- In terms of player recruitment, THFC confirmed there was a group involved in recruitment from the age of 8 up to Senior players. They were ‘talent spotters’
- All would consider ‘do we need cover in that position? How good is the player?’ etc. and the ultimate decision would be made by the person responsible for that age group

I'm guessing this means Poch at senior level and other coaches at younger levels.

All copied/originating from a single Daily Fail article

Most tabloid journalists are 4-4-2 pie 'n' chips men. They hate DoFs and seek to undermine them at every opportunity

Baldini is a director and has a directorate, which includes the scouting department and all its staff

These are articles from November.

The first thing to say about Paul Mitchell is he is not joining Tottenham Hotspur to work for Franco Baldini.

Plus Rob MacKenzie joined as Head of Player Identification at Tottenham Hotspur in early Feb.

Player Identification?

I could do that!

"Mr Levy...you see over on that pitch over there? Well I have identified those moving objects as 22 players."

"Gadzooks you're right! But what about the one in black?"

"No Mr Levy. I have identified him as a referee."

"Good work MacKenzie. Good work indeed."

What about cases where ID is ambiguous? I mean, sometimes cases like Theo Walnut or Joey Bartone impose themselves upon the host match - almost identical in every way to the moving objects who are footballers. Only a trained pathologist can spot them. Do we have any of those on the staff?

Player identification isn't as easy as it sounds. Apparently Andre Marriner was a failed scout who then went into reffing.

I see that worked out well for him.

I'm wondering if these are new jobs or if they are replacing someone. I would like to know who and how many are fired.
I mean if these guys are 50k per head we just added 200k to our wage bill.

Indeed.

But that is per annum.

An in the context of players earning £100K per week, it's not a figure of any great significance.

I've thought about that but it doesn't make sense. Just because we have big earners and an already big wage bill doesn't mean we can inflate it more.

Having said that if it does lead to meaningful positive change or is an experiment for a new direction that I am cool with it. Although that should mean someone gets the sack, which is what I am curious about.

If these four analysts will indeed earn £50K each per annum, on average, then their combined salaries will amount to less than 0.2% of our total wage bill (which is now in excess of £100m p.a.). So even if, in the fullness of time, they prove not to be value for money, it will have been no great loss to the club.

If, however, their expert analysis leads to the club identifying and buying far better players for the first team (and below) and improving the performance of players already at the club, then the potential upside is huge - both in terms of greater success on the pitch (and the greater revenues that that will earn) and in terms of having a far more valuable squad.

Our youth recruitment is meant to be one of the best around. Not sure we should be playing around with it.

I would think Tim was on more than 200k as development manager?
Freeing up that money and making room for at least 4 egos?

An interesting line about Webb in this Lewis article:

.....

The place is a happy ship. Levy’s indulgence of Pochettino and his trust in the Argentine is evidence that he trusts him and is happy to give him anything he wants to turn the club into a force again.
So Paul Mitchell has come in from Southampton to work with Pochettino on transfers. David Webb, Head of Recruitment at Championship promotion-chasers Bournemouth, is also set to arrive at White Hart Lane shortly.
(As an aside, there are not too many tears being shed over Webb’s departure from Dean Court. The word is that he was out of contract in the summer and was unlikely to have his deal renewed.)
It is all evidence, however, that Levy is far happier with Pochettino’s work with the first team than he ever was with Sherwood.

Head of European Player Recruitment
Webb joined the club in the summer of 2013 and oversees the development of first team player recruitment in Europe, implementing new technical systems and exploiting modern market trends to identify and recruit players for the club.
He also brings European scouting experience, having worked on a consultant basis for a top Bundesliga club as a performance scout, holds a Uefa A coaching license and is currently undertaking an MSc in Sports Psychology.
Webb successfully spotted and signed 11-year-old Wilfried Zaha while scouting for Crystal Palace, and has also worked for Millwall, Spurs and Southampton.

His cv seems to show :

Thurrock and Basildon College – football/fitness coach – Aug 2002 to July 2005
Crystal Palace – Academy coach scout – Aug 2003 to Aug 2005
Tottenham Hotspur – Academy coach scout – Sept 2005 to Aug 2007
Millwall – Youth coordinator – Sept 2007 to Dec 2010
Southampton Football Club – scout – Dec 2010 to June 2013
Bournemouth - 2013 to date

Looks like he's going to go back to a more senior role than he had at Spurs 6 years ago, and overlapped with Mitchell at Southampton. At least he knows how Spurs academy works - but I hope that he has a strong reporting role into John McDemott (Academy Director) who has built up the academy over the last decade even if reporting to Mitchell - no point in making dramatic changes to a successful production line of young players but happy if it can be
refined under McDermott's management

Like many it looks like he's forever to going to be known as 'the man who discovered X' - in this case Zaha

Edit - more detail on his previous Spurs role :

Academy Coach Scout
Tottenham Hotspur PLC
September 2005 – 2007 (2 years)
• Responsible for Academy Teams; U9-10’s, for season 2005/2007
• Assisting coaching with U16s Age group.
• Compiling a database that is strategically analysed to prioritise players for the club.
• Accountable for South East and local scouting markets
• Development Centre Coordinator South East.
