A few I gues that I took a liking to for some reason:

Justin Edinburgh
Steffen Freund
Allan Nielson
Mauricio Tarrico

Loved them all for some odd reason and would defend them to the hilt.

Edinburgh!!! I was under the impression that not even his own mum loved that sack of shit? The a dead tie with Dean Austin in the worst fullback I have ever seen.

That's cracked me up re:Edinburgh.

I expected a few eyebrows/differences of opinion to be raised here and there.

My beef with Dean Austin stems only from the fact that in the mid-nineties at a festival I had to stay awake with a friend who we didn't realise at the time had drifted into some really bad territory with his drinking (I'll leave it at that). Being the one left holding the baby, as it were, I was very bitter at having to stay awake and safeguard him whilst he spent all night on the last night, and way into the morning when the place was clearing into a bombsite, kicking people's tents with a stereo in his hand playing Black Flag's cover of 'Louie Louie' at full blast, and telling people to "Fucking wake up! You need to wake up and appreciate Dean Austin's sweet left-foot! It's sweet like a pie."

I can still hear him saying it.

Hours of that, and steering him while everyone I knew got a fine night's sleep effectively ruined any chance Dean Austin ever had at gaining my appreciation.

Blondel! Wasn't he one who was going to be incredible?! as well. etc. He got homesick though, didn't he? That old chestnut.

The Gus incident in the goalmouth must be on YouTube. He was trying to sub himself back on or something when he'd been subbed off, and looking at people completely confused. He had no idea what was going on afterwards.

Edit: It's definitely not there. Shame.

Loved Freund, so wanted him to score.

Pat van den Hauwe was great. I remember him going for a 50/50 ball with Stuart Pearce, and I swear the whole crowd held their breath! Both Psycho of course.

Pedro Mendes is a legend. A friend who is a Rangers fan thinks he's the best think since sliced bread!

Espen Baardsen.

I always thought he played a much bigger role for us for some reason, did the Wikipedia lookup on him, and found he made 23 appearances for us, quit the game at 25 after one appearance for Everton after having lost interest in the game. He's only 30 now.

Have a quick look down the list in here:

Since we're covering the same era, roughly-ish, still no shouts for Willem Korsten, then?

Simon Davies came across as a really nice guy. I used to enjoy Diggers diary, it was good a player took time to write on the website.

Paul Walsh, the first times I went to White Hart Lane he always stood out as being very talented and hard working, shame most of his best work was at other clubs.

Steffen Freund showed a work ethic and attitude very rare nowadays.

Erik Thorsvedt, as a kid hearing we had a viking in goal was really cool

Good calls there!
Diggers Diary, I had forgotten about that! Yes, Simon Davies was pretty good.

Anyone remember (before the backpass rule changed) someone passing the ball back to Erik and he hadn't noticed? The ball rolled towards the goal, and it seemed the whole crowd as one shouted "Erik" and he stopped it before it went in.

No, I don't. I'd love to see that, though. Classic. I liked Erik, and I think he came close to being my favourite player at one time or another. He seemed likeable in a mild-mannered way.

Sorry mate but that's just madness. If we're talking useless fullbacks, there can only be one.

May I present:

Paulo Tramezzani Eek

Now, on to my votes:

Paul Walsh (always thought he looked mega-cool on the pitch)
Erik the Viking
Jose Dominguez (amazed none of you guys have listed him, he was absolute class but was horribly lightweight for the times. I actually think he'd be a star in this era, in which defenders aren't allowed to tackle!)

I think Dominguez was one of the first in the thread, but nobody else went for him.

Paul Walsh, I liked a lot. I'm sure I thought he was South East London's answer to Claudio Caniggia at the time.

Jose Dominguez (he plays on the winguez) was tiny. Once at a dinner and dance, when he came into the room, all the women went "Aaawwww" as he was so sweet and small!

YeahTramezzani was bad but he he only played a handful of games. Edinburgh almost got a frickin testamonial....very wrong. I don't know if there is any resource online to find out how many penalties a player gave away in their career, but I would be surprised if it wasn't in the hundreds

Oh no... I mean players that you can't really explain or else when you do, it's just very particular to yourself.

Martin's definitely there when it comes to warmth, though. He's up there near the top. I don't know if he's a legend, but he's definitely a way above the level of almost inexplicable liking for players that I'm talking about here.

I think you'd have to be a very dark soul to outright dislike the man.
