Maybe there’s a secret deal where they will release him at the end of the season and he rejoins us on a free so that it is just a loan as previously agreed.

If we've fucked him around then his mate Kane ain't going to be happy.
Is there not a world where Doherty, already getting limited gametime, sees us signing an undisputed starting RB which could potentially make him the 4th string RB coming into next season and himself request a loan to allow him to get game time and re-establish himself? The club not being able to loan him out agrees to accommodate and release him in his bests interests? Or is it all just gloom and doom.

Don’t see how it’s a good deal for us. We’ve got zero money for a decent wing back with 18 months left on contract. Paratici is truly shit at selling players

I agree it’s not great but no one was a gonna give us money for him. He’s a specialist wing back when very few teams play that system. Better to get him off the wage bill rather than have him hanging around the club for the rest of the season where he was unlikely to even make match day squads.

To be honest, I thought most people saw him as a bargain at the time given the season he has just had for Wolves but we signed him for a manager who didn't play wing backs. He then played under two managers who did play wingbacks and bar the teams purple patch at the end of last season was very poor. the NLD was a farce as he had numerous occasions to cross and just cutback ....... seemed a good crack though, definitely someone you would have a pint with

So long Matt. We'll always have those 4 games last season where you looked useful for a bit. And the signing video of course.

Felt like he good be a great signing at the time. Ultimately I think he really does only play well as a wing-back, and tbh I think he should have played way more than Emerson and IMO we always looked better offensively with him in the side. But probably made sense for him to be the RB to leave permanently with less sell-on value than Emerson and Spence going on loan.

Considering after his first 18 months it seemed like he was genuinely one of the worst Spurs signings in living memory, I actually warmed to him quite a lot towards the end and will look back on him fondly

He was limited, but once Conte came in he scored a fair few goals, and for a 5-6 game spell, pre the nasty injury he got against Villa, he was genuinely fantastic and one of our best players. One assist from a deep cross - can't remember who scored from it or even the opposition for that matter - was absolutely sublime.

Wish him the best of luck in Spain and hope he gets a move to club that suits him after that.

To me it sounds like we did him a favor. He wanted to play, had a team he liked interested, but we were stuck on the loan bit, and given his relative minimal value come summer, we cut bait and helped him out. It doesn’t look great when it’s last minute like that, but did we even hear about Atletico Madrid before today? I’m all for taking shots at the club because most of the time it’s warranted, but this seems like a beneficial move with everyone’s interests in mind.

Doc is playing the long game. Goes to Atletico and learns the dark arts from Simeone. In the summer he joins Villa and cripples Matty Cash in training.

Fair play to him, most likely got his contract paid out in full, gets a sweet gig in Spain for 6 months paid well and is then a free agent. Someone will pay him a decent wage for a few more years maybe MLS or middle east, he's got Mendes' company as his agency, so highly doubt he got ripped off by Spurs, great work if you can get it.

He's made out like a bandit, we should be so lucky, Spurs on the other hand, what a joke?
