And just food for thought since we're on the topic, Schneiderlin averaged a ridiculous 37 forward passes a game last season. That's 12 more a game than any of our central mids, and roughly 1.5 times as many as that most forward-passing mid (Paulinho).
When you look at the stats as a % of passes that went forward the stats are very interesting, especially for our DM's. I don't think it is the amount of passes forward but more how quick they make those passes that sets them apart.

CM's
Sandro - 70%
Capoue - 64%
Paulinho - 60%
Dembele - 56%
Bentaleb - 58%

Schneiderlin - 64%
Cork - 66%
Wanyama - 60%

AMC's
Eriksen - 56%
Holtby - 57%
Chadli - 54%
Lamela - 50%
Lennon - 49%
Townsend - 57%

Davis - 57%
Lallana - 49%
Warde -Prowse 56%
Rodriquez - 51%

Completely agree. A "forward pass" could equate to absolutely fuck all if the space to develop an attack is no longer available due to slow transition play.

Said it before, will say it again. Very good player. Not at all what we need though.

Yes, or to a player a yard ahead but 2 yards to the side, gaining no advantage what so ever, just giving someone else the ball in the same position. It really pissed me off how often we do that in a game.

I had a tiny heart attack every time our center mids passed the ball backwards, horizontally, or to a nearby ineffective position every time this past season. Needless to say, my heart is now almost entirely scar tissue.

I'm curious then mate, what do you think we need?

A LB, a CB and a LW , and then a creative mid if we have spare money. This guy is decent is a lot of aspects, but he excels in none. If we are going to sing another CM we need someone similar to Modric. Somene like Cabaye, like Herrera, like Banega. schneiderin is not that player

Yep, last thing we need is another squad player at this point, especially another midfielder.

He's not a mobile CDM because he couldn't keep with that attacking line of pace and creativity after just having returned from a lengthy injury and playing in his less favorite as a CB behind a midfield that couldn't contain 'pool's to save their lives?

Injury or no injury , he is not mobile IMO. But doesn't make him a lesser player. I just don't see him in a Poch system

Apart from Sneiderlin , another player who impressed me is Hector Herrera, FC Porto and Mexican CM. Box to box , bundle of energy, plays fwd. Not sure if we can get him from Porto for less than 15m

I actually completely agree with this, especially your positions of priority. Hell, look at my sig, I'm all about me bringing in a DLP. I should also have made it clear by now from my posts even in this thread that I don't want Schneiderlin to come in as a new alternative, but as a superb option if Sandro were to go. Otherwise, aside from the CDM's, and even after Livermore has been sold, I think we still have another CM to move on (Paulinho or Dembele).

I certainly don't mean to criticize, but I'm just very surprised to see someone of such an opinion. From what I've even seen of him at Spurs in his brief appearances, and from his tapes and scouting reports he is renowned for his mobility from a holding mid position. Again, I think you'd enjoy some of those tapes from his time at Toulouse.

Makes sense as more defensive players have more players in front of them to pass to.

Interesting stat - 100% of Hugo's passes are forward.

Spot on. The comparison was more to do with out mid's Vs Southampton's, as some posters appear to think that Southampton's players pass forward more than ours, but it isn't the case, it's more how they pass forward (quickly to a player in space as appose to 1 yard in front to a player in the same position after they held onto the ball for 5 secs).

As far as percentage of passes forward, you're right they pass it forward no more than our deep mids. However, in terms of sheer numbers due to their leading the league in possession, they do pass it forward a much larger quantity of times and at farther average distances. Also, I wish there was a source of stats (maybe you know of one) that further split pass types into quadrants (forwards, backwards, two horizontals) instead of just semicircles (forwards and backwards). I think that would tell the real picture of difference between Saints' vertical play under Poch and how slow and horizontal our midfield play was.
