Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but did any of you see Sport magazine this morning? It did a big analysis feature on the finances of football. And the stand-out figure was that the Carling Cup winners only get £100,000. And the winners of the UEFA get £1.8m (you get £1m for winning the FA Cup).

In context, Real Madrid got £15m from the Champions League for being knocked out in the first knockout round. Really is astonishing when you see it in black and white.

Thats why Arsenal depend on the cash from the CL, to service their loans for the Degenerates Stadium.

It is low but it's much more about the TV and matchday revenues from progressing in the UEFA cup that the CC gets you if you win it.

Pretty smart of Carling to be tight really. The real value to teams from entering is the potential UEFA cup entry that the FA(?) has bequeathed on this competition.

Obviously it's great to win, not saying it's not, just shows how out of hand many of the other competitions have got. Was a really interesting feature.

i guess we would have got quite a bit of money from gate receipts and tv money. main thing is that it's given us the stepping stone to yet another season in europe.

Absolutely. But again, that isn't really what I'm saying. Champions League teams will get even more gate receipts and TV money. It was a comparative point, not a 'oh, winning the Carling Cup hasn't done us any good' post. It's just showing the real difference that West Ham game made…

yep the prize money is poor - next time the sponsorship is up for grabs if the Cup produces more matches of the calibre of our epics v City AFC & CFC then the next sponsors will probably have to pay more to get the rights

our total money for the day I guess will easily exceed £1m - I reckon the live & highlight TV & other media rights globally will gain us £400k plus - gate receipts £700k plus - merchandising £50k+ - these are guesses by the way - just based on what I know in general

Hi GP :) you're right of course in your general points - but actually there are very few if any CL matches where the gate receipts would match a Wembley final such as sunday's

These points were made last year when Sevilla won the UEFA Cup but made less than Arsenal who were knocked out early in the CL cup.

THere is the farcical system of historic appearences making successful teams get more money than recent teams thus ensuring that the clubs who get in often get bigger slices of the pie which of course makes it easier for them to get in again. This is a virtuous cycle if you are one of the "big" clubs and a vicious cycle if you continually miss out

Yeah, it's kinda poor but more importantly we get entered straight back in the wafa cup next season!! I do think it could have been a struggle to get back in through the league though not out of the question. It's just nice that the league is still very important but if we dont end up higher up then it's not going to shape next season as it could have done.

With our share of the gate money, TV money and merchandising (you had the cup final and now you have the cup winners merchandise) I'd imagine we'd get something close to a million for our work.

It's more about a nice glory filled day out at Wembley!

winning domestic trophies is never about the money, it's about the glory only.

That's why CL qualification really is that important.

one of the main reasons quite a few clubs dont play first team lineups all the time

the smaller clubs would surely try harder if there was bigger money for winning. as there isnt they play weakened sides to instead try and secure the premiership status for another season
