I remember going up to Goodison for an FA Cup game with John Lacy and Paul Price as our centre halves, does that count ? Oh wait you meant good memories. Well my highlight has to be Ossie's testimonial at the Lane, seeing Maradona in a Spurs shirt in the same team as Hoddle and Waddle, I've still not witnessed anything better as a Spurs fan.

For you youngsters just think of Messi playing for Spurs with Bale and Modric but in a few years when they are both several levels better than they are today. Better still buy the video (not DVD) from the club and see it for yourself.
I remember maradona at the end of the game pointing to hoddle and clapping that was a very special night

Remember the old steward with the limp? Every time he walked around the pitch edge he'd do it to the Laurel & Hardy tune and always with a smile on his face.

Ballot cards dished up for semi and final ticket draws. Got my '81 Cup Final ticket on a ballot draw.

Some great memories going back to '75, but some real bad ones too. Nearly got crushed when around 500 goons got into the Paxton end, typical cowards picking the boys enclosure as the stand to 'take.' They didn't reckon on virtually the entire Shelf being in there though as they'd got wind of it. What a tear up that was!
Getting 'legged' by a bunch of nasty Manc monkeys who saw two 12 year old as easy pickings. I'd have left Usain Bolt for dead that night!
Exciting times back then.

When was this?? I remember being in the Paxton in the very early 80's as a small kid and being crushed up against the barrier and being lifted over when some Goons charged the crowd.

I remember Stanley Matthews, in his 50s, sprinting along the touchline at the Lane, almost close enough for me to reach out and touch him where I stood on the centre line every game.

The ball looked as though it was glued to his boots and he left Ron Henry wrong-footed and off-balance. All Ron could do was shake his head, shrug his shoulders and applaud the incredible Wizard of the Wing.

Different kind of dribbling entirely to the sort you were thinking of Dougal.

At the Jimmy Greaves testimonial in 1972 there was a FORD ESCORT prize up for grabs to a lucky programme holder who's number came up. It wasn't me. It was parked just off
the pitch down at the Park Lane End IIRC. Nearly 46,000 there to honour the great man
who was swapped for Martin Peters and some dosh in 1970. About two weeks later I was at Old Trafford watching Martin Peters score all four goals (actually only saw three btw) in a lovely 1-4 victory.

The fantstic thing about Stanley Mathews as I remember was that he only had one move but it worked every time.
Little faint inside and then a sort of stepover drag on the outside. The full back knew exactly what he was going to do but not precisely when.
Probably false memory syndrome.

They might go on general sale but you can't rock up on match day and get in to see a game.

If you rock early enough and have an internet-enabled phone you can.

I bought a ticket about 3.5 hours before a match once. I think 3 hours is the cut off.

Standing almost everywhere in the ground, being able to turn up to a game on a whim and get in, the old alphabet style Half Time placards that let you know the scores elsewhere, peanuts! peanuts! as the vendors walked around the edge of the pitch, skillfully and accurately lobbing small packets of Percy Daltons at whoever bought some.

The crowd 'bobbing' on the shelf to Knees up Mother Brown
and everyone trying to give the poor sod next to them a dead leg, avoiding being squeezed against the barriers when we scored, not having some tosser who was too lazy to go the the bog piss up your leg, the bogs being 3 inches deep in piss, a traditional cup of bovril at away games up north.

Ticker tape welcomes when we signed Ossie and Ricky, singing Burkinshaw's Blue & White army or Born is the King of White Hart Lane. Match of the Day on a saturday night, the Big Match on a Sunday.

Chris Jones being 'oooh unlucky Chris', Ralph Coates and his combover hair, Peter Taylor on the wing, going down, coming up again and the choice of food was basically fish and chips or a hot dog from some dodgy guy pushing a trolley.

I miss the good old days

Me too - BTW A & C you've had a senior moment as Bovril was on sale at Spurs and was a half-time necessity

I usually stood behind the goal at the Paxton and clearly remember the surge when we scored or nearly did - those crush barriers were fecking hard

Singing "Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner" with emphasis on "Get off me barrow!" at the end :)

And I remember that there were usually fights either side of me when we played Man U and B'ham and I got really pissed off because I was trying to concentrate on the game

And seeing George Best speeding down the wing but Cyril Knowles kept backing away and George didn't know what to do because he was used to leaving defenders in his wake and with no one to beat, he was stymied

I remember 52,000 turning up at the Lane to watch Liverpool get beaten 2-0 and the turnstile door slamming just after I got in

And being one of the 10,000 locked out in 1971 when the Goons beat us and won the League

Happy days

BTW I love hearing about how it was in the 50s, 60s and 70s. I only went from about 93 onwards so feels likre I missed out on a fantastic, different world.

Talking about Hoddle (which we weren't) does anyone remember the night he passed Feynoord (I think) to death and they had Johan Cruyff and a young Ruud Gullit in their team? I think we were about 4-0 up at half time.

I was at the away game of that tie too. It was very "lively", one of our lot (Grizzly is the name that sticks in my head) got stabbed with a sword.

We won the game 2-0 I seem to remember.

I remember that line being "get off yer sister".
Peanuts in the ground but outside the ground there were some monkey nut sellers. We'd buy huge bags of these dehydrating nuts at 1pm and be first into the Lane. Sit/stand just in front of a barrier high up on the shelf to reserve the best place.
For a few year (79-83) there might well be any number of fights kicking off around you in the Shelf, more so in the Park Lane. The bill would drag people out indescriminently, chuck them out of the ground and perhaps give them a beating.
'Knees up Mother Brown'. This song or 'bop' would always end in a crush at the bottom of the Shelf. Once you heard 'e i e i e i o' you'd steady your feet and prepare for the worst.
Smoke whatever and whenever you liked.
In a match against a team who'd bring down a firm (most teams) in the days before big brother (cctv etc), when you came out of the ground, particularly on an evening kickoff you wouldn't want to stray off the main roads. I had to prove my spursness on at least 2 occassions to stop me getting a kickin in the side streets around the back of the Paxton.
I remember coming out of a local derby against the scum and literally the whole High Road were engaged a mass brawl. Scary stuff indeed.
There used to be a Greasy Joe's on the High Road just opposite the ground where you'd see some players very occassionally and could grab an autograph if that was your thing. I remember being surprised how 'wide' Gary Brooke was in real life,

I don't suppose there's anything funny about this at all, but it made me laugh...

That was the best plan, get in nice and early and find a spot in front of a barrier. I fondly remember the shelf bouncing, but it would terrify me nowadays.

I remember looking out for the TV vans outside the ground, to see if were on MOTD or The Big Match that weekend.
I remember you could walk all the way round from the shelf to the west stand in the standing area's when the stewards kept the gates open, and when you got to the enclosure it was full of 'nutters'.lol.

I thought we won promotion with a 0-0 draw at Southampton. ?

Correct...and southamton hit the post in the last minute..:eek:mg:

Yep that was a top day....took over the town and a mass pitch invasion at the end. Some of the best times i ever had going to away games was in the 2nd Div...Those mammoth games with Bolton, Bristol Rovers, Cardiff city (scary) Millwall (mental)..

Same here, queued up 5 hours with my old man..he was never any good at jibbing in..

Unfortunately I was one of the many that got in. Straight from school via Hackney Downs BR to WHL - Much queueing but what a bummer when that late goal went in. The nightmares of late Arsenal goals began that day along with a hatred of teams in red.
