Guardian going with it too now.

Last summer Tottenham called someone who works for Schalke and enquired politely about the availability of Max Meyer, and the German club informed them that it would take £39m to prise him out of their clammy grasp. This summer they tried again, and were apparently informed that the asking price had fallen to a giveaway £17.5m, a result of the 21-year-old’s refusal to sign a new contract to replace the one that expires next summer.

Would rather Barkley than him as I've never saw this guy play, looks tiny in the video, good thing is that we were interested last summer supposedly

They seem like very different players but seem to occupy a similar position. Might be a case of what type of player Poch wants because I'm not sure we'd sign both.

He's looked quite good for Germany U21s. Similar to Mata or David Silva in style (although obviously not at that level yet).

Would be a great signing but JJ has already quashed it, pretty much like every bit of ITK this summer... would love to know who we will sign this year as the players that seem gettable we are not even trying for, this would be a good cheap deal and he is young and clearly has talent, if rumours are true we were prepared to pay 30m for him last summer!

I'd say it's still possible. We might not be looking at him right now, but after the U21 Euro ends and some papers get shifted around, I don't see why the door can't open.

A good tournament is all that is needed to re open closed doors.

Victor Nilsson Lindelöf went from relative unknown on the world football stage to Man United players based in large on his performances in the 2015 U21 Euro and in the 2016 Euro.

Or a less shining example, look at Moussa Sissoko

I think there are too many upsides to this kid to ignore. Expect more talk once he i finished International duty.

so JJ basically said no to every target we have linked with and we are not signing anyone...

Watched the U21's last night and he looked like a perfect understudy for Eriksen. Therein lies the problem. For his price and wages do we need an understudy?

Edit - we may already have one in Edwards or others can play that role.

I don't think the price being thrown around is unrealistic for a player of his age and obvious ability. I also cant imagine his wages being too high either. We were hot for him last year, so why would that have changed? Lets see what happens after the U21's have finished.

I agree re. fee - looks realistic and even good value. But on here elsewhere wages of £100k per have been suggested which would put him on a parity with our top earners. I understand also he and his agent probably realise he is good value fee wise and will push for as much as they can get. Don't get me wrong, he looks a good prospect, but he is just that. Personally I think there are some better risk gambles to take, but then again I'm not in charge of transfers or money and don't have a clue.

I agree $100k is way to high. Having said that I would also take that with a pinch of salt. I do feel if the money overall is right, and the kid is given a chance like Lamela and Son were then i think it could prove a very astute signing. Time will tell i guess.

Must admit, he impressed me last night, as did the right back Toljan, who we've also been linked with.

Meyer got on the ball a lot and really did look a lot like Eriksen in how he played. If Barkley ends up being too pricey then Meyer could well be a good alternative.

IMHO, Winks would be able to understudy Eriksen as well as play CM. I don't see any reason to go for Meyer unless it's a complete financial no brainer.

I can't see Winks being able to replicate what Eriksen does in advanced positions. I'm Winks biggest fan but he is a central midfielder. We need able back up to Eriksen which requires an attacking minded midfielder willing to play from wide positions. Haven't seen much of Meyer either so I don't know whether he fits the bill for me or not.

Poch has been very adept at transforming players. Alli, Dier, Rose etc. have all added significantly to their existing skill set under his guidance. Winks, IMO, has a very high skill set to start with and is more attack minded than our other CMs. I think he'd do pretty well at 10.
