it. But the set-up didn't help, and that's on Conte.

The midfield two weren't the ones not marking, switching off, panicking in possession, hoofing the ball into touch, getting outmuscled and generally standing off. Winks and PEH were completely overrun and chasing shadows and that's down to Conte not dropping Son or Lucas deeper to help out. It was as clear as day from the first five minutes.

Birdie - Lloris, Bentancur
Par - Kane, Son, Romero, Kulusevski, Bergwijn
Bogey - Moura, Davies, Reguilon, Højbjerg
Double bogey - ...
Triple bogey - Winks, Sanchez, Royal

Doherty, Dier, Skipp and Bentancur all in for the weekend please. Even half fit Skipp and Dier can't do worse than the two who replaced them.

I give it Lloris for keeping things respectable in the first half :)

Lloris — 7: good saves, couldn’t do much about the goals, and defending in front of him

Emerson — 3: can’t defend, can’t attack, has to be replaced for Doherty; which is the worst grade I can give him

Sanchez — 3: actually thought he was worse than ER just because he left Royal with more to do

Romero — 6: some good interceptions but passing all over the place, piling the pressure on us

Davies — 5: unlucky slip but thought he was generally solid. Far more pressing issues in that defence…

Reguilon — 4: pointless getting that far forward if he can’t do anything with the ball

Winks — 4: deer/headlights

PEH — 5: slightly better version of the above

Lucas — 6: tried to make stuff happen but Southampton gave him little space; nice movement for the goal. Shouldn’t have been taken off.

Son — 6: looking lively, and probably should have had more than one goal

Kane — 6: looks a lot sharper, but never really got a sniff tonight due to poor service

Subs:
Bentancur — 7: looks aware on the ball and lively; like him a lot
Kulu — 5: a nothing showing
Bergwijn — N/A: should have been on earlier

See, I see that statistic and think that's not just on Sanchez/Royal. 17 times each is 34 times they got the ball with very little in front of them. I see it as a systemic failure by our midfielders to give them better options (PEH and Winks are habitual hiders from the ball) and by Conte to allow us to be overrun for 60 minutes before bringing on Bentancur.

That was pretty bad. So many bad decisions. Royal looks stuck. Can't get forward enough to be a consistent threat which is essential for this system to work.

I'd have put on doherty at half time or switched to 352.

I am looking at this positively .... Conte will definitely now know that he needs to upgrade Royal, Højbjerg and Winks and that Sanchez and Davies are probably best as backups rather than starters. Another positive was that Bentancur was fantastic - head and shoulders above all our other CMs. Also, as much as I like the lad, Reguilon is not good enough offensively or defensively in this system. He's a 7/10 at both ends and we need more than that offensively.

Lloris - 7 - Couple of good saves.
Royal - 4 - Nowhere near good enough.
Sanchez - 4 - Terrible throughout. Rabbit in headlights defending. Toblerone boots.
Romero - 7 - Not his best game, but the only defender to come out of that game with any credit.
Davies - 5 - Catastrophic error for their first goal.
Reguillon - 5 - Missed a sitter and repeatedly failed with final balls.
Højbjerg - 5 - Was simply awful tonight, despite a good run and assist for the first goal.
Winks - 5 - Not good enough and terrible under pressure. Offers zero defensively.
Moura - 7 - Made our two goals.
Son - 7 - Great finish for what should have been the winner. Fairly anonymous apart form that though.
Kane - 6 - Did not really trouble their CBs all game. Some nice passes when he dropped deep, but he needs to start winning the ball and holding it up more.

Bentancur - 9 - MOTM for us by a country mile. Instantly looked at home amid the frantic football and always seemed to have more time on the ball than anyone else. He actually has his head up and is constantly scanning before getting possession. Something Winks and Højbjerg rarely do (and why they often play a backwards when not necessary).
Kulusevski - 6 - Never looked like he got up to the speed of the game.
Bergwijn - 6 - Ditto.

We defend as a team, when you play with WBS u depend on your midfielders to cover. We simply don’t control the ball, we have not one midfielder comfortable on the ball, never mind under pressure, Southampton walked though us at home.

Not gonna leave scorings but just some noteworthy observations from me

Emerson is shit. It isnt even poor performances. He is just shit.

Kane played well

Reggie should have scored and displayed poor decision making at times

Lucas, didnt play well but contributed to the two goals hence he plays

We miss Dier, our best defender

Bentacur glides across the pitch which I like and makes it look effortless with how he is across the pitch

Kulu is still walking off the pitch as we speak - so so so so so so slow.
