At Spurs for a trial.

He's a 20-year-old Australian keeper, currently at Central Coast Mariners. CCM finished in the top couple of sides in the A-League in the past two seasons, largely down to this young man, who won the cutely-titled Harry Kewell Award, essentially Young Player of the Year. Last season he played in the Asian Champions League. He made his debut for the national team back in February.

Looks very good from YouTube (yes, yes, I know), stays big really well and superb feet.

Bit more about him in the article:

http://www.smh.com.au/sport/football/mariners-keeper-set-on-earning-his-spurs-20120713-221e9.html

On the day we announce releasing Jansson and Ranieri, this would seem a step up. Perhaps one to sign, do pre-season with and either loan back or lend to a 1st division side?

From what i remember of the a-league last season he was great and has been for the last few seasons, definitely the best in the league although that's probably not hard!

have seen lots of him - brilliant young goalkeeper in the A-League. He has done very well for the Central Coast.

Aussie Spurs fan assessment

and another one here, Central Coast Mariners fan

kid has amazing reflexes but it takes more than that to make it in the EPL, I wish him the best of luck, would love to see a local boy playing for Spurs

Australian goalkeeper Mathew Ryan's immense potential has been recognised by Premier League club Tottenham, who have invited the 20-year-old to train with them.

Central Coast custodian Ryan will have a week to impress new Spurs coach Andre Villas-Boas in August, however the A-League side insist they have had no discussions about a permanent move to London.
Ryan, named the A-League's best keeper in the 2011-12 season, has a season remaining on his contract. He was drafted into the national squad for the first time in February when the Socceroos met Saudi Arabia in a World Cup qualifying dead rubber.
"It is a magnificent opportunity and experience for Mathew to have a look at a top Premier League club," Mariners chairman Peter Turnbull said. "Tottenham move into their new training facility on the first of August so it will be a great experience for him.
"I think it is reflective of Mathew's standing in the game. He has stature, he deservedly won a number of awards last season and has already been picked as Mark Schwarzer's understudy for the Socceroos - he is a guy who is sought after."
Ryan will depart for England on August 2.

Maybe getting ahead of myself but do we think he's gonna get international clearance if Spurs decide they want him?

An Aussie friend of mine texted me about this guy. He's a journo for football out there and goes to a lot of the games. He couldn't speak highly enough of Ryan and said it was a very smart move by AVB.

I have seen him many times as a regular attendee of A-League Games (long term Adelaide season ticket holder). Solid keeper, a little small and while he can do the excellent he seems to struggle with low bouncing or skidding balls or shots that hang in the air a little. Still young and seems to work really hard, has made a few errors but never seems to let them get to him. Probably the 2/3rd best keeper in the league over the last few years and was excellent last year albeit in a very solid defensive team.

He is probably not the highest rated of the Australian young keepers coming through but definitely a prospect.

Not sure. We have a few young Aussies on the books though, so I guess it wouldn't be a huge problem. Would the Kolpak ruling also play a part or that restricted to Sed Effrikenz?

Much better option than Butland.
He also would only cost 500K as opposed to 7m which is what Birmingham are asking for.

Looks promising from the reports and videos, but I'd like to see some of the goals he concedes as well as the saves he makes. Just making videos with the positives, especially for goalkeepers is pretty misleading. Gomes would look like the best keeper in the world if there was just a video of all his saves but it really doesn't tell the whole story. But still definitely some positives from the videos.

I do worry about his size though.

The Aussies on our books are from families who originate from Italy and Massimo and Giancarlo both carry Italian (ie EU) passports as well as Aussie I think. Depends on what passport (s) Ryan holds

I agree, 99% of the saves he makes in the video look pretty standard.

2 things to bear in mind, 1) as mentioned, he's only 5ft 11/slender build which is worrying. 2) The standard of football in Australia is horrendous. I've had the unfortunate pleasure of watching the Mariner's play Robbie Fowler's old side ... the highlight of the game was a goal after about 20 seconds, followed by lapping up the sunshine whilst enjoying a beer and a pie in the stand and laughing at the '20' die hard away fans', lol.

I'm pretty sure you can get international clearance if you are considered a special talent also. Being only 20 and soon to be number 1 for your country hints he may get a work permit under those grounds.

Pretty sure Kolpak only covers Saffas and Pacific Islanders.

Yeah, thought that was the case, wasn't 100% sure. Ta for the confirmation. Anyways, I wouldn't imagine there'll be too many problems getting him the necessary papers if we do sign him. Wonder if he'll get a game in one of the pre-season XI games during his trial.
