Match Threads - what is it you want?

I think people just need to not be so precious or uptight about the match threads. Emotions run high during a game and the thread is a place for them to vent or rejoice. If people get offended by that then maybe don't join the match thread.

Its equally annoying reading sanctimonious posts in there calling the contributors "Bed wetters" or Children, etc.

Im sure a post match reflection thread would read a whole lot differently once people have a chance to calm down.
If such posts were restricted to the Match Thread I completely agree with you but they are not !

These childish repetitive posts have spilled over into many other threads. Look at the action the Mods had to take to bring the Winter Transfer threads back under control.

Of course, i was only referring to the match threads, which is what this debate is dedicated to. I agree that if there is an element of childish repetitive posts elsewhere, they cannot be given the benefit of match day emotion that i was suggesting in my post.

I’m lining up a ‘knee-jerk pic’ for the match thread tonight… stir it up a bit :cautious:….
The biggest problem I have with the thread is my own posts; when I scroll back the next morning and see how reactionary & cringey they are - but that’s the fun of the fair

OK, seeing as we're almost done for the season, how do people think the match threads have been lately?

Have you noticed a change? Or is it pretty much the same?

(Maybe I’ve been in good spirits because we’ve been performing better)
But I’ve feel it’s not been as ‘aggressive’; and folk - generally - have not been ripping into one another … I don’t know what tweaks have been made, if any, but it’s certainly makes for a more pleasant stroll into the thread, rather than a crouched-down sprint across a battlefield holding one’s helmet ..(open myself up to abuse now ?)
Tomorrow will be a true litmus test

The limited few I’ve been able to watch-along with have been decent and less aggressive but not sure if that’s because of any changes or an upturn in form.

Main test will be Sunday as it’s not on tv so imagine many will have eyes on the thread looking to glean any snippets from those with access to overseas coverage.

Seems to have improved, more people discussing and more informative. But a good balance of emotion as well!

Rather than arguing or just saying “FFS Dele” and trying to be funny after every post.

Surprised to hear people are closing their accounts and citing the match thread . Hasn't the match thread always been a bit..er..boisterous , like when people go to matches ? It doesn't look worse to me

EG there's an audible sigh of disappointment at matches when a pass is misplaced...same in match thread imo .

Are you completely sure its the negativity here that is turning people off ? Some other factors not involved ?....like the team being frustrating atm .
Yeah it's this. Match threads haven't changed fans, expectations have. After Poch we expect. I can take dire winning football, or exciting losing football, but dire losing football is a hard pill to swallow.
We all look down on Troopz and all from the Arsenal watch along videos, but I understand their pain. I don't go crazy like them externally, but internally it does break me occasionally. I've had to take time away from spurs just to get right. As I've got older it's become more frequent. This is meant to be a pleasurable distraction from the mundanality/ misery of normal life, so what's the point if it makes you feel worse. It's a wee bit weak of me, but I'm old and tired, and I just don't care to soldier through it, so I stop following all sports for a few weeks/ months.

This video really sums it up for me

I feel its been more balanced, with some reasoned arguments at least as to why some are questioning player X,Y or Z

I've largely stayed out of them during games, only popping in at HT/FT and shortly after teams are announced.

I've enjoyed our games much more, even if we haven't won for it.

No match thread needed. A running commentary operated by a few posters would be still be my vote for those who can't watch.

Not much to moan about at the moment.
Unless you're one of life's born negativists.

Could we have a re-cap column of some of the best knee-jerk, bone headed
insulting and downright anti Spurs declarations.
The 'Call yerself a fan' collection.

Sorry to say it but just Yankspur leaving has made a difference.

I don't venture in there that much but it seems to be a better atmosphere now. Could be the better results but hopefully not.

I'm not sure how others feel but I feel like there's less animosity over the forum in general, Just seems recently that things have vastly improved, might be things the admins have implemented, perhaps it could be due to results, perhaps it could be due to certain posters moving on, perhaps I've managed to become less of an asshole and I'm only noticing it because I'm not doing it, who knows

The whole of SC seems much happier which I assume is because the team is doing much better and actually challenging for a CL place. The real test will come however when we hit a bad patch or somehow miss out on a CL place.

what I find strange is that when I’m watching a match, the comments in the match thread rarely correlate with what I’m seeing on the pitch.

It’s massively sensationalised, exaggerated, hyperbolic and overly emotive.

like, if I don’t post “arrgghh! FFS ROYAL!! You’re fucking shit!!” at every loose pass

It doesn’t mean I’m not a proper fan

I think some overvalue their opinions and think we want to read them ad nauseam.

I have observed a notable reduction in the number of pointless, content-free attacks on individual players, especially around team-selection time, which I presume is the direct result of the clear instructions from management printed at the head of every match thread. This is good and demonstrates the power of firm intervention. But do not remove the instruction. Leave it there permanently. There will be a new generation of scapegoats and you will need to muzzle a new generation of idiots.

In apparent compensation, I have observed a large increase in the number of equally-pointless, content-free posts assuring everyone with total, evidence-free certainty that "we have blown top 4 now", "we will surely blow top 4", "we are certain to lose to Man City/Liverpool/Arsenal" (but not Brighton), "will be lucky to lose 3-0" without XX injured player, etc.

We have the match threads inundated with people talking about how they feel in advance of the match, rising to an improbable maximum in the current Norwich thread, where virtually nothing else is being discussed except about how fans feel.

This clearly bears the implication that how fans feel and what they say about the match before it starts will have some kind of influence over the result. It's not only pure spam, it's remarkably arrogant, because how we feel as fans will only influence the result insofar as it influences the support of the few thousand dedicated, indefatigable, inexhaustibly enthusiastic fans who travel to away matches in places like Norwich, i.e., not at all.

It's the "wearing my lucky pants" school of football support, i.e., it's superstition, like people who think their words in advance of kickoff can create something called a "jinx". All of it is absolute bullshit and it is absolutely all over the match threads, to a degree that it renders the threads pointless to read through. There's no information there, no tactical or footballing discussion, just panicking, superstitious fans indulging themselves at the expense of those of us who actually want to have a discussion about football.

I think that aspect of football fandom is funny, I don't mind it at all. I think match threads is the place for more emotional and nonsensical posting, it's a reaction thread. If you want to have an in depth discussion about something, make a separate thread about it where you can set the terms. But the attacks on players etc is obviously bad and should be discouraged.
