Some interesting tweets from Michael Owen this evening.

https://twitter.com/themichaelowen

Reading between the lines i sounds to me that he's not getting any offers from big clubs, and by his own admission doesn't have the appetite for playing at a lower level.

Shame. I expected him to be a superstar but since leaving Liverpool his career has gone downhill and, although he's pocketed a few medals as a bench-warmer at United, he's ultimately come nowhere near to reaching his potential.

He's no doubt been unlucky with injuries, but when you see comments from him like this, together with how he's snapped at Newcastle fans in the past, you have to question whether his own ego and lack of appetite for the game has done as much/more to spoil his career than the injuries he's suffered.

Unlucky or not he made the choice to bench warm rather then get out there and play football. If he had joined a villa or everton and been banging them in he could have got a call up for England and could have been Englands record goalscorer. The worst thing is looking at those tweets he doesn't seem to regret that decision.

Thats exactly my point. I recall him reacting badly to some Newcastle fans who gave him stick for hardly playing while he was at Toon (due to injury) and then leaving on a free with some fairly self-damning comments about how he would rather warm the bench at a club winning things than play every week for a mid-table outfit.

A complete waste. He is more interested in his horses now than he is in playing football.

Its almost as if some of those tweets are for himself, kind of therapy "I know I can still bang them in at the top level. I proved that nearly every time I played for Man Utd. At 32, still got a few years in me."

They should almost start with:

'Dear Diary, another week has passed without an offer from a Champions League club...'

Never really rated Owen, thought he was an average player who was fast, now he's not fast we are seeing that he has very little to offer.

Just wait till the arabian or chinese clubs start throwing money after him. I bet he'd enjoy championship football more than playing in Gulf Oil League or whatever it's called, but I'm sure as is true with most footballers it's the paycheck that matters.

Owen was top class when he was younger. He should never had gone Madrid, that was a big mistake, didnt get a fair crack of the whip there and never really recovered. Should have stayed at Liverpool. I'm sure he can't mind too much the amount he has earned out of it. Will always remember his goals v Germany with a big smile on my face.

Michael Owen reveals on Twitter he is still searching for new club

Michael Owen says he is still waiting for a "good opportunity" ahead of the new season, but has again said he will not drop down to the Championship.
Ex-England striker Owen, 32, insisted in May he would not retire despite being released by Manchester United after three seasons at Old Trafford.
"If a good opportunity doesn't come my way then so be it," tweeted Owen.
"I know I can still bang them in at the top level. I proved that nearly every time I played for Manchester United."
Owen moved to Old Trafford on a free transfer in 2009, and he scored nine goals in his first season - including the winner in his side's 4-3 victory in the Manchester derby.
His appearances became less frequent in his second year at the club, when he scored five goals in all competitions, before he netted three times in four outings last term.
He made just one Premier League appearance, however, and his last outing was in the Champions League at the beginning of November.
But Owen believes he still has something to offer in the top-flight - and he said he would not consider dropping down a division to join a Championship club.
"At 32, I've still got a few years in me," he said.
"At this stage of my career it has to be something that I'm going to enjoy doing.
"Not being disrespectful when I say I wouldn't play in the Championship. Always said I wouldn't drop down the leagues like some have done.
"After playing for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle, Man Utd and England, I don't think I would enjoy that football."

Michael Owen's career stats

Liverpool (1996-2004): 297 games, 158 goals
Real Madrid (2004-05): 40 games, 14 goals
Newcastle (2005-09): 79 games, 30 goals
Man Utd (2009-12): 52 games, 17 goals
England (1998-2008): 89 caps, 40 goals

If Harry was still in charge part of me would honestly think this could be very much possible, with AVB, no chance imo.

And to answer the question, no.

Its all very well a player being free but if hes going to be on high wages, always injured and take up a place in the 25 man squad i dont see the point. To me it seems like a player West Ham would sign.

The real expense of players is their wages. We appear to be paying bigger wages at the moment but the player has to be worth it.

According to Wikipedia Owen scored 5 in 31 for Utd. This was with consistent injuries. He hasn't played since November. At Utd they didn't have to rely on him and could rest him whenever he needed it but he still didn't deliver.

Even if he asked for £5k a week I'd still say no as it would be a complete waste of a space in our 25 man squad.

If Arry was here he'd be a Spurs player by now.Im not Slating Redknapp and thought he did a good job, but we seem to be trying to usher in a new era, and signings like this wouldnt fit in with our new policy it seems

His stats really aren't that good for an out and out striker, at any of his previous clubs. Not a bad player but overrated since that wonder goal at the world cup. And not the future, not going our way. No thanks.
