why not VDV to replace modric in a three man midfield which could in effect be a 4 2 3 1 formation

lloris
walker kaboul vertoghen benni

sigurdssson/sando/parker

lennon vdv bale

adebayor

maybe if parker was fit , but I would have Sigursson further up and instead of Lennon

we'll play 4-3-3 more though

Well the first thing is to not consider it a downgrade if Moutinho enters the team for Modric. Moutinho form the little I've seen of him is a representative of the complete central midfielder. He can tackle, mark, pass , & retain the ball. Modric is a withdrawn play-maker that primarily plays the initial pass that leads to assists and goals. He's a lot like Xabi Alonso only less defensively sound wherein he can score a fantastic goal when given the chance. Its a toss up between the two but I do think that neither is a downside of the other.

well it's a downgrade but the best we could hope for, he will make the centre a little more solid though without losing too much rhythm so could in turn give our other attacking players a little more freedom.

This.
If we are lucky, what we lose through selling Modric we will gain by having a better balance - probably helped if, as expected, AVB plays a three man midfield.

It's not about having or getting the best players, it's about getting the best team. The 2 don't go hand in hand.

Moutinho has the height, weight and reach and although Modric had light feet, I just don't think he'd get near him to land anything meaningful without taking a few to the face first. Far too one-sided for me, Moutinho by knock-out inside the first 3 rounds, claret fucking everywhere, this one will fall way short of the distance and we could need an ambulance for the little man.

It's a shame that Luka can't recognise the exciting times ahead for the team and give it another year. But I guess he has given us 4 good years, more than most class players give us.

I think it's a great replacement. Don't forget the other awesome midfielders we already have... Livermoore, vdv, huddlestone!

modric is a better player, moutinho is a better fit.

avb plays 3 midfielder, 2 having a specific role, 1 being more flexible. the two specific ones are amc and dm, exactly the reason why we have vdv, sigurd, sandro, parker for it. what we lack is the double pivot that can put in an attacking gear and defense. parker could do pretty well when we field a more defensive box to box, eg sandro, parker, vdv. but if we need a more attacking one, it would be sandro, moutinho, vdv.

imo, modric would not flourish in this system because he is more of a playmaker cm in the middle of the 4 4 2, rather than a box to box. modric would be better partnered with someone like gattuso, and letting him dictate the attacks.

with modric in the line up, we have to compensate the attacking power of vdv and sigurdsson by giving modric the ball. moutinho on the other hand allows use to fully utilise the dmc prowess and amc attacking ability.

The main difference is the ability on the ball and decision making in the final third. Modric can take on players and do something intelligent with it in the final third; beating someone near/in the box, drawing fouls etc. Moutinho doesn't have that; he could do the link-up type move just as well but we will be less effective in the final third. I don't think the combo of Sigursson + Moutinho would replace this.

I think VdV is primiarly a great passer/shooter of the ball. He isn't a dribbler. He needs to be given the ball at the right place right time. Our other 2 options of Lennon/Bale have lots of pace but lack the intelligence to consistently do something with the ball. Sigursson is more VdV than Modric. Moutinho is more play-dictation than creator. So I think Modric will be missed alot.

It's a downgrade anyhow Portugise teams inflate the fees for their players moutiho no doubt won't be sold for less the 30M. If we're not getting 40M plus for Modric it's not worth it , just refuse all others and let modric see out his contract IMO would be better value for money. Modric once his playing hopefully winning will just get on with it.

I wonder if AVB has seen much of Benat at Betis. He would cost half of what Moutinho would cost.

Yeah, yeah, we thought that the sky would fall in when Carrick went and then Berbatov. I was quite prepared to rip George Graham's balls off with my bare hands when he sold David Ginola to Villa but every time we've gone from strength th strength. Audere est Facere

It will always be a downgrade or Madrid would be trying to sign Moutinho and not Modric.

I still laugh at the suggestion Dembele is anywhere near the standard we require.

Why laugh at Dembele, would you be laughing if Dembele signed for united or chelsea as linked?

Did you watch Dembele playing in CM for Fulham:rolleyes:

Yes we were a vastly better side with Zokora instead of Carrick, nor could anyone possibly doubt that Pavyluchenko pissed all over Berbatov. And when Ginola left we demonstrated that we could still attract the star names by bringing in the legend that is Sergei Rebrov.

Spurs history has been one of unstoppable forward momentum.

I am sure AVB is aware of every young talented player in La Liga. With Moutinho, I think it is more than his qualities on the pitch, I think he wants a lieutenant on the pitch, someone whose qualities as a person he knows as well. It's probably a very wise move, even if we have to pay slightly above the odds.
