Is anyone else worried about our defence and it's frailties. If we do not bring in any defenders forget about any chance of champions league.

If you're refering to last nights friendly, then no i'm not. That was our reserve back 4. There was no Hugo, Walker, Verts or Vlad. Davies will be coming in too. Lovren would be the icing on the cake. Other than that it's pretty solid with the likes of Kaboul, Fryers and Rose as back up.

I'm not worried the defenders individually as such.

We've changed our system the last few seasons which puts a lot of pressure on the defenders.

Bale was given a free role and for a long time BAE had to hold the left side defensively on his own and to be fair to him he did a pretty good job.

Rose was excellent for Sunderland under O'Neill with a setup that protected the defenders. He was left more isolated last season and he couldn't do the job to the level BAE did. A lot to ask for from a young defender.

We have to start respecting that we have good players. Threads stating Rose, Walker, Dawson etc are shit are just nonsense. We need a manager who puts a team together that works better.

I don't see a need to buy a lot of defenders.

Forget about CL, just try and enjoy our progress/development and attractive football over the season.

Focus on that and anything else is a bonus.

Yeah Poch is
Which is why it'll get sorted.

I can't see it being sorted properly until the end of next summer though, GF, what are your thoughts?

Also, I'd imagine Daws is going to be told he can sit and watch us play or go and play somewhere else.

*that's a 'personal opinion' question btw, not a probe for itk.

As I reported in earlier posts in the RO, Poch knows the system he wants to play and the type of players he wants, some of our targets like H Moreno don't look likely now, but if I was a betting man I would say he will bring in at least one more CB who can play at LB as well and Dawson, Rose and probably Naughton will go by the end of the window. Much of it will depend on individuals wanting to come here rather than elsewhere, but I expect some more activity on top of Davies and Siggy by the end of our tour.

Hopefully we tie up a deal for Yedlin while we're over there, very impressed with him again last night.

I just hope that levy gives him the tools he needs to succeed.

Exactly what I thought. Not surprised by the 'at least one more' irt CBs after seeing kaboul last night. He's not really been the same since his injury.

I think it's super exciting to have a past international defender as a manager who has a fierce attacking philosophy.

Means all of our past problems will be tackled and, hopefully, fully resolved.

I'm worried in that Dawson isn't up to it generally, good player for a defensive last ditch system but struggles with a possession pressing system (much like Terry in many ways). In addition to that we have Kabouls injury record leaving only two solid starters in Vertonghen and Chirches both of which lack physical and aerial abilities. I would bring this back to the Caulker sale again, we shouldn't have let him go.

Aside from Jan Vertonghen, all of our centre backs are much of a muchness these days...

Not too worried, no. I think Chiriches and Vertonghen will be our first choice CBs in time. Dawson, Kaboul and Fryers remain decent backups. If Kaboul and/or Dawson were to go, I'd like to see us bring in a good CB, but they're notoriously difficult to get.

He wanted games and they gave us about 9m. It was a no brainer.

He actually needed games, because the season before he was very raw.

i might be in the minority but it was a pleasant surprise or me to see Fredriks come on, beat his man and cross to a striker (think Falque headed it). Not sure about his defensive abilities mind you but got my attention.

I agree that our defence is actually the worst part of our team at the moment, however, in signing a premiership experienced and solid left back in Davies then we have improved already. I think with us being linked with Moreno & Lovren, and also Greyfox ITK, it shows that Poch is well aware of what is required.

Also, at Southampton, he improved their defence massively and they were arguably the most impressive defensive unit in the league last year. If Poch can sign the players he feels will make the difference then I truly believe that we will be a solid team who play fluid football. Im looking forward to seeing what he can do.

I really do think we need to bring in an experienced leader of a centre half. I don't think we've got a defender that controls the back line. Can't think of many that fit the bill though.

Still pretty gutted we didn't go for Garay.
